March 2015 Online media, such as email, texting, and Facebook, seem to have become the primary way of communicating these days. Being ‘connected’ to someone means that you’ve accepted their request on LinkedIn, and the term ‘face time’ is now most recognized as an app to make video calls on an iPhone. But off-line is where the real magic happens. It is the connection that you make with someone when you meet for the first time, or how you feel when you see an old friend, and it’s like no time has passed since your last visit. This industry is built on relationships. You learn that in a very short amount of time when you enter into distribution and are welcomed into the fold very quickly. 2015

Online media, such as email, texting, and Facebook, seem to have become the primary way of communicating these days.

Almost immediately, you experience the genuine, long-standing friendships that have developed through hundreds of meetings, dinners and association gatherings. The topics can vary between business, family, sports, or the economy, but it’s the time together that deepens the relationship, which becomes the business relationship that is the grease that keeps the wheels of this industry turning.

Connecting with others is critical to the continued growth of our group and the long-term success of our industry, which is why we chose the theme Value Relationships for the 2015 NetPlus Alliance Annual Meeting. Join us April 12-14, at the beautiful M Resort in Henderson, Nevada, and get in on some real face time with your fellow NetPlus Alliance distributors and suppliers. We look forward to seeing you there!

What’sYour“CorePurpose?”

When we initiated our current strategic planning

process two and a half years ago, one of the first things we had to do was to articulate our core purpose. After a significant amount of research and debate, we settled on:

“HELPING NORTH AMERICAN SMALL BUSINESSES SUCCEED.”

After all, we have many small businesses among our 380 distributor members and 165 supplier partners, and even for the large companies that are a part of the group, we usually deal with segments of these businesses that are essentially small units. Furthermore, all of these large companies were small businesses at one time in the past.

Our goal is to help you grow your top line revenues with increased product sales opportunities. If our group purchases grow faster than the industry as a whole, we have succeeded in reaching that goal. You will hear more from Jennifer at the Annual Meeting on how we did in 2014. NetPlus Alliance distributors increased their purchases from our suppliers by double-digit percentages, while the industry (as measured by an index of public companies) only grew by half of that.

So have you determined your Core Purpose? If not, you need to get an outside facilitator, take some time away from your business, and gather your team to develop a strong plan to grow your company.

I can tell you without a doubt, that our planning process has changed and improved our company by 1000%. We are not the same company we were when we celebrated our 10th anniversary in 2012. We have grown significantly with new people, new technology, new processes, better communications, and major additions to our supplier and distributor ranks.

TheMeeting

I want to add my voice to the others in this newsletter encouraging you to attend our Annual Meeting in April. I have been in this industry since 1969. I have attended hundreds of conventions, conferences, advisory board meetings, local distributor group meetings, and buying group meetings. I never came home from any of those without an idea that could help my company be a better distributorship. It could be a new product line, a human resources issue, a profit margin thought, solutions to an inventory management or warehousing problem, or ways to help me be a better manager. While some of these came from scheduled seminars, most of the best ideas came from informal, off-line conversation with the distributor and supplier executives. That’s where you really learn how to grow your profitability. I’m proud to say that I developed life-long friendships with many of the great people in our industry.

Come to our meeting in Las Vegas and begin to build your own network of industry friends. You have no idea where those relationships will take you.

ProductionToolSupply joined NetPlus Alliance on February 1st as a wholesale

supplier of cutting tools, shop equipment, and related supplies. With over 235,000 metalworking tools and machinery items featuring over 900 brands, such as Iscar, OSG Tap & Die, Norton, and M.A. Ford, Production Tool Supply offers distributors a competitive source for all their customers’ metalworking applications. Production Tool Supply has distribution centers in Michigan, Texas, and Los Angeles to serve NetPlus distributors nationwide. A customized Drop Ship program lets the distributor maintain its identity by printing your company’s name on all shipping labels and packing slips. In addition to a strong product offering, the company makes it easy to place orders. Online distributor services, www.ptsxpress.com, provide real-time pricing and product availability along with the ability to track shipments. Its private label catalog program, quarterly sale flyers, and integrated webxpress private label website help independent distributors compete with big nationals.

Wireless Solutions (WSI) is your authorized Motorola distributor (MDD) in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Delaware, Eastern Tennessee (except Memphis and area code 901), and Puerto Rico. NetPlus Alliance currently has programs in place with 3 other MDDs: AxcessTechnologySource,MarketingEastIndustries, and ProMarketing. I am continuing to work on adding the remaining Motorola MDDs across the United States to support all of the NetPlus distributor members. These MDDs are the exclusive source for distributors to purchase two-way

business radios and accessories for resale to end users for industrial applications. I’m sure everyone has customers that use two-way radios to communicate on jobsites or in plants. WSI actively works with its distributor/reseller partners to help grow two-way radio sales. It offers focused product promotions and special pricing for NetPlus members.

PrecisionInstrumentsis a USA-based manufacturer of precision torque tools. Incorporated in 1938, Precision Instruments has been a leader in torque tool technology and holds several industry patents. Its product offering includes dial type wrenches, spit beam click wrenches, micrometer click type wrenches, torque drivers, and multiplier indicators. This broad offering is available to NetPlus members through a program that includes an incredibly low minimum order, special pricing, and prepaid freight terms. For many years, Precision Instruments has been manufacturing torque tools for some of the best-known hand tool brands in the world.

