1 Definitions, Philosophy, Staffing and Training 2 hours

Overview of definitions included in Colorado Assisted Living Regulations (Chapter VII) as well as common terms used in the industry; the basic philosophy of assisted living and how it relates to Colorado regulations; goals and procedures for staff training, organization and schedules.

2 Understanding Resident Rights 2.5 hours

How Colorado regulations define resident rights; ways to teach resident rights to staff and how to ensure meeting the intent of the regulations; how to resolve internal complaints and grievances using resident councils and other processes; how to work most effectively with the Ombudsmen; understanding regulations regarding the use of restraints.

3 Ethical Caregiving: The Leader’s Role in Developing a Caregiver’s Code of Ethics – 2 hours

What a code of ethics means; why it is important to have a written code for caregivers; how to develop a code of ethics; positive outcomes of implementing a code and how it can help put Colorado regulations into action.

4 Understanding the Aging Body – Tools to Support Accurate Assessments and Improved Caregiving 2 hours

Discussion of both normal and abnormal changes associated with aging; signs and symptoms associated with abnormal changes; tips for caregivers when confronting changes associated with aging; links to valuable resources.

5 Assessments and Care Planning in Colorado 2.5 hours

What is included in an assessment; when assessments are required; the process for conducting assessments; how proper assessments support effective care planning; examples of assessment and care plan documents.

6 Creating a Safe Environment for Residents and Staff 2.5 hours

Training requirements for safety and emergency preparedness; how to create emergency and disaster plans; how to create an effective fire safety program; tips on fire prevention; suggested policies for emergency situations; hazard communication basics; how to limit exposure to bloodborne pathogens; how to create a safe workplace for employees; how to reduce workplace hazards and repetitive motion injuries.

7 Dealing with Emergencies 2.5 hours

Basic steps for handling health-related emergencies; how to practice universal precautions; how to identify and provide first aid for a variety of common occurrences.

8 Handling Difficult Situations and Behaviors 2.5 hours

How to understand the unique feelings and needs of seniors with losses; symptoms and underlying causes of disruptive behaviors; understanding and responding to disruptive behaviors; interventions for specific challenging behaviors; steps for discharging residents.

9 Nutritious, Delicious and Safe Food Programs 2.5 hours

How to create a food service program that meets the nutritional and social needs of residents; unique nutritional needs of seniors; barriers to good nutrition and how to overcome them in programming; how to implement the requirements of the regulations in creating a high quality food service program.

10 Activities and Enrichment 2.5 hours

Why an activities program is important for residents; how to design and implement a creative, well-rounded activity program; ideas for new and interesting activities; ways to increase resident involvement in activities; special activity considerations for memory impaired or other special needs residents; links to resources that provide valuable information.

11 Alzheimer’s and Memory Care 4 hours Basic Understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia,

including causes, treatments and progression of the disease; warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease; how the person with memory loss experiences the world; how to avoid weight loss problems; how to assess pain in non verbal residents; Colorado regulations related to caring for residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

12 Understanding Death and Dying: Compassion, Ethics and Hospice Care – 2.5 hours

How to continue to provide professional care despite the sense of loss when someone dies; how to work through grief when someone dies; how to resolve ethical dilemmas in death and dying; how to effectively utilize hospice care programs.
