NMIT’s Nelson Campus is situated just minutes walk from Nelson’s vibrant city centre. It is the larger of two main campuses, with approximately 3,000 students on campus at any one time. The Nelson Campus features new apartment style student accommodation, a library learning centre, hair and beauty salons, a training gym for staff and students and a student cafe offering great coffee.

Marlborough RegionMarlborough is located close to the heart of New Zealand, on the north east corner of the South Island, due west of Wellington city.Marlborough is synonymous internationally for its distinctive, herbaceous Sauvignon blanc wine. It is New Zealand’s largest winemaking region with around 166 wineries and 460 grape growers and over 22,000 hectares planted in grapes.

Marlborough is also known for its idyllic Sounds - sunken valleys which create a network of tranquil clear waterways amidst regenerating and virgin native forests.The Sounds are home to treasured bird and sealife - terns, shags, herons, blue penguins, dolphins, seals and native forest birds, all easily viewed by private boat or charter tour.

The renowned 71km Queen Charlotte Track, a 3-4 day walk, curls around coves, inlets and along skyline ridges between the breathtaking Kenepuru and Queen Charlotte Sounds. The commercial hub of Marlborough (population 46,000) is Blenheim.

Marlborough Campus

Specialising in viticulture and aviation, NMIT’s Marlborough campus is the smaller of the Institute’s two main campuses with approximately 200 equivalent full time students. Situated about 20 minutes’ walk from Blenheim city centre, the attractive campus boasts an onsite winery, vineyard, hair salon, beauty salon, library and student café.

Also onsite is the Marlborough Wine Research Centre which features a state of the art winery, laboratories, a technology transfer centre and sensory wine tasting room.

Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Base Woodbourne

NMIT’s aircraft maintenance engineering students train at RNZAF Base Woodbourne where the School of Aviation is based. Here they receive hands-on training with real aircraft and can take advantage of the excellent facilities on base, including accommodation. The base is situated about ten minutes’ drive from Blenheim.

Adventure TourismStudying ADveNTuRe TOuRISM is a great way for international students to experience New Zealand’s beautiful wilderness while gaining qualifications. There are three

diverse national parks – Abel Tasman, Nelson lakes and kahurangi close by. Students may select certificate or diploma options and specialise in hiking, rafting, river kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, sea kayaking or snowboarding.

NMIT’s AIRCRAFT MAINTeNANCe eNGINeeRING students study at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Base in Woodbourne, about 10 minutes’ drive

from Blenheim in the Marlborough region. During this challenging two-year diploma, students receive practical training on real aircraft.

English Language Programmes

English LanguageNMIT’s English Language Centre offers quality academic programmes that prepare students for their next step – into further study or for professional development. Experienced tutors guide individuals through their learning journey, taking into consideration each learner’s own learning needs and goals, in order to give regular constructive feedback and offer advice and resources for personal study.

Programmes of StudyOur English Language Programmes are designed to allow students to focus on the skills they need most. Learners study either full time (21 hours per week) or part time (15 hours per week).

Certificate in English as an Additional Language (Level 3) Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate

Learn foundation English skills for daily life and for further English study in a supportive environment. Core language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed using engaging resources, tasks and activities. Our tutors will show you strategies for learning language so you can study more independently and make progress quickly.

Learners also develop other important skills like using computers and online learning material, how to work effectively in a group, how to make presentations, how to make the most of the local community and how to use the internet for English study.

Certificate in Tertiary Study (CTS) (Level 4) (English Language and Pathways) Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate Levels

These programmes are for anyone who wants to increase their English skills, study skills and cultural understanding so you can study successfully at Certificate, Diploma or Degree level in an english speaking country. It is also the right course for people who want to gain skills to help them live and work in New Zealand.

Graduates of these programmes will have the English skills necessary to move on to Certificate, Diploma or Degree level study at NMIT or to apply to another Polytechnic or university.

Individually tailored courses let you focus on the skills you need to learn for your future, whether you want to study Nursing, Engineering, Social Sciences, Business, Art or IT, or to get a better job in New Zealand.

English study (8 – 20 hours per week)

Academic English, Business English or General English courses will give you the English skills you need. Study interesting topics about world issues and learn to express yourself and your opinions clearly and confidently. Develop a portfolio of work around the topics or subjects that matter to you and learn skills and strategies you need to work or study in an English speaking environment.

Prepare for an internationally recognised exam, like IELTS, Cambridge FCE or Cambridge BEC Vantage. NMIT is an accredited Cambridge ESOL examination centre, one of only three in New Zealand. IELTS exams take place at NMIT three times each year.

Pathways courses (4 hours per week, choose one, two or three)

Self Study All Levels

NMIT has a well-equipped self study lab with a tutor to help you find useful materials and answer your questions. Special English Language learning computer programmes allow you to practice vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, spelling, writing and pronunciation in an interesting and stimulating way.

Native speaker sessions allow you to practice your conversation skills with Kiwis about topics of your choice. You can also improve general study skills such as touch typing, note taking and academic referencing.

Our self study centre also has a digital language laboratory for use in class but also for self study. You can use the lab for a range of activities that help your speaking, listening and writing.