AccuformSigns, a 40 year old family-owned company, offers a wide variety of products and services, including labeling and label systems, lockout-tagout products, facility and worksite safety products, and motivation and safety awareness displays. This USA-based manufacturer has evolved to offer over 100,000 items providing visual communications solutions for every industry. Its website is an excellent resource for valuable information related to safety awareness, accident prevention, and pertinent government regulations. Accuform Signs offers NetPlus members special incentives, including best pricing discounts, an online order discount, and introductory lower prepaid freight terms.

More details about these new suppliers, as well as more information about our complete lineup of supplier partners, can be found on their individual program pages in the NetPlus Member Portal. If you have any suggestions for new supplier partners, please contact me at [email protected].

Is your business delivering the results you expect?

There are plenty of

articles offering advice on how to solve the issues many businesses face today. The issues include unhappy and non-returning customers, employee retention and lack of loyalty, difficulty hiring good and promotable people, and under-achieving results. While these issues aren’t necessarily new, they appear to be more prevalent today than in the past. People, both customers and employees, appear to feel they have other options in today’s fast-paced environment.

Agrowingnumberofcompanieshavefoundsuccessinovercomingtheserecurringissuesbydefiningtheircultureandhiringemployeesthatfitthatculture. Culture should be simple and clearly define a set of core values that outline the guiding principles for the success of the company. It is the personality of the organization. The core values might include subjects, such as your mission, values, ethics, expectations, goals, environment, and language that will inspire your organization to achieve success.

Think back to a person or company that delivered a feeling of total satisfaction. You may have felt excitement from the employee that provided it, and it may have made you think they enjoyed and were really good at what they do. Chances are good that your experience was not an accident or a one-time event. Most likely, the employee knew what was expected, had the ability, desire, and freedom to deliver what was needed, and felt good about delivering it.

If you haven’t defined the culture of your organization, build a list with your employees of the things that define what, why, and how you are successful, along with what might

be needed to reach the results you expect. Collect all suggestions and then reduce to a manageable number of statements truly defining the values needed for success. Typically, the core values will be a list of less than ten items. It is important to have the team help assemble and reduce the list, so everyone is a part of it and additionally because often employees are closer to the process.

Thesevaluesneedtoapplytoeveryoneintheorganization. As an example, you might decide to wow your customers at every level. So purchasing should buy products that wow, and sales, customer service, delivery, and invoicing should each create the same wow experience. If your employees know they should look for opportunities to wow your customers all the way through the process, they will be excited to accomplish that and feel good about doing it. From my experience, happy people typically deliver a better product.

Once you have defined your culture, there are some employees that will fit perfectly, and others that may not. If they don’t believe in what you do and how you do it, they might be better off in another position. The employees that fit the culture will be happy to deliver the culture and may have friends that would be happy to work in this exciting culture that you have created. Remember to be sure that new employees fit the culture during the hiring process. Nowyouhaveasetofcorevaluesthatprovidesaroadmaptopeoplethatfityourculture.

There is plenty of information about culture and core values available, but better yet, speaking at the 2015 NetPlus Alliance Annual Meeting is special guest and culture evangelist Jon Wolske, part of the Zappos family of companies. If you not familiar with Zappos, it is quite an impressive story, and they credit a large portion of their success to their culture. If you have any comments or questions about company culture, core values, or the NetPlus Annual Meeting, please contact me at [email protected].

Sycamore has launched its all new Big Wipes 4x4 range of industrial strength wipes, containing no fewer than four powerful cleaning agents and four dermatologically testedskin conditioners, making Big Wipes 4x4 cleaning wipes even tougher on grime and even kinder to your hands.

The truth is that everyone in the trade gets their hands dirty and most of the filth simply doesn’t come off with soap and water. The unique benefit of Big Wipes 4x4 is their ability to remove all modern construction sealants, adhesives, paints, coatings and grime in an instant. As they are completely portable, they can be kept close to hand to remove this muck before it gets a chance to fully cure.

In order to look after the skin, the formula contains four of the world’s greatest skin conditioners: Aloe Vera, Lanolin, Vitamin E and Glycerin – all helping to nourish and protect the skin. Furthermore the wipes show zero levels of irritation recorded during controlled testing by dermatologists.

Not only has the formula been upgraded, the bigger, thicker and tougher fabrics have been too:

RedTop: Heavy Duty - Textured and dual-sided, the scrub face of the wipe removes even the most stubborn grime, while the smooth face absorbs any excess.

BlackTop: Multi Purpose - Power fabric, now a striking yellow color, a leading combination of toughness and absorbency.

GreenTop: Multi Surface – Super absorbent biodegradable wipe ideally suited for applications involving the removal of non-hazardous substances for disposal with normal waste.

Big Wipes not only invests in a great product but in helping you sell as well. We provide your sales team with sales kits which include individual wipe samples and informative postcards for quick and efficient promotion of the wipes, ideal for your sales team in the field. In addition, products can be provided in a pre-stacked floor display or compact counter display designed to grab the attention of any customer and clearly communicate the key product features & benefits. The units will instantly add a big splash of color and are then easily at hand to recommend to all customers and especially those buying paints, sealants, adhesives, lubricants and more.

For more information about Big Wipes visit www.bigwipesusa.com or see Big Wipes in action on YouTube (www.youtube.com/user/bigwipes).
