Network Management System Selection Process Introduction • The Journey……. • Dashboard is a Network Monitoring System (NMS) that processes
SNMP traps received from Network equipment failures. Raw network alarms are correlated into higher-level alarms stored in a MySQL database. It is also integrated with Nagios for monitoring network services.

Main Drivers: • Faster Correlation. • Greater Flexibility. • Loose Coupling with other core business systems: CMDB, Ticketing
System. • More Dynamic. • Greater Accuracy/Reliability. • More Scalable.

The Options: • Do Nothing. • Change existing system. • Re-develop system. • Use open-source system that is modified. • Procure a commercial off the shelf system (COTS).

The Method: • Workshops set up with key personal to gather system requirements. • MoSCoW categorisation of business requirements. • Explode system into core components. • Analysis of core components. • Production of process flow diagrams. • Review of open-source NMS.
• WebNMS, Spiceworks, OpManager, OpenNMS, Zenoss, Zabbix, Hyperic, NetXMS
• Review of COTS. • IBM Netcool
• Develop Prototype.

The Options: • Do Nothing
• The current system does not satisfy some of the key business requirements. This option would give no business benefit.
• Change existing system • It is not technically possible to modify the existing code to meet the
key business requirements. This option was not viable. • Re-develop system
• The new proposed architecture is event-driven with many processes being multi-threaded. All of the business requirements would be met.

The Options (cont.): • Use open-source system that is modified.
• Although development time is reduced, not all of the business requirements would be met. The OpenNMS API reviewed was found to be unable to facilitate the additional functionality required by the business.
• Procure a commercial off the shelf system (COTS). • The NETCool and Tivoli suite of applications, satisfied the majority
of the ‘Must’ business requirements, however the price far exceeded the available budget. On price alone, this was not a viable option.
