Act East and India's North-East/ edited by C. Joshua Thomas and

Konthoujam Sarda--New Delhi: Pantagon Press, 2017

    49253

This book is an outcome of the deliberations of the session on

"Act East and India's North-East: How to Reap the Dividend" on

the inauguration of the ASEAN Studies Centre, Shillong on 8th

August 2016. This volume captures the essence of Indias

transition for looking East to acting East in the context of the

(NER) and the opportunities and the limitations that it brings

with it. A paradigm shift in policy making in consultation with

the people of NER and not through the prism of security

concerns could make the North-East to be the gateway to South-

East Asia'. It gives an overview of Indias Act East policy from

economic and strategic perspective and enumerates on issues

and areas whereby the North-Eastern states can effectively

contribute to Indias Act East policy.

Role stress and job satisfaction among working women/ Santosh

    Arora--Mumbai: Himalaya Publishing House, 2017

This book looks into the organizational role stress and job

satisfaction among women teachers, doctors and clerks of bank

and LIC. The sample of the study constituted of 300 women in

the age group of 18-60 years. The author feels that these are the

professions in which much of the stress comes from nature and

quantity of work and lack of recognition. To study job satisfaction

its influencing factors becomes essential because if one knows the

factors influencing job satisfaction then only remedial procedures

can be undertaken to improve satisfaction towards job and reduce

    stress related to it.

Beyond anthropology to post-anthropology: towards a new theory

of centrality and peripherality in the post-human future/ Peter

Baofu--New Delhi: Overseas Press (India), 2 Vols. 2017

This document offers to understand the future of anthropology

(and related fields) in regard to the dialectic relationship between

centrality and peripherality (and those in order dichotomies)

while learning from different approaches in the literature without

favoring any one of them. It offers a theory of post-anthropology

to go beyond the existing approaches in a novel way and is

    organized in four chapters.

    Bhattacharjee, Shibdas

    49257

India's fragile foreign policy towards neighbouring nations/

Shibdas Bhattacharjee--New Delhi: Overseas Press (India), 2017

This book approaches to perceive Indias foreign policy towards

the neighbouring nations where the criterion of judgment is

Indias strategic and diplomatic strengths as well as weaknesses.

The study unveils real state and actual strength of Indias sharing

land border with China, Pakistan, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, and

Bangladesh, as well as Indias maritime interests and

relationships with nations like Sri Lanka and Maldives which

bears great significance and larger implications in safeguarding

Indias international border, territorial integrity and maritime

interests in different front and frontiers; North, Northeast,

Northwest and the South-coastal regions as well as the security of

the rest of the nation. The venture exposes the callous approach

of Indias foreign policy think-tank and the failure in articulating

definite policy towards the neighbouring nations and how these

have impacted New Delhis military and strategic interests in the

    region and beyond.

    7 Daga, Poonam 49256

Diaspora and second generation adaptation/ Poonam Daga--New

    Delhi: Overseas Press (India), 2015

Expatriate writings cover the paradigms of the aloofness of

migrants on the strange land, their herculean efforts of

assimilation, adaptation and acculturation at various levels of

their living in a foreign land resulting into a distinct hybridised

identity. The first generation of immigrants often attempt to retain

their originality in the new land and in doing so they also

compel their off springs to do everything to preserve the native

culture thereby giving birth to double standards in their life.

Jhumpa Lahiri and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni reflected through

their novels and short story collections the pathos of a split

identity which they had experienced in their own life.

Interpretation of vivid shades of immigrants personalities

through a variety of characters under various situations is the crux

of the world portrayed by Lahiri and Divakaruni. Considering the

characters of successive generations the reading evolves that the

confusion and losses diminish with the descending generation and

thus increase the acceptance for the adopted land. Racial

discrimination, generational clashes, distinct parenting and

relational disturbances are the issues that can be earmarked as the

problems confronted by the people of diasporas.

