Roof Deck
Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) roofing consists of an application of specifically designed foam covered with an elastomeric coating to protect the foam from ultraviolet rays.
Specialized equipment mixes two liquid components at the spray gun that applies the SPF to a prepared substrate. The mixed liquid expands many times its original volume in a matter of seconds, forming a rigid foam plastic that chemically bonds to the surface to which it is sprayed.
SPF has a closed cell structure that makes it water resistant. It must, however, be protected by elastomeric coatings to prevent ultra-violet-induced surface degradation.
Since SPF adds little weight (60# per 100 sq.ft.) to existing roof coverings and can build slope to fill in low areas, these systems are used frequently as a retrofit roofing system.

TAX ADVANTAGESFOR DIRECT BOND ROOF SYSTEMS
According to Sec. 1.162-4 Repairs of IRS Tax Code:
Roof maintenance systems are fully tax deductable as an operating expense. One of the key advantages of a restoration system over a new roof system is in how it is classified by the IRS. Restoration is classified as a maintenance, and in most cases it can be expensed in the accounting period it is incurred. On the other hand a new roof system is a capital asset that must be amortized over a 39 year life.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
A division of the Jones-Blair Corporation
Why are Cool Roofs Cool?....................
Simple Science – dark materials absorb more heat than light materials
Most “Traditional” dark-colored roofs absorb 70% or more of the solar energy striking them – resulting in peak roof temperatures of 150* to 190* F.
By comparison – a white, reflective cool roof will be 50* to 60*F cooler on hot days.
The resulting reduction of heat transfer into the air-conditioned spaces can
decrease cooling costs by 20% or more.
ENERGY STAR®
Reflectivity• Solar Reflectance of a Roof is defined as
the percentage of solar energy Reflected by the roof’s surface.
ENERGY STAR® Reflectance Requirements:
65% Initial 50% Aged (+3 years – actual)

LEED
Emittance of a Roof is the Percent of Solar Energy Radiated from the Material (how much of the absorbed heat energy is released from the material)
LEED Combines ENERGY STAR® Reflectance Requirements with at least 90% Emittance

Environmental “Green” Advantages of Sustainable Roofing Systems
• Dade County approved; FM Global; UL rated; Cool Roof rated• Products are LEED qualified• Low odor, one-part urethane membrane (toughest, most durable fluid-applied
membrane on the market)• Helps keep your building cooler (lower energy expense)• Sustainable and Renewable roof system• Bio-Preferred Roofing Systems (36% Bio Content)
USDA website: www.biopreferred.gov
Is Foam “Green” & Why?• Spray foam insulation has significant impact on reducing the need for fossil fuels
through energy savings• SPF is environmentally friendly by containing no ozone depleting blowing
agents, no CFCs, HCFC, asbestos, formaldehyde and no glass fibers• High performance, low maintenance and easily restored to initial performance
levels• Can be applied directly to existing substrate in 95% of retrofit situations,
diverting waste from landfill.
And one of the biggest benefits of a Sustainable Roof System….
The vast majority of the time, NO TEAR-OFF and LANDFILL COSTS
Nine to 10 million tons of asphalt roofing waste are sent to American landfill sites every year. Every 10,000 square-foot roof tear-off creates an estimated 270 cubic feet of waste and application. The price tag for this disposal amounts to over $400 million.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
“Extending the life of an existing roof from 15 to 30 years would reduce the volume ofre-roofing debris by a total of 160 million cubic feet (40% of current roofing waste) and 1.6% of the total solid waste landfilled each year.”
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
