TheworkofRotarybeginsinthecommunity,andeverycommunityhasitsownuniqueneedsandconcerns.Whileweserveincountlessways,throughTheRotaryFounda>onwe’vefocusedoureffortsinsixkeyareastomaximizeourimpact.Theseareasencompasssomeoftheworld’smostcri>calandwidespreadhumanitarianneeds,andwehaveaprovenrecordofsuccessinaddressingthem.OneofthemisDiseasePreven>onandTreatment.Rotary'stoppriorityistheeradica>onofpolio,butourmemberstakeonfargreaterresponsibili>estofightdisease.Wesetuphealthcampsandtrainingfacili>esinundevelopedcountriesandincommuni>esstrugglingwithHIV/AIDSandMalaria.Wedesignandbuildtheinfrastructurefordoctors,nurses,governments,andpartnerstoreachtheoneinsixpeopleintheworldwhocan'taffordtopayforhealthcare.Diseasepreven>onandtreatmenttakesonmanyforms,fromsuppor>ngstudiestohelpingimmunizepeopletoimprovingdrinkingwaterandthesanita>oninfrastructure.TheworldreliesonRotarytotackletheseglobalchallenges,andtosetanexampleforotherstofollow.Herearesomesugges>onsonhowRotaryclubs,Districtsandourservicepartnerscanaddresstheseneedsbothlocallyandinterna>onally:
• Supporthealtheducationprogramsthatexplainhowdiseasesarespreadandpromotewaystoreducetheriskoftransmission.
• Helpimmunizepeopleagainstinfectiousdiseases.
• Supportcontinuingeducationandtrainingforhealthworkersthroughscholarships,andpublicrecognition.
• Improveandexpandaccesstolow-costandfreehealthcareinunderservedareas.
• Improvesanitationfacilitiesbyprovidingtoiletsandlatrinesthatflushintoasewerorsafeenclosure.
• Promotegoodhygienehabitsthrougheducation.Properhandwashingwithsoapandwatercanreducediarrheacasesbyupto35percent.
• Developorsupportprogramsthatprovideimmunizationsandantibiotics.Measles,malaria,pneumonia,AIDS,anddiarrhealdiseasesaretheleadingcausesofdeathinchildrenunderfive.

EndTrachoma2020IhaveoftenconveyedtoyouRIPresidentJohnGerm’scommentsinrelationtoopportunities.Inparticular,hebelievesthattheonlydifferencebetweenasmallopportunityandagreatone,iswhatyoudowithit.AttheDistrict9800ConferenceinSheppartontheplanistoofficiallyannounceanexcitingprojectbeinginitiatedbytheRotaryClubofMelbourne-toeliminatetrachomafromAustralia.Thiswillbea‘GREAT’opportunityforRotaryClubsaroundAustraliatojointogether,eliminatetrachoma,andcelebrate100yearsofRotaryinAustralia.
Trachoma is an eye infection that can diminisheyesightor, inextremesituations, totallyblindthesufferer.Australiaistheonly developedcountry inthe world where trachoma is still endemic. Aproject team has been established, liaising withgovernment, non-government and otherorganisations working in the field, while scopingpotential avenues of funding and resourcing.Trachoma is found only in remote indigenouscommunities, and a number have already beenvisitedtoinformthemof theproject.TheincomingRIPresidentIanRiseleyandallDistrictsinAustralia

