Be A “Partner in Education” at Arbor View Elementary!Elkhorn Public Schools “Partners in Education” mentoring program is seeking adult volunteers to mentor Arbor View students. These mentors allow us to provide one-on-one academic support for students. Mentors are asked to volunteer for at least 30 minutes each week, and may indicate preferred grade levels and times. Orientation will be provided, and a building facilitator will be available to answer questions. To volunteer, or for more information, please contact mentoring coordinator, Lori Graves, at [email protected]

Arbor View Families! Your child should have brought home a

flier in their Friday folder this week!

This year’s main fundraiser is the FUN RUN WITH THE

EXPLORERS! It’s a 9-day program that kicks off with a Pep

Rally on Tuesday, September 5th. Families will then gather

pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and

we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on Sept 15 (K-5) and Sept 14

(pre-k). With our big goal of raising $15,000, we asked the

Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and

make it more profitable, easier, and fun.

This year we have decided to go 100% paid online. As you

make your pledges, you will be able to pay for your pledge

right onfunrun.com. If sponsors do not wish to pay by credit

card, they can simply send in cash or check with your student

before the Fun Run!

Students will also experience an amazing character theme,

CASTLE QUEST! An English castle theme all about being brave and

living with character. On their quest to regain Bravemore Castle,

students will learn the “SIX VIRTUES of a TRUE HERO” from a cast

of colorful characters. The character based program and videos will

be shared on our Arbor View PTO Facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/ArborViewElementaryPTO/

Donations will go toward funding classroom field trips,

Golden Sower books, Teacher Appreciation Week, Family

Formal, our annual Back to School Bash, and so much more!

So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also,

all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student

at the Fun Run! Thank you for your support!

Dear Families, Welcome back! I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Miss Wamsat and I am the 2-5 art teacher at Arbor View elementary (AM) and I am also the K-4 art teacher at Westridge elementary (PM). In the next few months you may hear your child call me by a new name. In October my name will change to Mrs. Wellendorf. We have some really fun and exciting lessons planned for the 2017/2018 school year! SQUARE 1 ART, a fundraiser (specializing in your child’s creations) is starting to come together in your child’s art classroom. We are busy creating, learning new skills/techniques and working with a variety of art mediums. Next time you are in the building, take a look at a few of the products available to order! There are posters hanging up around the building and the display case out front shows a few items as well. A portion of the proceeds earned come right back to the art room!! These products make great birthday, holiday and incentive gifts for your child, family members, and your child’s classroom teacher. Thank you for your support. Thank you,Miss Wamsat

Arrival and dismissal procedures: -Please review and become familiar with the following procedures for arrival and dismissal:If you are planning on dropping off and picking up children in vehicles please be mindful of the following procedures.

1. The drop off lane runs directly in front of the school beginning at the southeast entrance ending in front of the preschool. There is no parking in the drop off/pick up lane.

2. Pull as far forward as possible in the drop off lane. There are signs along the sidewalk in front of the building designating it as a loading/unloading zone. If staff members are waving you forward please don’t take offense, we are trying to keep the line moving while keeping kids safe!

3. Children should exit cars on the curbside. Drivers should not get out of their cars to let children out of cars in the drop off and pick up lane. This will slow down the process. If children need assistance getting out there will be adults to help.

4. Drivers can exit the drive heading north or south on 208th street. Please note that Fort Street is closed just north of the school.

5. The parking lot on the south side of the building can be used if you’d like to walk your child(ren) to the school. 6. There are four reserved parking spaces in the front of the building. These are designated as handicap spaces.

Please do not use these without proper identification. Two of them are specifically designated for vans. 7. The left lane is a thru lane and should not be used at anytime for dismissal or arrival8. Students will exit the building at 3:06 in the following locations:

Kindergarten: Preschool entrance/exit just north of the main entrance to the building - door #21st and 2nd grades: Main entrance - door #13rd grade: East side of the gym (this will be known as the kids campus entrance/exit) - door #144th and 5th grades: Southeast entrance/exit leading into 4th and 5th grades - door #10Kids can be picked up anywhere along the drop off and pick up lane.

7. Older siblings are encouraged to walk via the sidewalk, to wait with younger siblings for a ride or to walk home. Please let the teachers know if this is the plan.

