About the calendar Midlothian Council’s Community Planning Partnership (CPP) asked and supported each of Midlothian’s sixteen Community Council areas to produce an action plan to bring together local residents with partner agencies to identify and find solutions to local issues. Rosewell Neighbourhood Group (RNG) chose to produce its plan in a calendar format with an easy to read summary of the findings, creating a document that would be of use to every home in the community and providing a comprehensive resource to refer to throughout the year. Over the 5 year period of the action plan calendars, they have been hand delivered to every home and business in the Rosewell district area by the members of RNG, with help from other community groups.

What has been achieved over the last 5 years Out of the original action points most have seen an improvement with many having been completed. Some will always be ongoing as there will always be room for improvement with dog fouling, safer roads and buses etc.

Rosewell Neighbourhood Group (RNG) RNG are a group of local residents, who have worked together with Rosewell & District Community Council to fundraise to enable the the calendars to be produced. We would like to acknowledge and give our thanks to everyone who has been involved in funding, producing and delivering calendars over the past 5 years Our thanks also to everyone involved in helping us achieve the installation of our community accessible defibrillator. We have only been able to produce the calendar with the support of our very kind donators. All those who have supported and given donations are mentioned in the dedicated page in the calendar, It’s been a great way to get your name out there, especially with all the new home owners coming to Rosewell. Future of the Calendar Due to the success of the calendar, Rosewell & District Community Council (RDCC) aim to continue producing the calendar and it will be known as The Rosewell Calendar. For further details please contact [email protected]

Social Media Rosewell Neighbourhood Group Facebook page was created in January 2018 and has over 750 members. This will now be moderated by RDCC. It remains a community neighbourhood page to share local information. Advertising will remain limited to supporters of our projects, however members can share recommendations good or bad. Please join our page to keep up to date and share ‘what’s happening’ in and around Rosewell. So far, we have helped find lost dogs, reunited lost property, responded to recommendations, highlighted road closures, power cuts, bins on fire, recognized and thanked local heroes for community gestures.

Rosewell Crime Statistics The Community Police officers attend Community Council meetings and provide monthly updates on crimes reported within the district of Rosewell. Although most crimes are reported within the village, there are some more rural crimes still within the boundary of Rosewell. From August 2018 until the calendar went to print, we have collated the information to show crimes reported, crimes solved and road traffic accidents (RTA)

.

Motorbikes Motorbikes racing around fields, country paths and woods can be a nuisance to residents as well as livestock. Damage to paths and woodlands can be extensive. Police may not always catch them in the act but reporting them with details of helmets / clothing / colour of bike can lead to identifying culprits at a later stage. Additionally, if you are a motorbike owner take precautions to prevent theft by having it stored in a shed or garage if possible, have the motorbike alarmed, and padlocked at all times when not in use.

Lambing A dog’s instinct is to chase, even if they are usually obedient and good with other animals. Being chased by dogs can do serious damage to sheep, even if the dog doesn’t catch them. The stress of worrying by dogs can cause sheep to die and pregnant ewes to miscarry their lambs.

Lambing is around spring time but can start earlier in the year. Keep out of fields with sheep during lambing and have your dog on a lead.

Horses Do not feed horses in a field without the owner’s permission as this could lead to a horrifying experience for the owner and horse if the horse is under medical treatment. If you are walking by a horse field keep your dogs on leads and under control to help prevent accidents. Recent thefts of horse electric fencing and equine equipment around Midlothian have left horses in danger and owners being stressed and out of pocket. Please report any suspicious activity to police. Fields and Crops At harvest time, after baling hay and straw, people are tempted to walk through the fields. If doing so with their dogs, please clean up any mess left behind. Be careful with cigarettes as fire has an effect on not only the farmer, but the fire services and any customers of the farmer. Hare Coursing Intentionally or recklessly allowing dogs to kill a wild hare is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act”, Police urge anyone who witness this crime, or simply, if you are a farmer or landowner and you'd like to report any suspicious activity or people on your land - particularly suspicious people with dogs such as lurchers or greyhounds - please contact police on 101. Community Police Officers can be contacted by email: [email protected] Police Scotland use social media to circulate the latest news, events and information to the public via: Twitter@LothBordPolice and @MidLothPolice and Facebook: www.facebook.com/MidlothianPolice www,facebook.com/LothiansScottishBordersPoliceDivision

Doorstep Crime Thieves operate in the countryside as well as villages and cities. Thieves will steal almost anything and the more you protect your valuables the more chance of you not being another statistic. Make it hard for criminals by marking your property, using locks and not leaving valuables visible. Doorstep crime is on the rise with bogus callers, rogue traders and scammers.