Rotary’sUniqueStructure–TogetherWeCanDoAnything!Inpreparationfordeliveringthe1994SirAngusMitchellOration,RotaryClubofMelbournemember,DavidWittnervisitedtheStateLibraryofVictoriawiththeobjectiveoflookingthroughthesubstantialmaterialandmemorabiliathatSirAngusdonatedtothelibrary.DavidwaslookingforsomeinsightintoSirAngus’shopesandaspirationsfor
theRotaryworldintheyearsthatleduptohisyearofofficeasWorldPresidentin1948/49,andintheperiodthatsucceededit.ThepersonallettersexchangedbetweenSirAngusandPaulHarris,andthemanyotherleadersofRotaryenabledDavidtoconcludethattheAngusMitchellphilosophyforRotary'sgrowthcouldbeachievedbytheacceptanceofsixguidelines,oneofwhichwas“ThatRotarycouldembraceprojectsthatwouldnototherwisebetackledonaglobalscalebyindividualnations,simplybecausethedaywouldcomewhenRotary'suniquestructurewouldenableitto”.HowinsightfulitwasforSirAngusMitchelltoseeRotary’spotentialthirtybeforeanotherAustralianRIPresident,SirClemRenoufcommencedapolioimmunizationpilotprograminthePhilippines.In1985Rotaryofficiallylaunchedthe
globalcampaigntoEradicatePolio,usingRotary’shuge,powerfulnetworkandTheRotaryFoundationtodowhatnoindividualnationcould.TheworkofourFoundationneverstopsandthenetworkofRotaryisaspowerfultodayasiteverhasbeen.Withtheseresourcesworkingtogether,wecandoanything!

Rotary’sGardenDesignfest2016heldontheweekendsofNovember12-13andNovember19-20raisedarecord$130,000.EverycentwenttoRotaryandchildren’schari&es.Organised by Kew, BrightonNorth and CentralMelbourneclubs, the two-yearly event afracted 17,000gardenvisits.ItisbyfarthebiggestopengardenshowinAustralia.GDFchairmanPhilMor>mer(RCBrightonNorth)saidtheraisings fromtheDesignfestssince2004nowtotalmorethan$500,000.Theyeventaresocomplextoorganiseandrunthatthecommifeehasalreadybegunplanningmee>ngsforthe2018show.HundredsofRotarians andfriendsvolunteeredatthegardensandmarshaledcrowdsinthecoldandwetofthefirstweekend,andamidtheheatanddustofthesecondweekend.2016wasthelargestandmostcomplexstagingyet:
• 46gardenswereopened,18morethanin2014• Itwasconductedovertwoweekends,notthesingleweekendofpastevents• Gardenswereopenedinfivemoreregions:Bendigo,Ballarat,Geelong,MacedonRangesandWest
Gippsland,aswellas2014’sEuroa.Phil says, “Regionally basedgardendesignerswereabletodisplay theirwork andpeopleliving intheregionswereableto visit gardens withouttravellinglongdistances.”Tradi>onallytheeventfocusedon gardens in Melbourne’sleafyinnersuburbs.This yearitspread to more d iversesuburbs including Blackburn,Vermont,KilsythandCaulfield.E a c h o r g a n i z i n g c l u bnominated a charity for itsshare of the proceeds. Similarly, Euroa RC providedmembers and friends asvolunteersandgotadona>onfortheEuroaHealthBuildingFund. A numberofmetropolitanandcountryclubshadsimilararrangements.In2014therehadbeensomecomplaintsthatsmallergardenvisits wereoverpricedsoa three->erpricingsystemwascreatedthisyear.Thiswas$12perbiggardenentry(upfrom$10),$8fornormalgarden,and$5forsmallgarden.Therewerenocomplaintsthisyear.Packages gaveaccesstoall28first-weekendgardensinMelbourneandtheMorningtonPeninsulafor$60.Forthe18second-weekendregionalgardens,thepackagepricewas$40.Philsays manypeoplevisited10or12gardensona weekend:“Oneladywhovisited21gardenscertainlygothermoniesworth.”Con$nuedover-

ThemuchacclaimedCamberwellRotary“SeedsofPeace”projectandbookreachedanewsummitinNovemberwhenitwasnominatedasafinalistinthepres&giousShrineOfRemembranceMedalaward,infrontoftheGovernorofVictoriaandotherassembleddignitaries.TheprojecthadinputsfromtheclusterofRotaryClubsinBoroondara,andwasdrivenbytheCamberwellClubtopromotepeaceinthelocalsecondaryschoolsintheAnzacCentenaryyear.Sevenstudentswereselectedfrompeaceessayssubmifed,andtheytravelledtotheAnzacbeachesinTurkeylastyearforthecentenary,whileathomewholeofschoolceremonieswereconductedonAnzacDayinpar>cipa>ngschools,andSeedsofPeaceplaquesandTurkishpinetreeswereplantedtomarkthemilestone.TheprojectwasrecognisedbytheAustralianGovernment,andwasawardedanAnzacCentenaryGrant,andwasalsosuccessfulinachievingaRotaryDistrict9800grantfromit’sRotaryFounda>on.Rotaryhasalongstandingcommitmenttopromo>nginterna>onalunderstanding,peaceandgoodwill–theSeedsofPeaceprojecthascon>nuedthisworkandenhancedRotary’sstandinginthecommunity.

