Congratulations Over the weekend some of our

boarders went to Midmar Dam to

assist and support in the 2021

Midmar Mile. They were delighted to

spot fellow Saints boy,

Matthew Sates (Grade 12),

shortly after he completed

his race. Only the Top 20

swimmers were invited to

swim in this year's race.

Congratulations to

Matthew who placed 9th!

We also would like to take this

opportunity to congratulate all

those in our Saints Community

who have taken part in the

2021 Virtual Midmar Mile.

Important Information

We are looking forward to the Gazette publication which should come out soon. It has taken innovative

thinking to create opportunities for our boys to burn energy and be competitive in a safe environment

so far this term; the Inter House and Saints Premier League action has been most successful, and I

applaud Messrs Croeser, Gilchrist, van Wyk, Elder and coaches for their leadership. Next week is going

to be busy as we change over to winter sport but continue with A and B team summer codes.

We are hopeful that while we start preparing for winter sport, our summer teams may be able to play

one Saturday of inter-school sport.

Early communication always helps for planning; however, we ask for understanding from our parent

community with regards to next week’s fixtures. They will be available on SOCS but listed as

To Be Confirmed until such time as the Gazette is published. We would like to give our boys as much

chance as possible to play, so we will keep the arrangements in place up until 10am Friday 19 March,

whereby, if no Gazette has been forthcoming, we will be forced to cancel the fixtures planned for

Saturday 20 March. – Mr Rowan Irons (Director of Sport)

Please note that under the resources tab on SOCS there are two documents that will help with the

smooth running of an action-packed last two weeks of term:

• Next Week’s Schedule for Grade 8 – 12

• SOCS 101 – An Introductory Guide

It has been another very busy week in our Prep School.

Our boys are so fortunate to have the school’s facilities and hard-working staff available to them.

Throughout the week our boys have been doing half an hour of Wellness a day, playing Cricket, Swimming,

Tennis, Squash, Hockey, as well as the start of pre-season Rugby for our Senior boys. Highlights of the week were:

Our Squad swimmers have worked very hard in the

pool this term. They have been swimming at 06h30 in

the mornings, sometimes in the rain during afternoons

and so we wanted to reward them. With Ms Hannah

Barber, our Water Polo coach, having briefly taught

the boys about the game, they had so much fun and

this proved to be a great initiative.

This week, our Prep boys did their first shuttle

run test (beep test). It is a great way to gauge cardiovascular endurance and it complements our 2K Challenge

very well. The Wellness instructors were particularly pleased because as the group gets smaller and smaller,

those not running were seen on the side lines encouraging their friends.

Our Grade 1 and 2s played in their first competitive Cricket games

this year. Playing on The Saints Oval, the boys made lots of runs,

took wickets, held on to some great catches, and above all had lots

of fun with smiles all round.

Our Grade 3s also played their first game of competitive hard ball cricket.

The boys loved to play on the Prep 1st XI field which created lots of

excitement and proved how hard they have been working throughout this term.

This week’s Artwork of the Week is by

John Faluade in Grade 11, with the theme

of Man versus machine.

The image is inspired by Michelangelo's painting

in the Sistine Chapel of God giving life to Adam.

Update on the

Due to tests and assignments weighing down on the

boys, we had a smaller group join us this past weekend

at the Bisley Nature Reserve.

We came across a herd of 12 giraffe, which was an

amazing sight. Many of the boys had never been so

close to giraffe.

We collected and carried the poles needed for the

restoration of an old bridge and after that we took a

walk to the dam. The last floods in early February had

damaged the walkway across the wall, so animals that

usually passed by could no longer cross. To fix this,

we collected lots of wood from a fallen tree, some short

wooden poles, sand and silt that the dam had washed

down. All these were put onto the bank to create a

staircase where zebra and giraffe can now cross without

hurting themselves. This was done under the direction

of Alan Bennet and Dave Boardman.

The steps are rustic, natural and eco-friendly having

used available material. There is still some work to do

on the stairs but so far it is looking much better.

Earlier today, our Senior Primary

welcomed the audiologists from

the Ear Institute back onto campus

to have their hearing tests done.

Grade 7

IsiZulu With some exciting developments underway in the sphere of languages in our College, the Senior Primary have

been kicking every week off with a lesson in isiZulu. As part of our online assemblies, Mr Sokhela has been

teaching us isiZulu phrases and how to use them to engage with others. These are then practiced throughout

the week in classes and around school, informally.

It has been incredible to see the confidence growing in our boys. This has been particularly evident during

morning screenings, where we are now able to interact with each other in more than one language.

– Mr Brett Sliedrecht (Head of Senior Primary)

San

In Grade 3 we have learnt about Sub-Saharan Africa’s indigenous people;

one of which being the San people and their story telling through rock art

paintings. The boys created their own rock art paintings depicting various

stories. These are some of their stories:

Once upon a time we went on a hunt. We saw a huge woolly mammoth.

We were on the chase. I shot it, we chased it for 3 days. It suddenly dropped.

We called the tribe to help us carry it home. We got lots of supplies such as

meat and clothing and tusks. We all hope we get something like that again.

We got many animals for as long as we lived.

By Connor Hughes

Through demonstrating a recipe, our Grade 7 boys have spent some time

this week doing Afrikaans orals in class.

The San were very famous for their rock art. They painted with blood and other

things like bird droppings, charcoal, sand, and clay. The San lived in the Kalahari

Desert. The San are hunters who did not own anything. They shared with their

families and friends. They never killed or gathered more than they needed.

They used animal skin for clothes. Sometimes they used metal for arrow heads.

By Okuhle Lugongolo

Once upon a time there was a man that was hunting while he was hunting,

he saw a beautiful woman he got distracted and then the man said go pick up

fruit. But then the man felt sorry he apologised and they became best friends.

Crazy Senso Day

From slipping and sliding and running under the hose pipe to

playing in mud and being covered in foam and slime – our boys

in Scrummies had the very best Friday and Crazy Senso Day!
