Networks, Space and Organisations Kerstin Sailer, June 2010

Theoretical Context: Social Relations, Networks and Organisations

People participate in multiple networks: cross-cutting social circles (Simmel 1890)

Spatial and transpatial networks (Hillier and Hanson 1984; Hillier 2009)

Spatial Networks: we inhabit or move

through them, ‘where we are’,

neighbourhoods, face-to-faceinteractions, proximity

Transpatial Networks: ‘who we are’,

e.g. kinship networks, guilds,

professional memberships, clubs,

societies, affiliation, belief, etc.

The Interplay of Networks, Space, People, and Organisations

Example: Frequency of Interaction as a Result of Office Location in a University School

UNIVERSITY PRE (2005) UNIVERSITY POST(2007)

Daily interaction was 65% team internal, yet 91% floor internal (PRE)

Daily interaction was 54% team internal, yet 86% floor internal (POST)
