    Woman brainwashed into

    staying at guerrilla camp,

    lawyer says

    Bid to overturn refugee

    board decision

    Stewart Bell

    National Post, Canada

    Friday, November 09, 2007

    TORONTO - A lawyer ac-

    cused a Middle Eastern guer-

    rilla group yesterday of lur-

    ing a teenaged Toronto girl

    to a paramilitary camp in

    Iraq and brainwashing her

    into staying.

    Pamila Bhardwaj told a Fed-

eral Court judge thatSomayeh Mohammady had

    effectively been kidnapped

    by the Mujahedin-e Khalq,

or MEK, a rebel group based

    in Iraq.

    The lawyer made the accusa-

tion at a court hearing that

    could ultimately decide

    whether Ms. Mohammady

will be allowed to return to

    Canada after a decade with

    the guerrillas.

    The MEK, a designated ter-

    rorist organization under Ca-

nadian law, says it aims to

    use "physical force, armed

    struggle or jihad" to over-

    throw Iran's repressive gov-

    ernment, according to Ot-

    tawa.

In the 1990s, the MEK was

    recruiting within Canada's

    Iranian community and Ms.

Mohammady, a refugee fromIran, volunteered with the

    blessing of her parents, both

    MEK activists.

In 1997, at the age of 17, she

    travelled to Camp Ashraf,

the MEK guerrilla base northof Baghdad from which it

    launched its attacks on Iran.

    She has been there ever

    since.

While she was away, the rest

    of the family became Cana-

dian citizens. But Ms.Mohammady's landed immi-

    grant status expired because

she was not residing in Can-

    ada as required by law.

    The MEK base was disarmed

    after the U.S. military in-

vaded Iraq in 2003, but hun-

    dreds of guerrillas remain at

    the camp, including Ms.

    Mohammady.

    Mustafa Mohammady, her

    father, has made several trips

to Iraq hoping to bring her

    back to Canada, but Cana-

dian officials will not let herreturn because she no longer

    has immigration status here.

    The family challenged that

    decision at the Immigration

    and Refugee Board last year

    but Ms. Mohammady torpe-

doed her own case when shetestified by phone from Iraq

that she did not want to re-

turn to Canada. "I would like

Woman brainwashed into staying at guerrilla camp

    to be here," she said,

    "because I'm Mujahedin my-

self and I want to be here."

    Her family believes she has

    been brainwashed or is afraid

to speak her mind, and Ms.

    Bhardwaj said human rights

    groups have reported that

"defectors" who try to leavethe camp are routinely

    beaten and detained. "She's

    under mind control of the

    MEK," Mr. Bhardwaj said.

    Ms. Bhardwaj told the court

    yesterday the refugee board's

ruling should be overturned because it did not take that

into account, nor did it con-

    sider that Ms. Mohammady

was a minor when she wasrecruited into the MEK.

    "This decision simply cannot

    stand," she said.

    But Martin Anderson, the

    lawyer representing the gov-

    ernment in the case, said

    there was insufficient evi-

    dence Ms. Mohammady had

    been subjected to psycho-

    logical pressure. "That may

be, but there's not enoughevidence before the panel to

    establish that."

    He also said that even

    though she was a minor

    when she first left Canada

    for the paramilitary camp,

she had turned 18 in 1998.

    "After that time, she's an

    adult," Mr. Anderson said.

At the end of Octobera symposium was heldin the French NationalAssembly, attended bya few second rate per-sons from the world ofFrance and politicswhich brought nothingnew to confront the

    Iranian threat.

More interesting is theguest of honour: Ray-mond Tanter.

Interesting first in hiscapacity as a professorat Georgetown Univer-sity in the USA and as

    a former member ofthe National SecurityCouncil at the WhiteHouse. But also be-cause it is a strikingexample of an ambigu-ous relationship be-tween a part of Ameri-can political circles andce r ta i n t e r ro r i s t

Indeed, Tanter cur-rently chairs the IranPolicy Committee (IPC)which performs lobby-ing for the Mojahedin-e Khalq (aka PMOI,MEK, MKO, NCRI,etc.), recognized as aterrorist organizationby both the European

    Union and the USA.

But what is interestingis how Tanter has beenunder the control ofthe Mojahedin. At one

point his wife, Con-stance Anderson-Tanter, accused thePeople's Mujahideen ofbeing responsible forthe separation of thecouple.

In several testimoniesshe clearly accuses the

Members of Parliament inBritain got to hear whattraditional Republican Partymembers really think aboutthe US Administration'sneoconservative approachtoward Iran yesterday.

Professor Paul SheldonFoote on a short visit from

the title 'USDivision ofForeign PolicyTowards Iran'.

    The talk high-lighted the

Farah Karimi / talking toSoheila Vahdati

Farah Karimi made a trip to

the US in Aug 2007. In her

    short visit to the Northern

    California, I found an oppor-

tunity to sit and talk with her

    and raise some questions

    regarding her private life,

    immigrating from Iran, the

    experience of being a deputy

    in Dutch Parliament, and

her other international ac-tivities. Following is the out-

    come of our talks. While

    thanking Farah Karimi and

    wishing her every success, I

present you the text of her

    sayings.

