However, I am sure there is more that we can do to reach out to these and other groups interested in rangeland management. This is a topic that is almost always discussed when planning our annual meetings. If you have ideas on how we can do more to reach out to producers and other interest groups, I would appre- ciate your suggestions. I know one thing we can do is to recognize producers who are doing a good job of managing their rangelands by nominating them for the Excellence in Rangeland Stewardship Award. This year the annual meeting will be held in Cody and will be a joint meeting with the Soil and Water Conservation Society and The Wildlife Society. The planning committee is working hard to make this a very interesting and educa- tional meeting. If you would like more information on the meeting please contact Marji Patz. I look forward to seeing you there!! Charlie * Deadline has been extended to September 15, 2009

As the summer winds down and we wrap up our field season, I ask that each of you take time out of your busy sched-ules to consider the many good things that your fellow SRM members and producers have been doing for rangeland resources.

Each year the Wyoming Section presents awards that acknowledge outstanding contributions people have made to rangeland management. I know there are many deserving folks out there and I encourage the membership to nominate them for one of the following awards:

• Award of Merit• Trail Boss• Outstanding Woman or Man of the Range• Outstanding Young Range Professional• Sustained Lifetime Achievement Award• Excellence in Rangeland Stewardship

The criteria and nomination forms for most of these awards are in the Awards Handbook that was included as an at-tachment in the email recently sent by Misty Hays. The Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award and Outstanding Young Range Professional Award were adopted in 2006 and are not in the handbook. However, if you would like to nominate someone for these two awards, please contact one of the council members and we will make sure you receive a nomination form. Please submit your nominations to Misty Hays by September 1, 2009.*

Brett BurgessNortheast Council Representative

As we come to the end of another busy field season here in Casper, I don’t know about the rest of you but I’m glad to see fall on the horizon! It seems like the summer hours just slip away and we’re left wondering where the time went. Life (especially in summer) seems to keep us busy and away from opportunities to volunteer our time for the benefit of SRM, its members, and our communities. Here in Casper we have a couple of opportunities in the near future to be SRM ambassadors. Patty Slack, with the I&E committee has put in a lot of effort (among others) to give SRM a presence at the Wildlife Expo being held here in Casper September 9–12. The SRM booth at the expo is a great opportunity to become involved and take part in a great community event that brings people in from all over the state. The Wildlife Expo is a great venue to meet folks from many different demographics here in Wyoming and provides us with the opportunity to share information on SRM and the benefits the Society can provide. Most importantly I think it’s a great setting to introduce the great youth of our state to edu-cational and outreach opportunities such as Wy-RED and High School Youth Forum. Youth are a key success to the future of SRM here in Wyoming. Their input and views of Wyoming’s rangelands and natural resources are essential for us to appreciate and understand. It’s events like the Expo which of-fer us exposure to these youth and their fresh perspectives on the future of Wyoming’s unique natural resources, and how they value Wyoming’s landscapes.

We also have an opportunity to give back to the community of Casper by participating in the Platte River Revival cleanup project being held September, 19. This event provides a great occasion to spend quality time with family and friends, while giving back to the community. Personally, this is an event that my family has come to look forward to and participate in. Although this event falls outside the scope of an official SRM event it provides a great forum to discuss natural resource related issues, as a member of SRM, with our neighbors. When we work side by side with those in our community we have informative dialogues that probably wouldn’t occur under any other circumstance.

I would encourage all of us as members of SRM to take advantage of those opportunities in our own towns to get involved, become informed about those local issues related to natural resources, as well as other important issues that are of concern to us and those we share our communities with. I look for-ward to visiting with all of you in November at the annual Wyoming Section meeting in Cody. Have a wonderful fall, get the hay in, the cows shipped, the kids to school (YEA!), the leaves picked up, the trim on the house painted, and prepare to settle in for another wonderful Wyoming winter! So-long.