Electoral politics in India: the resurgence of the Bharatiya Janta

Party/ edited by Suhas Palshikar, Sanjay Kumar and Sanjay Lodha--

    London: Routledge, 2017

    49254

The themes presented in this book are the deliberations of the

Seminar titled "Understanding the 2014 General Elections

Mandate and Its Impact on National Politics" held at the Mohan

Lal Sukhadia University, Udaipur on 5-7 February 2015. This

volume attempts to explain the BJP's victory in the General

Elections held in 2014 and offer explanations for the same by

looking at three different terrains: parties, states and issues. It

looks into party-level explanations of both the BJP and the

Congress and how they performed among their core

constituencies. It also focuses on those states where the BJP saw

massive victories and also mention those states where due to the

predominance of state specifications, the party could not perform

well. This book also has chapters on leadership, locality, age,

class and media exposure as these were important determinants

in these elections. The volume presents an in - depth analysis of

the electoral results, state-wise studies, the factors leading up to

these outcomes, and the road India has travelled since then.

change that occurs, and investment in adaptation to climate

changes that cannot be avoided; regional and sectoral key risks

and vulnerabilities. Also addressed are prospects for adaptation,

Women and refugee law: perspectives from India/ Sumita T.

Kanojia --Umbergaon: Fidelity International Publications, 2016

The present book tries to explore some of the issues that arise

when the phenomenon of refugee flow is viewed through a

gendered lens by concentrating on the experience of Sri Lankan

Tamil women refugees in Tamil Nadu refugee camps or

settlements. Divided into seven chapters, discusses the origin,

evolution and need for reconceptualising International Refugee

Law and provides an analysis of why a gender-based refugee law

is imperative. Indias refugee policy in general and through a

gender lens and the role of international organizations such as the

UNHCR and domestic NGOs is also examined. Also provides an

overview of Sri Lankan scenario, reasons for people fleeing to

India with special reference to women refugees. After examining

the historical background of the problem, analyses the situation

of the Sri Lankan Tamil women refugees in the camps of India.

The significance of clashing culture and divergent social norms

that they face on daily basis is highlighted. Examines problems

women in refugee camps encountered while fleeing Sri Lanka and

in the camps they are presently housed. It examines the extent to

which the present laws ameliorate the problems they face. Lastly

Watershed management: an empirical study at drought prone

Districts of West Bengal/ Moumita Moitra Maiti-- Mumbai:

    Himalaya Publishing House, 2017

The present work attempts to understand the cause of water

scarcity and aims to explore all possibilities of water management

at a basin scale by constructing a water budget for a basin situated

in drought prone Districts of Purulia and Bankura in West Bengal.

It attempts to understand the interaction of rainfall, land, soil and

land use at mouza level leading to seasonal runoff,

evapotranspiration and infiltration. A water harvesting proposal

has been formulated based on estimation of water budget for

check dam construction and rooftop water harvesting. Rational

reservoir size for both check dam sites and rooftop water

harvesting has been designed. Suitable sites for excavating ponds,

plantations are selected using spatial analysis techniques of GIS.

Enhancing accountability in public service delivery through

citizen's charters: the Indian experience/ R.K Mishra and Geeta

    Potaraju--New Delhi: Academic Foundation, 2015

Public services are used by majority of the Indian population, and

the government of India has been pushing reforms to bring in

greater transparency, accountability and responsiveness in public

service delivery. This book focuses on citizens charter which is

one of the most effective tools used by governments world over

to improve service delivery especially to the poor. It narrates the

Indian experience of using citizens charter, at the center and

states as a tool for improving governance and bringing in greater

    efficiency and accountability.

    49252

Memorandum of understanding in India/ R.K. Mishra and Geeta

    Potaraju--New Delhi: Academic Foundation, 2016

The authors observe that though the Government has delegated

financial and administrative powers to PEs (public enterprises) to

a great extent to provide considerable financial leverage for

taking prudent decisions, the result are not satisfactory. It has

been several decades since the MoU system has been introduced

in India in the hope of incentivizing performance, yet there are

considerable numbers of PEs which are languishing in the fair and

good category in terms of performance. Performance challenges

still exist in the public sector enterprises which are mainly due to

inadequate systems, processes, and latest technology. The focus

now is on making the PEs more efficient and competitive so that

they can face the stiff market competition. There is a clear

direction that has been set with the Performance Management

Division taking lead and rolling out the overarching PMS and

implementing RFD. The RFD system provides a comprehensive

framework of performance measurement and management for all

the government departments/ministries, to develop performance

plans in sync with the national priorities and programmes. With

the RFD system in place, it will give greater stability to the MoU

    system and make it sustainable.