Group CoursesNMIT is able to offer tailor-made English courses for groups with a minimum of 15 students. These can include English and group activity programmes; English for Nursing or even the Teaching Knowledge Test – a 4 to 6 week course for anyone who wants to take a step into a career teaching English as a Foreign Language. These courses are for domestic and international students who have at least IELTS 5.5. Students study English plus additional practical courses that will help students enter into the workplace or higher education.

Helpful Advice

Helpful AdviceBefore you get to New Zealand, there are some important things you need to know about life in New Zealand and things to do in order to gain entry to New Zealand.

ClimateNelson and Blenheim consistently have the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. However this doesn’t mean the weather is always perfect. Students should prepare for wind, rain and cold weather, particularly in the winter, as well as sunny, warm days.

Homes in New Zealand are often not well insulated against the cold and we suggest students are prepared for this. Students should not buy all their winter clothing at home if from a tropical climate. It will not be warm enough and might not suit your needs in Nelson. It is possible to buy very cheap and warm winter clothing in second hand shops, if you do not want to buy new clothes.

Payment of Fees and ChargesA completed “Confirmation of Acceptance” form received by NMIT is a contract from a student to pay the enrolment fees and charges due for the stated length of the study contract.Enrolment fees and charges must be paid in full before the start date of the programme, or by any earlier date as specified for particular programmes.Fees not paid by the due date may incur a Late Payment Charge.An approved combination of English Language study and mainstream programmes will be deemed as ‘one programme’.No student shall be enrolled unless all approved fees and charges have been paid to Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.Where payment is unable to be made in New Zealand dollars, uS dollars will be accepted. Bank drafts or telegraphic transfers should be to the credit of Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and the student’s name should be entered on the document and quoted by the remitting bank.The total amount paid to NMIT must include any bank fees.The Institute’s bank is the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson branch, account number 02 704 0190770 003.

All applications should be in writing to the Information and Enrolment Centre Manager, with any supporting documentation stipulated by the Information and Enrolment Centre Manager.Application for a refund in “exceptional circumstances” should be in writing to the Head of School.

International Students who obtain Permanent Resident Status

An international student who gains New Zealand permanent residency during the course of their study must pay international fees for the two years following from the date which permanent residency was granted. If the two year period is completed (and full residency is granted) after enrolling and establishing a study contract with NMIT, the student will not be eligible for a refund for that study contract. After permanent residency has been gained, the fees and charges applicable to domestic students will apply for any further study contracts.

Payment of Refunds

Refunds will be in New Zealand dollars minus any bank fees and may be paid by cheque or bank draft to:

> The student’s registered home address in their country of origin; OR> The agent who referred the student; OR> Another New Zealand education institution; OR> The student’s bank account in New Zealand; OR> The student

The Internship Charge will be refunded, less bank fees and a NZ$350 administration charge, if the student decides not to continue with the internship after NMIT have received the ‘confirmation of acceptance’ form from the student, and up to three weeks before the internship is scheduled to begin.

After three weeks before the start of the internship, there will be no refund.

The Transfer Charge applies to students approved to transfer to another programme.

A transfer from one programme (including the english language Programme) to another programme that the student wishes to transfer to. A transfer to another programme will not be considered after two weeks from programme commencement except in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Head of School.

There is no charge to students who are approved by the Head of School to change courses within the same programme.

How to ApplyMake your decision and apply• Complete the International Student Application Form with your

personal details, what course you want to study, and your academic records including your level of english (if applicable). (NZ$150 non-refundable application fee charge applies)

• Complete the International Student Accommodation Form if you need assistance with your accommodation arrangements (NZ$150 non-refundable accommodation placement charge applies)

• You can apply online at www.nmit.ac.nz or use the inserted application form and send it to us by post or fax (or a scanned copy by email)

• You must include (pay) the application charge of NZ$150 when you send us your completed application form. your application cannot be processed without this payment

• You can also forward your application form and other official documents through one of our approved agents. Please contact us by email for details of our agents in your country: [email protected]

• We cannot process your enrolment application without the documents requested in the enrolment application form. Please ensure that these are included with your application

NMIT will notify you regarding our decision on your applicationIf NMIT accepts your application, we will send you the following Acceptance Documents:

Formally accept the offerFormally accept our offer by returning a signed Acceptance Form and pay the fees outlined in the Notification of Fees and Charges. Payment may be made by bank draft, cheque, telegraphic transfer or credit card. NMIT will issue a receipt and confirmed offerAfter we receive your payment we will then send you:> Receipt> Confirmed Offer of Place> Copy of Refund PolicyYou will need to supply these documents together with the Guarantee of Accommodation to New Zealand Immigration if you are applying for a student visa.

Apply for a visa (if applicable)You should now be ready to apply for your student visa, using the forms available from your local New Zealand Embassy, High Commission, your agent, or the New Zealand Immigration Service (www. immigration.govt.nz). Be sure to allow enough time to complete this procedure (it can take up to three months). Allow also enough time to organise your travel to New Zealand and please inform us about your travel arrangements.

We recommend that you apply and enrol early, as places can fill quickly in many programmes. Late applications may be considered if there are places available on the programme. We can help you at any stage of this process. If you have any questions, please contact us at any time.
