Ecumen Branding UpdateBy Eric Schubert, Vice President,Communications & Public Affairs

To build a strong brand, we are building on the inside throughThe Ecumen Way (our culture) and through the outside (ourvisual identity). Here is an update on the work being done byour cross-organization team.

All housing managers, nursing home administrators andVelocity class members participated in Ecumen Way personalbrand training in September. Thirteen Ecumen workshop leadersalso completed training. The next step is to conduct workshops atour sites. This will be a multi-year process. Our goal is to holdworkshops for approximately 1,000 people over the next year.

The Ecumen brand identity team is developing a naming structureand brand identity structure for Ecumen’s owned communities toelevate the Ecumen name across our owned sites and services. We look forward to sharing that with you upon its completion.

Brand identity changes will be phased in at Ecumen-owned sitesbeginning in 2010 and continue through 2012. As this work takesshape, we’ll provide updates.

Ecumen is experiencing the power of the paperlessmedical records at Emmanuel Home in Litchfield. We’re using Keane Net Solutions web-based softwarefor:

Physician Orders – Real time physician orderseliminate the labor intensive “End of Month” reviewprocess to check physician orders for accuracy.

Drug Interaction Alerts – The clinician receives“alert” messages if the medication being entered hasany adverse drug interactions for the patient.

e-Prescribing – Physician orders are date and timestamped to instantly interface with the pharmacy to fillthe medication order.

e-Charting – The nurse uses a wireless notebook toaccess medical records for the medication pass.Replacing paper, it is portable and shows the nurse aresident photo and color-coded medications tohighlight orders requiring attention, such as upcomingmedications. This eliminates the monthly process ofprinting paper medication records, reduces errors, andultimately improves quality of care.

E-prescribing underscores our values of innovation, collaboration, service and stewardship whileempowering our clinical staff. Based on this successfulpilot, we will be extending this rollout to other Ecumensites.

Ecumen

Innovating in

Paperless

Medical Records

By Pat Wilcox, R.N.,Health Information ClinicianA new resident comes to Ecumen Bayshore, but the

admitting hospital has only limited information. Howdo staff locate the complete medical history? What ifthe person doesn’t remember where records are? Wecontact other providers, which can be like looking fora needle in a haystack. That will change by the end ofthis year.

Duluth-area health care providers will be able toaccess patient record information much more quicklyvia a secure, web-based health information exchangecalled HIEBridge™. We’re helping shape theprogram and since September 30, we and two Duluthhospitals – St. Mary’s and St. Luke’s – have beenable to identify online that a person’s records areavailable at each of these locations.

Here’s how it works: When an authorized staff personenters a patient’s name, the system will show wherethat person’s records are. We can then easily accessthe records from area providers, which will make careplanning much more efficient.

The initiative is spearheaded by the CommunityHealth Information Collaborative, or CHIC, aDuluth nonprofit promoting the use of informationtechnology and collaboration among health entities. It is a significant first step to a nationally integratedhealth technology system. Ecumen is the only long-term care provider in this initiative and was chosen toparticipate based on our record and commitment toinnovation.

What Our Customers Say:New AssistedLiving ResearchBy Helen Rickman,Operations Data Coordinator

Importance of Recommendations

The “recommendation” finding is especially important. A strong correlationexists between a company’s success and the percentage of customersrecommending it to others. We most impact recommendations through ourinteractions with customers. That’s where empowerment of our customersand each other is so important.

New to this year’s survey were questions related to The Ecumen Wayand our brand of innovation, empower and honor. As part of buildingthe top senior services brand, we wanted to gauge if being part of anEcumen community makes a difference to customers.

70% of families and residents felt being part of an“an Ecumen community” provided added value.

90% said they would recommend an Ecumen communityover other senior housing in their area.

A key area where we are looking at improvement is where we have a lack of transportation. Another area is variety in meals. Housing leadership isdeveloping performance and quality improvement plans for these areas thatare specific to select Ecumen communities. Thank you to everyone whoassisted in conducting this year’s survey.

Data tells us how we’re doing in ourmission and vision. This spring weconducted our assisted living customersurvey, which we do every two years. Thein-between year is where we develop andimplement improvement plans. Here arekey highlights from this year’s survey:

Overall satisfaction measured 93% (a combination of Excellent and Good ratings).

94% rated us Excellent or Good in “creating a feeling of home.”

93% of families and residents said they would recommend us to others.

OUR MISSIONWe create home for older

adults wherever theychoose to live.

OUR VISION FOR “Changing Aging”

We envision a world in which aging is viewed

and understood inradically different ways.

Congratulations to ourcolleagues in Detroit Lakes forthe legacy they have built and thefuture they are building!

In 1955, people throughout DetroitLakes — from members of theJaycees and Trinity Lutheran Churchto representatives of the Chamber ofCommerce and the Becker CountyWelfare Board — banded togetherto create Emmanuel Community.

In 1964, after seeking local, stateand national support, EmmanuelNursing opened its doors for thefirst time, offering those servicesand many more.

According to Living History, a 20-year anniversary publication aboutthe origins of Emmanuel, peoplefrom Osage to Audubon andMahnomen to Lake Park dedicatedportions of their paychecks “to afacility they might not use, but theirneighbor would need it, and it hadto be ready.”

As Ecumen regional director JanetGreen told the Detroit LakesTribune, “We’re still making surewe’re ready.” And today it’s doingit through innovation for the 21stCentury, making Detroit Lakes amodel of expanding senior servicesthat many communities – muchlarger nationally – would envy.
