General Manager’s Report
June 21 is the first of-ficial day of summer, butyou’d have a hard timeconvincing me that sum-mer isn’t already in fulleffect. The kids are out ofschool and I thinkthey’ve all been at thepool! We’ve lost power nu-
merous times alreadythis summer and we’vebeen alerted to a “glitch”we have with our electricpool gates. Since thegates operate on electric-ity, when the power goesoff, the gates do not oper-ate.We’ve had a couple of
instances where resi-dents were stuck insidethe pool fence and could-n’t get out until Rob ar-rived to unlock apadlocked gate. By thetime you read this arti-cle we’ll have this prob-lem remedied with somebattery backup equip-ment, so that at leastone gate will operate ateach pool in the event ofpower failure. The city of Daphne
has started mowing theold Lake Nine course.
According to RichardJohnson, Daphne’s pub-lic works director, they’llhave all the grass cutdown to 3 1/2 inches in amonth or so. They willbegin cutting back over-growth and trimminglimbs over the entireproperty.Their first improve-
ments will start on theold 4, 5, and 6 holes, where they are going toinstall a disk golf course, and start rebuilding thepaths. It’s going to beawesome! We requested input
on the name of the newpark in our E-News ear-lier this month. We hada great deal of responses.Thank you those whosubmitted their sugges-tion. The board will vote
at our next stated boardmeeting on June 18 onthe name to suggest tothe city of Daphne. The Lake Forest
Swim Team is off to agood start with its firstwin in a meet againstSpring Hill Swim Club. The Seahorses are outchurning up the Swimand Racquet pool everymorning at 8 a.m. Withswim, golf clinics, tenniscamps, horseback ridingand fishing, there’splenty of activities tokeep your family en-gaged this summer.Member participation
at our work sessions andstated meetings is light.I’m encouraging you toparticipate and get in-volved. The board of di-rectors has lots of stuffon our “to do” list andnothing gets done with-out us discussing it atthe work sessions andvoting on it at the statedmeetings. If you’re interested in
what’s happening inyour neighborhood, youshould come sit in on ameeting. If you wouldlike to address the boardwith an issue, come to ameeting. You can sign inon the register, and we’dlove to hear from you.

NEED AN AD PLACED? ~ CALL Rebecca or Frank at 928-2321
Deadline for all articles is the 10th of the month prior to publication.
The Lake Forest
Garden Club makes
quarterly awards to
homeowners who put
in the time and effort
to have their property
well kept and attrac-
tive. All homes in Lake
Forest are observed
each quarter.
What do we look
for?
does your lawn
have to be perfect?
Knowing how diffi-
cult it is to maintain
sod in this area, the
answer is no. We look
to see that the lawns
are mowed and kept
in as good a condition
as the seasons allow.
Pine straw and fallen
leaves are removed,
discarded or used for
mulch.
do you have to
have unusual or
special shrubs
around the home?
The answer is no.
We look to see that
the shrubbery is
trimmed, dead tree
limbs removed, the
home is visible
through the shrubs
and that the plantings
seem appropriate in
type and size for the
location.
do you have to
have ornate and/or
exotic floral plant-
ings?
The answer is no.
Flowering plants in
good condition and
placed in appropriate
planting areas is im-
portant, as is having
the planting beds
mulched or tended at-
tractively. Attractive
pots with plants high-
lighting certain areas
can add a special look
to the home.
do you have to
have expensive and
ornate hardscapes?
The answer is no.
Keeping the walks
and drives clear and
clean is important.
Other landscape
adornments of walls,
edging or material to
highlight an area are
nice to have. If they
are there, they should
be in good condition.
Mainly, property being
kept neat and clean is
the standard.
do you have to
have a perfect yard?
That is so difficult to
attain that we have to
say no. No “stuff” lying
around cluttering the
yard or blocking walks
or drives is important.
Of course, the stray
bike when a child
comes home or that
toddler toy on the
porch can be over-
looked. We imagine
you know what we
mean when we sug-
gest no “stuff” laying
around.
With that in mind,
we are adding this
summer quarter the
following homes wor-
thy of an honorable
mention:
• 367 Ridgewood
Drive — Rod Drum-
mond
• 125 Rolling Hill —
James Ratliff
• 103 Cherry Circle
— Arthur Anderson
• 104 Meadow
Wood Drive —