The chronicle of my life and

struggle in Iran and in the

    Netherlands has been pub-

lished in a book called "themystery of fire" which has

    been translated into Spanish,

but it has not been translated

    into Persian or English. I

    have written some details

about my life in this book.

    For instance, I have de-

    scribed about my political

    activities in length and even

    about how individuals are

    recruited into radical politi-

    cal movements. Here I point

    out some of the incidentsbriefly.

    I was born in November

1960 in the village of Has-

    san-Abad of Garus in the

    province of Kurdistan. When

I reached the age to startschool we immigrated to Te-

hran and so I was raised in

    Tehran.

    In October 1979, I entered

the Technical University ofEsfahan, but like most peo-

ple of my age on those days I

    got involved in revolutionary

    activities. Some time later,

    while the "cultural revolu-

    tion" began (in the universi-

    ties), I returned to Tehran.

Political activitiesAfter the revolution of 1979,

I was first working with theShariati Centre. In 1981 I

was arrested and after aweek on the verge of 20th of

    June incident I was realised.

    After the 20th of June

    ( d e m o n s t r a t i o n s a n d

    clashes), the suppression and

    executions escalated.

    Amongst the first group of

    people being executed after

the 20th of June there was a

leftist fellow from our uni-versity who was arrested

    some time before that and

    then executed. These inci-

    dents motivated me to be-

    come more radical and join

    the Mojahedin-e Khalq Or-

    ganisation (MKO). I married

a supporter of the MKO in

    January 1982. My husband

"Iran for me is the foreign policy"

and I formed a team house,

but I did not have any mili-

tary activities since I had be-gun supporting the MKO

    recently.

Life in KurdistanWith the number of arrests

    and executions arising, we

    had to leave Tehran. Many

    of my friends were executed

    at that time. After leaving

    Tehran, we moved to Kurdi-

stan, and we lived there forfive months including the

winter time. I was then preg-

nant and my boy was born in

one of the villages of Kurdi-

    stan. Afterwards we moved

    into Iraq through the Sar-

    dasht boarder and we stayed

there for 24 hours and thenwe moved to Istanbul and

lived there in a very harsh

    condition. I personally had

problems with the MKO whowere badly treating their own

    members and using them in

    espionage activities against

    the people inside the organi-

sation and also using them as

a tool. They tried to destroy

    the relationship between the

couples. I was then a young

    woman and I was passing

    my pregnancy period and

surely my relationship withmy husband had some ef-

fects on me. I had many

    criticisms against the organi-

sation and they thought I did

    not have enough motivations

    for the struggle.

    could see that the

organisation, whichI would call it a

    "monster" would

    take everything ever

    a person's child. I

    could not see my

    son inside the or-

    ganisation and it

looked if though hewas a property be-

    longing to the or-

    ganisation and did

not have anything todo with me. These

    harsh Stalinist ways

    of personality terror-

    ism which were very

    hard became impos-

    sible to be tolerated.

    From the year 1986,

    I moved back to

    Germany. My hus-

    band who loved me

    very much moved

    back to me to Ger-

    many. But the or-

    ganisation imposed

    pressure on him so

    he was made to go

    to Iraq and stayed

    there for one year

    while swinging rig-

    orously between the

organisation and hisfamily i.e. my son

and me. But nothingwas left between us

so we were likestrangers to each

    other, therefore we

    eventually got sepa-

    rated.

    us to move out of

the country. Butthey left us alone in

    Turkey and there-

    fore we had a very

    hard time there. We

    managed to go to

    Germany from there

    with many difficul-

    ties. We weregranted political

    asylum in Germany

    and once again we

had house and facili-ties. The MKO

    found us again and

    once more we were

    recruited in and our

    house became a cen-

    tre for the MKO's

    activities. Others

    kept going to the

    MKO's headquarters

    in Paris and we be-

    came active too. Af-

    ter the marriage ofMassoud Rajavi

    with Maryam Azo-

    danlou, or as it is

    c a l l e d t h e

    "ideological revolu-

tion" we moved toFrance and lived

    there for one year.

    After that I could

not tolerate the ruin-ing system of crash-

    ing human beings

    personalities and it

    was ever so disturb-

    ing to me. On one

    hand I had motive to

    work due to the

    situation in Iran, and

    on the other hand I

    Immigration to

the NetherlandIn 1989, I got mar-ried to my present

    husband and after

    some time I immi-

    grated to the Nether-

    lands with my fam-

    ily and I started a

    new life there.

    When I started my

    life in the Nether-

    lands I was totally

    disappointed withthe political affairs

    inside Iran. The in-

    ternal situation ofIran looked gloomy.

    My sister was killed

    in 1988 in the

    MKO's attack into

    Iran in an operation

    called the "eternal

    light". I had seen

    MKO closely and I

    knew that this or-

    ganisation cannot be

    a political alterna-

    tive. Both the Ira-

    nian regime and the

    MKO were acting so

    inhuman that I did

    not want to do any-

    thing to do with

    Iran.

    litical scene of the
