LISBONCommunity Focus

Lisbon takes prides in offering benefits of both

a small and large city with its slogan,

“Large enough to serve you and small

enough to know you.”

Located along the beautiful Sheyenne River in southeast North Dakota, Lisbon is a tight knit community of 2,124 residents. Here, community members support one another and are always willing to lend a hand. Lisbon is a place where dreams begin and are achieved, following the example set by founder Joseph L. Colton.

Originating from New York, Colton was looking for adventure when he and his family moved west to Minnesota. He continued west to Fargo where he met Major A.W. Edwards. As the editor and publisher of the Fargo Republican, Major Edwards received word that the Northern Pacific Railroad was planning to add a Fargo Southwestern Branch. Major Edwards and Colton began dreaming of a town along the route of the proposed Fargo Southwestern. After carefully evaluating a map, Colton decided to file a claim for land where the railroad would have to cross the Sheyenne River. When the claim was accepted on May 18, 1880, Colton began to plan the town, which he named after his wife’s hometown in New York, Lisbon. Although many other towns were establishing, Colton, with the help of Major Edwards, used political connections to route the rail-road through Lisbon and become the Ransom County seat.

After 137 years, Lisbon continues to grow, and prides itself in being “large enough to serve you and small enough to know you.” Lisbon has several banks, retail businesses, restaurants, motels and medical services. CHI Lisbon Health offers a variety of services to patients in both the hospital and clinic. The 25-bed critical access hospital has a 24-hour emergency level V trauma center. Lisbon is also home to dentists and chiropractors.

The North Dakota Veterans Home also resides in Lisbon. Built on 90 acres along the Sheyenne River, the Veterans Home offers a scenic view to their residents. The home offers 150 beds for honorably discharged veterans and

their spouses. It also provides residents with activities including a theatre, library and exercise room.

The community works together to host many events throughout the year. Lisbon hosts Happy Days the third weekend of June, the Ransom County Fair the end of August and the Sunday night stock car races at the Sheyenne River Speedway from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The outdoors is a large part of the Lisbon community and is perfect for hunting and fishing enthusiasts, as well as those who golf and ski with the Sheyenne Grasslands, Dead Colt Creek Recreation Area, Fort Ransom State Park, Lisbon Bissel Golf Course and Bears Den Ski Resort nearby. The area includes the Sheyenne Valley National Scenic Byway and the North Country Trail offering breathtaking scenery with many trees along the Sheyenne River.

It’s true DRN is moving to 100% digital television service! Customers will have access to DRN’s digital lineup, including more channels and a wide variety of music channels.

The old analog service is at end of life and will be eliminated. On March 1, 2018, every television will need either a HD Digital Transport Adapter (HD DTA) or a MCard cable card device such as a TiVo box or cable-card ready TV. Without these set-top boxes, DRN television service will not work.

To avoid service interruption, DRN strongly encourages customers to order the set-top boxes as soon as possible. By getting a box today, customers will receive HD channels with clearer and higher quality. Also, a DTA box is available to set parental controls and includes an interactive program guide.

DRN will be giving customers their first DTA box free with the interactive guide. Digital boxes are activated before they leave DRN. There is no need to call into DRN to activate them. The box will complete a set-up process when connected to your TV for the first time. Please be patient and leave the box plugged in as the set-up process may take up to 45 minutes. For every additional television, customers will need to purchase either an interactive guided DTA box for $2.95 per month or 99¢ per month for a nonguided DTA box.

DRN is working to make this transition as easy as possible for customers. Once customers have placed their order DRN will contact them when their box is ready for pickup or delivery. If questions arise, please contact 344-5000. n