OnMonday14thNovember,106Rotarians,partnersandfriendsa,endedajointclusterdinnerattheYarravilleClubtocelebratetheRotaryFounda&on100yearsof“doinggoodintheworld”.EightClubswererepresentedfromtheChirnsideCluster(HoppersCrossing,Laverton-PointCook,WerribeeandWyndham)andtheHobsonsBayCluster(Altona,AltonaCity,WilliamstownandYarraville).TheMCwastheever-reliablePeterShepheard(fromAltona)andhebegantheeveningwithaheartyrollcallofeachclub.PDGIvenMackay(Yarraville)providedaninvoca>onwhichemphasizedtheinterna>onalityofRotarybyreadingoutdifferentRotaryGracesfromaroundtheworld.PDGMurrayVersoproposedtheToasttoRotaryInterna>onalbygivingabriefhistoryoftheimpactRotaryhashadontheworld–spending3.4billiondollarsonhumanitarianandeduca>onalprograms,immunizing2.5billionchildrenagainstpoliomyeli>sandtraining1000PeaceFellows.

CanterburyRotaryClubmembersarebackfromthe20thannualtriptothePhilippineshelpingtorestoresightandhearingtolow-incomevillagers.ClubpresidentDougHawley,makinghis17thtrip,ledapartyof23volunteersandstudentstoMindoroIslandlastOctober.Theyscreened700peopleforcataractsandothereyeissuesand9,200childrenfrom25schoolsforearinfec>ons.TwoFilipinosurgeonsperformed454freeeyeopera>ons,including300forcataracts,inthreetownsduringthesix-dayclinic,arecordfortheprogram.Hundredsofpeoplealsogoteyedrops,readingglassesandsunglassestopreventfurthersundamagetotheirsight.Thepartyalsofound40%ofschoolchildrencheckedhadhearingproblemsduetoearinfec>onsandimpactedwax,bothfromcontaminatedwateranddo-it-yourselfafemptsatearcleaning.ThesechildrenweretreatedbyaFilipinoENTspecialisttravellingwiththeparty.“Atoneprimaryschooltheprincipalherselfhadasevereearinfec>on,”Hawleysaid.Thevolunteersscreenpeoplewithbyusingsimplesightandearchecks,suchasreadingchartsandotoscopicexamina>onstoiden>fythoseneedingmedicaltreatment.AllmedicaltreatmentisthencarriedoutbyqualifiedFilipinos,whichavertstheredtapeinvolvedifmedicalworkisdonebyforeigners.“Localandprovincialauthori>es,localRotaryclubs,andthePhilippinesCataractFounda>onteamsupporttheeffort”Hawleysays.“DatesaresetmonthsinadvanceandthelocalRotaryclubsprovidethevenuesandmakesureeveryoneknowsabouttheclinics.”
TheVictorianvolunteersincludedsixRotarians,thirteenfriendsofRotaryandfourLatrobeUniversityorthop>csstudents.Theclubpaidthetravelexpensesofthestudents,thethreeFilipinomedicosandthefivelocalCataractFounda>onworkers.Thebudgetfortheexercisewas$40,000,including$30,000donatedbythevolunteersonthetrip.Theclub’sprograminthepast20yearshasrestoredsightto4,200villagersandtreatedover20,000childrenforearproblemstopreventlongtermhearingloss.CanterburyRChas52members,upfrom45lastyear,andwelcomesnewmemberswho’dliketovolunteerforcommunityserviceprojects.
