GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS A3MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2013 THE DAILY NEWS

for their students,” she said.
Depending on the agreement with the par-ticular school districts, high school students in the La Marque, Hitch-cock, Santa Fe, Texas City, Dickinson and Clear Creek school dis-tricts can enroll in a col-lege-level course either at their high school or at one of the college’s two campuses, Lewis said.
While the numbers al-ready are growing, Lew-is said the college will continue to reach out to students to get more to enroll in the courses.
Statewide, almost 753,000 students were enrolled in community colleges in the fall of 2011, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Enrollment dropped by about 20,000 in 2012, ac-cording to the latest data available from the board.
Galveston College’s
official Fall 2013 enroll-ment was 2,131. That is about 60 students fewer than were enrolled in Fall 2012 and about 100 fewer than the college had a decade ago.
But Galveston Col-lege spokesman Joe Huff said enrollment has increased this se-mester with the begin-ning of second-start classes. He said he hopes enrollment will continue an upward trend.
“We feel good about where we are,” Huff said.
Galveston College, just like the rest of the city, continues to measure its recovery to Hurricane
Ike in 2008, he said.Losing 10,000 resi-
dents in the city after the storm was going to have an effect on college enrollment, he said.
As the college heads toward its 50th anni-versary in the 2016-17 school year, Huff said the college was hoping to increase enrollment.
With the college’s new Charley Thomas Fam-ily Applied Technol-ogy Center, even more students will be able to take applied technology classes, he said.
“We are hoping to reach about 2,500 as we head toward that mile-stone,” he said.

support squad buses. The new facility also
would feature a two-story field house that would house the dis-trict’s athletic offices.
There also would be
room for a yet-to-be planned multipurpose arena and performing arts center should the district — and voters — approve construction.
During this after-noon’s school board meeting, trustees also will get design updates
for the reconstruction of McWhirter Elementary as well as the expansion of the Westside agricul-ture/livestock barn.

largest city in Galves-ton County. The city’s population grew by al-most 85 percent from 2000 to 2010, according to census data, and the city is about 47 percent developed. According to the city’s budget, League City’s population grew from 45,400 in 2000 to 83,560 in 2010 and was estimated to reach 90,000 this year.
“It’s been a challenge,” Goudie said in discuss-ing the increase in the number of calls. “We are fortunate that we have a lot of highly dedicated individual citizens that are committed to volun-teering.”
Goudie said he hoped to increase the volunteer force by about 10 per-cent.
To become a volunteer, Goudie said residents must apply, go through an interview, a background check and a physical clearance before attend-ing the 15-week academy. Once a cadet makes it through the academy, he or she is then voted in by the fire department
members, he said.The department had
on open house Satur-day at Station 5 because that is the area where new volunteers are most needed, Goudie said.
Station 5, which opened in 2004, is the newest in the city and it is in the area of the city
where calls for services are increasing the most, he said.
“That’s our biggest fo-cus in our area of need right now,” Goudie said.
