As part o the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), NativeAmerican tribal members are entitled to reclaim their tribal artiacts rom museums. Amethod to detoxiy the harmul materials, mercury and arsenic, applied in the preserva-tion o these artiacts was explored in this research. The research ocused on the use obacteria able to tolerate the toxicity o the metals to convert the mercury on the artiact

When sunken vessels and other materials are resurrected rom the deep, the wooddeteriorates rapidly compared to its liespan while submerged. Researchers at St. An-drews University developed a technique to dry out waterlogged wood that reducestreatment time rom months, as with current methods, to days. Supercritical fuiddrying does not add chemicals to the wood that could aect its long-term preserva-tion and the reversibility o the treatment. This report is an evaluative comparison odierent methods to dry waterlogged archeological wood, analyzing shrinkage anddeterioration. Included in the comparison is the processes o popular polyethylene gly-col (PEG)/reeze drying method, the use o supercritical carbon dioxide, and air dryingmethods.