*All families are encouraged to get familiar with the drop off and pick up lanes. Driving through a couple times is recommended prior to school as it will really help with the traffic flow during these times. As always student safety is our number one priority during these times. If a staff member asks for your assistance in moving forward in the line or if they have a suggestion for you please be kind and follow their lead. Please discuss these procedures with anyone else who may be dropping off or picking up children at Arbor View.

*We ask that all adults and children use the safety patrol crossings at all times and do not walk across traffic. This is unsafe and it slows down the traffic pattern.

Preschool arrival/dismissal - When transporting your child to and from school, we ask that the children arrive no earlier than 8:15 a.m. for the morning class and 12:15 p.m. for the afternoon class, as we are trying to prepare for your child’s day at school. Staff will pick up students at the preschool door (#2) at 8:20 and 12:20 and will be dismissed from the preschool door at 11:30 and 3:30 each school day.

If you are receiving special education transportation services, Denae, Special Services Secretary, will be contacting you to let you know the exact times your child will be picked up or dropped off. Please inform Denae of the days, times and addresses. If your child is going to be absent and receives transportation services, please call Denae at 289-2579 ext. 11000.

Recently we have seen an increased number of requests for information regarding the importance of limiting screen time and engaging kids in other activities. Please read the below article regarding one idea that can be used to transition from a technology-filled day to a device-free night. Device Free DinnerDid you know that 92% of parents feel that quality conversations at dinner time are essential to connecting with their kids? Yet many worry that devices at the table are taking away from those moments. Curbing technology and device use at the table, including restaurants and not just home, is vital to keeping the conversation going and helping kids see that what’s going on in their lives matters. Below are a few ways families can implement a device free dinner and connect over mealtimes:1. “What was the best thing that happened to you today?” Get kids talking about their day and discover what brings them joy or what type of things make an impact on their day. It’s this type of conversation that may just open your eyes to a new topic or activity that your child has recently discovered. Take this opportunity to find out what activities your child finds enjoyable, who they hang out with, etc.2. It’s Your Turn, Pick A Topic. Giving each member of the family a chance to choose the topic of conversation allows each individual to express themselves and gives insight into what’s going on in each person’s head. This can be done during every meal, where each member chooses a topic and it is discussed for a set amount of time, or it can be a daily opportunity, where each day, a different family member gets to choose the topic of conversation for the duration of the meal. Either way, make sure every individual participates, even if it’s simply acknowledging a new area of interest for the family member that chose the topic. 3. Practice What You Preach. Kids follow the example of those around them, so parents taking phone calls and responding to emails or texts during dinner only shows them that the rules you put into place only apply to others. Show your children that you are taking the initiative seriously and give them your undivided attention. That phone call can be returned and the text message can certainly wait, and by doing so, you’re showing your child that they matter to you more than the person on the other end of line.Whether it is a sit-down meal at your family table or a quick run through the drive through, avoiding the use of technology during dinnertime guarantees that families have the daily opportunity to connect with each other. Take the time to listen and learn about every family members’ day, you never know what new thing you might learn from it. For more information on managing a device-free meal, check out https://thefamilydinnerproject.org/. Portable PowerSchoolPowerSchool has gone mobile! The PowerSchool for Parents app is available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play. Parents can easily view each child’s progress in a single feed to check grades, review assignments and more. After downloading the app, enter code BFTS to find Elkhorn Public Schools and then log in using your PowerSchool parent access login. This app is only available for parents of students in grades 4-12 (4th grade parents cannot access until after the conclusion of the 1st quarter).

Reminders From Your School Nurse…

If you haven’t done so already, please get those required kindergarten physical and vision exams turned in, and copies of updated vaccines.

We want to take great care of your child, and one way to help us do that is to provide the health office with current health information and medication needed for your child.

If your child has any health needs such as Asthma, Severe Allergy, Diabetes, Seizures, etc we must have an action plan on file that is signed by the doctor and the parent. This information is very important, so we know exactly what is best to do for your child, in the event of an emergency. Please remember if your student has any medications such as an inhaler, Epi-Pen, Benedryl, etc to be used in an emergency situation, we need to have those available at school, with a signed medication authorization, so trained staff can administer.

If your child requires any medication while at school, this includes all prescription and/or all over-the-counter (e.g. ibuprofen, acetaminophen, cough drops, etc) ALL MEDICATION requires a medication authorization, signed by the physician and the parent. All medication must be unexpired and provided in the original store packaging or pharmacy labeled container.

Links to blank forms, or your doctor may use their preferred version.