Education and development relationship in Punjab/ Maninder

Singh Sarkaria--Mumbai: Himalaya Publishing House, 2016

Education and development of a country go hand in hand and one

cannot exist without the other. Using secondary data on various

variables such as literacy rate, drop-out rate, number of teachers,

enrolment, pupil-teacher ratio, NSDP, per capita income, fertility

rate, population growth rate, incidence of poverty and

unemployment, etc. and primary data collected through survey of

1520 households from urban, semi-urban and rural habitations of

Punjab, the study has observed that expansion of education is

positively correlated with growth in NSDP as well as per capita

income. Educational progress is inversely related to poverty as

well as unemployment. There is a negative relationship between

educational growth and fertility rate, population growth rate and

child/infant mortality rate. Rise in the literacy rate has favourable

impact on life expectancy. The study strongly supports the view,

that the planners in the country should devote more resources to

education and they should refrain from applying cuts on

    education budget.

Gender parity in education and employment: a global perspective

    / Shashi Bala--Noida: V.V Giri National Labour Institute, 2017

Gender based discrimination in education is both a cause and a

consequence of broader forms of gender inequality in society.

This book is divided into three sections. The first section reviews

gender parity in education and employment at global level and

discusses global initiatives undertaken for reducing gender

inequality. Gender inequality in education is examined in terms

of out-of-school children, total enrolment in different levels of

education, youth and adult literacy rate, gender parity index on

the basis of gross enrolment ratio, etc. for the world as whole.

Gender inequality is shown in different countries on the basis of

employment by education level. Section two reviews the gender

parity achieved in education and employment in India. After

giving historical view of educational development, it looks into

the major initiatives undertaken by different ministries and

organisations for education, employment and human

development. The study also suggests important policy and

programme concerns which will help close the gender gap in

    education and employment.

Urban development in North-West India: emerging trends,

concerns and strategies/ Manoj Kumar Teotia--Chandigarh:

Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, 2016

Based on compilation of extensive data on various aspects of

urban development in North-Western India, the book is an

attempt to contribute to the existing debate on emerging trends,

concerns and strategies in urban development in India. With the

discussion on the city and state level case studies from the region

the volume tries to explore how state and city governments in

North-Western India have been dealing with the emerging urban

issues and challenges and what shot of local policies are emerging

to deal with the growing crucial urban problems. The manuscript

underlines issues and concerns relating to urbanisation, housing,

slums, poverty, urban infrastructure and services, urban planning

and governance in North-Western India. It also consolidates the

perception of residents about the same gathered from four major

towns of the region i.e. Amritsar, Srinagar, Faridabad and Shimla.

Urban development in North-Western region of India comprising

Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and

Chandigarh is at cross roads. Urban development seems to be

neglected in urban policy planning over successful planning eras.

The onset of liberal regimes in promoting development of real

estate markets, beginning of low interest home loans, lack of

strong regulation of land and housing deals seems to have made

them the commodity for speculation. Housing problem seem to

acquire serious dimension in the wake of rapid urbanization,

    commodification of land.

same time helping the personnel on the first responder level who

are planning to cope with what must at least initially seem like an

overwhelming attack. The author feels that the only way to

effectively deal with terrorism is to have a thorough

understanding of its present-day characteristics such as who is

involved and what weapons and tactics are the terrorists likely to

    be using.

Caste identities and the ideology of exclusion: a post-script on the

humanization of Indian social life/ Sebastian Velassery and

Reena Patra--New Delhi: Overseas Press (India), 2016

The present study is purported to examine and understand the

Indian caste system as the unique ideology of exclusivist doctrine

which has its distinctive and continuous impact on Indian social,

political and cultural life. This study intends to re-look at the

humanization claims of the social and political activists of India

and argue that the existing conditions prevailing in this country,

despite having attained political freedom, is not conducive yet, to

achieve human freedom; the reason is that Indian society is

overshadowed with caste considerations and its metaphysical

trappings where an individual is recognised and accepted in terms

of his caste or ethnicity. This book explores the social, political,

economic and cultural contents of Dalit transformation and the

way such transformation has paved way for the resurgence of the

human spirit. A central element in the humanization debate in the

Indian context is the aspirations and struggles of the marginalised

masses (Dalits) for a new identity and humanity based on the

values of equality, social justice and human dignity.