Scottish Outdoor Access Code Scotland’s outdoors provides great opportunities for open-air recreation and education, with great benefits for people’s enjoyment, health and well-being. The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 ensures everyone has statutory access rights to most of Scotland’s outdoors, if these rights are exercised responsibly, with respect for people’s privacy, safety and livelihoods, and for Scotland’s environment. Equally, land managers have to manage their land and water responsibly in relation to access rights.

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code provides detailed guidance on these responsibilities. The Code provides a practical guide to help everyone make informed decisions about what is best to do in everyday situations, and provides the starting point for short best practice guides and more detailed advice about land and inland water.

Principles – the Code is based on three key principles:

1 Respect the interests of other people

Acting with courtesy, consideration and awareness is very important. If you are exercising access rights, make sure that you respect the privacy, safety and livelihoods of those living or working in the outdoors, and the needs of other people enjoying the outdoors. If you are a land manager, respect people’s use of the outdoors and their need for a safe and enjoyable visit.

2 Care for the environment If you are exercising access rights, look after the places you visit and enjoy, and leave the land as you find it. If you are a land manager, help maintain the natural and cultural features which make the outdoors attractive to visit and enjoy.

3 Take responsibility for your own actions If you are exercising access rights, remember that the outdoors cannot be made risk-free and act with care at all times for your own safety and that of others. If you are a land manager, act with care at all times for people’s safety.

Your access rights responsibilities ▪ Take responsibility for your own actions - eg care for

your own safety, keep alert for hazards, take special care with children.

▪ Respect people's privacy and peace of mind - eg. do not act in ways that might annoy or alarm people, especially at night.

▪ Help land managers and others to work safely and effectively - eg keep clear of land management operations like harvesting or tree-felling, avoid damaging crops, leave gates as you find them.

▪ Care for your environment - eg. don't disturb wildlife, take your litter away with you.

▪ Keep your dog under proper control - dogs are popular companions, but take special care if near livestock, or during the bird breeding season, and always pick up after your dog.

▪ Take extra care if you are organising an event or running a business - eg talk to the managers of any land which you may plan to use intensively or regularly.

Land owner’s responsibilities

As an owner or manager of land or water in Scotland, you must manage that land in a way which is responsible in respect of the public's statutory access rights.

▪ Respect access rights in manageing land and water - eg by not ▪ hindering or deterring people, and taking access into account when

planning management tasks.

▪ Act reasonably when asking people to avoid land management operations - eg. by keeping any precautions to the minimum area and duration required for people's safety

▪ Work with the local authority and other bodies to help integrate access and land management - eg show that people are welcome, work with the access officer to help manage access positively

Dog Fouling The Green Dog Walkers (GDW) scheme is a community led initiative to help reduce dog fouling in Midlothian. All individual members pledge to be responsible and to advertise their membership with a special armband, lead or collar. Membership also encourages pet owners to carry extra doggie bags to help those dog owners who may get caught short. Pet owners can also obtain poop-scoop bags from their local library or other council offices.

Poo Dunnit – Number 2 Following a poll on Facebook, residents were asked for help choosing areas to target for another dog poo campaign – results in the following chart.

Rosewell Development Trust (RDT) Established in 2010, Rosewell Development Trust provides, activities, facilities and services, which all of our residents can benefit from and enjoy. The Trust aims to help build a resilient, integrated and safe community for all. We achieve this through responding to the social, economic, cultural and recreational needs of Rosewell.

Community Engagement Projects RDT run a number of long-term projects, which include: • Woodland classroom • Employment support • Children’s groups • Lunch Club • History Group • Baby and Toddler Group • Family fun day • Community Litter Picks • Kid World Citizen Group • Rosewell in Bloom • Computer Club • Volunteering • Apprenticeships

RDT are in the process of building the new Rosewell Community Hub, which will be called The Steading, Rosewell. This new facility as well as being a terrific space for everyone in Rosewell, will allow RDT to, create new opportunities for people to flourish, reduce inequalities, improve personal wellbeing, increase educational attainment, create more social events in the village and develop a strong sense of community spirit.