Jr.
• 158 Worchester
Drive — Joseph
Sheffield Jr.
• 150 Bay View
Drive — Joseph G
and Mary Thornton
does your prop-
erty have to be
“beautiful?”
The answer is no. It
is evident when regu-
lar maintenance is
practiced, and we do
notice.

do the work to make
Lake Forest a more

The Fishing Hole
Summer is hereand the cool days andnights are gone forawhile. The summerfishing pattern is ineffect for the remain-der of the summer. As the day warms,
the redfish and speckscan be found indeeper water aroundstructures such asreefs and wrecks outin the bay.The best times to
fish are early in themorning and late af-ternoon, with a topwater lure such as atop dog jr. MirrOlureor a mini skitter walk.As the day heats
up, fish the lower 1/3of the water columnwith a suspendedshrimp or croaker. When the weathergets too hot, I usuallyfish at night aroundboat docks and lightsfor speckled trout andout in the creek chan-nels with a deadshrimp for redfish. The flounder have
moved up into thenorth end of the bayand several have beencaught at the LakeForest Marina fishingpier. Bobby Blue, aLake Forest resident, caught three niceflounder one day andMary Crawfordcaught a keeper oneSunday afternoon inJune.June fishing in the
bay was tough due tothe heavy rains inlate May and the
water never seemed toclear up. So, if wehave more rains andthe water clarity isnot suitable for fish-ing in our area, gosouth and find clearwater and work thereefs along the bay.The specs are scat-
tered out from PointClear to Daphne andalong the ship chan-nel into the Mobileriver. I fished one daypast the Middle BayLighthouse and alongthe reefs around Mul-let Point just to get alimit of trout. So, get out early
and give it a try. Beprepared to movearound to locate fishand have a safe July4th holiday. If you plan to make
a fishing trip out ofthe Lake Forest Ma-rina, I have fresh ma-rine-grade, non-ethanol gas at theMarina for $3.55 pergallon.‘Til next time, have
a safe holiday andkeep a tight line.

Can You Make a Tax-Free Charitable Donation from an IRA?
Some donors like to make charitable donations directly from a retirement account. Congress helped them last year by passing a last-minute law late in 2014 to extend tax-free distributions for charitable purposes from individual retirement accounts. This provision, which had expired at the end of 2013, was renewed so late in the year that many were not aware or did not have time to take advantage of it.
In this type of giving, the distribution has to be set up such that it goes directly from the custodian (TD Ameritrade) to the charity. For those with this setup who are charitably giving anyway and the tax break is extended, you will benefi t. If not, the charitable donation is still established. We expect that a similar law to be put into place in 2015, so please call our offi ce to make sure before the end of 2015 if you think this is something you would like to do.
The law permits tax-free distributions to charity of up to $100,000 per taxpayer, per taxable year, from an IRA held by an individual who is 70.5 years of age or older. This can then count as the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from that type of account for the year. One benefi t of making a contribution like this is that the amount taken from the IRA will not count as taxable income. On the other hand, even though the distribution is going to charity, it is not deductible either.
Donations from an inherited IRA are also eligible for this provision as long as the benefi ciary is at least age 70.5. Donations from a Roth IRA are eligible as well although in the case of a Roth, the distribution would not otherwise be taxed as ordinary income. Donations from an active SEP or SIMPLE IRA are not eligible, nor are donations from qualifi ed retirement plans.
For married couples fi ling a joint return, they can exclude up to $100,000 from each spouse’s IRA for a total of $200,000. Additional information can be found on the IRS website and the provision is under IRC section 408(d)(8). As always, we recommend that you consult with your tax professional before undertaking such a step.
While this tax provision might seem fairly narrow in scope, it can be of tremendous benefi t to charitable organizations. Following the so-called Great Recession, charitable organizations have scrambled to make ends meet and the extension of this provision last year helped some of them meet their fund raising goals. We have written before about charitable trusts as another way to give a gift and realize multiple tax benefi ts, so if charitable giving is a topic of interest to you, we would welcome the opportunity to sit down with you and discuss your specifi c situation.