RDT Volunteers Volunteering is at the heart of what we do and without all of our dedicated volunteers, we simply would not be able to achieve the work we carry out. We create many opportunities to volunteer with RDT, including:

• Volunteer Classroom Assistants • Children’s Work Volunteers • Gardening Volunteers • Events Volunteers • Lunch Club Volunteers

Woodland Classroom RDT’s Woodland Classroom is enjoyed by all. Situated in Thornton wood, our woodland classroom is already used by schools and groups such as Alzheimer Scotland. The woodland classroom is available for use by local groups free of charge and other groups for a small donation.

For details on any of the groups and opportunities contact RDT on 0131 629 9398 or email [email protected]

A Community Council is a voluntary organisation set up by statute by the Local Authority and run by local residents to act on behalf of its area. As the most local tier of elected representation, Community Councils play an important role in local democracy. Our Community Council (RDCC) is made up of elected members, who are all unpaid volunteers offering their time and commitment to our community. As well as representing the community to our local authority, our Community Council facilitates a wide range of activities which promote the well-being of our community and advise, petition, influence and advocate numerous causes and cases of concern on behalf of our community.

RDCC hold seven meetings per year in Rosewell Parish Church Hall. You’ll find dates and times on our website: www.community-council.org.uk/RosewellandDistrict and on the Community Notice Board in the public garden area at the corner of Carnethie Street/Gorton Road. All of these meetings are open to the public and we invite all residents to come along and have their say. Our Community Police Officers and Local Councillors attend our meetings to give their reports and discuss any issues residents wish to raise. The Police update on the Rosewell Crime Statistics can be read on our website – not as bad as it sounds! And Local Councillors will keep you aware of what’s going on in Midlothian Council.

Occasionally, we have guest speakers on topics such as new housing developments, consultations, local issues, etc. Developers are now required to consult community councils prior to submitting major planning applications. We always invite them along to community council meetings so that you can meet them face to face and ask them questions on how any new developments may affect you.

Why not come along to our next meeting and see for yourself what we do? You can either sit in the audience and just listen or let us know if there’s anything at all we can assist you with that will help make community life better for you. Our meetings are quite informal and we’ll make you very welcome.

If you’d like to join our mailing list we will email you advance notice of meetings, agendas, minutes of meetings, plus notification of major planning applications and important community issues. If there are any community issues you would like to discuss please contact us via FEEDBACK on our website or email [email protected]

Our Aim • to ascertain, co-ordinate and reflect the views of our community, to

liaise with other community groups within the area, and to fairly express the diversity of opinions and outlooks of the people;

• to express the views of the community to Midlothian Council, public authorities and other organisations;

• to take such action in the interests of our community as appears to be desirable and practicable;

• to promote the well-being of our community and to foster community spirit;

• to be a means whereby the people of the area shall be able to voice their opinions on any matter affecting their lives, their welfare, their environment, its development and amenities

Rosewell Community Resilience Communities are being supported by local authorities to create their own Community Resilience Teams to work together in the event of an emergency or severe weather. The Beast from the East in 2018 already highlighted communities working together to support each other when services were unable to reach more rural areas but having a team ready and a prepared plan should put us in a better position.

Emergency response workers work with individuals, community groups, private sector businesses and voluntary sector organisations, to help them make communities more resilient.

Rosewell Resilience Group have started to plan for future severe weather. Leaflets were distributed to all households in Rosewell in 2019 and a group has been formed.

It is not too late to be involved, contact [email protected] if you can help in any way: • Clearing paths • Public information, social media updates • Tea /Coffee / Refreshments • Coordinator / Leaders • Checking in on vulnerable • Home care – elderly • First Aid skills • 4x4 transport / dropping medicines off • Or anything else

Travel Before setting off consider the conditions and think about how severe weather can impact on you. Check you have the necessary essentials to keep yourself safe on your journey.

Brown Bin Collection Your Brown Bin collection (if you have subscribed to the service) will stop for the winter mid-November and restart at the end of March. During the winter period you can still take your garden waste to your local household waste recycling centre at Penicuik or Stobhill.

Grit Bins Grit bins in the Rosewell area: • Carnethie Street – outside no 77 • Carnethie Street – at bell mouth to old St Josephs • Louisa Square – outside home • Pentland Crescent – outside no 57 • Pentland Crescent – outside no 60 • Rosedale Neuk – outside no 15 • Rosedale Grove – turning head at end
