The poliomyelitis epidemic, which started in Denmark between 1952 and 1953, heralded the beginning of intensive care as it is today, with the use of prolonged manual positive pressure ventilation in Copenhagen motivating awareness and research into mechanical positive pressure ventilation. For the two decades prior to this, prolonged ventilatory support was carried out using negative pressure tank ventilators, as the use of positive pressure ventilation was restricted to operating rooms.Following the success of mechanical positive pressure ventilation, the first intensive care unit in Australasia was founded in Auckland, New Zealand in 1958. At the same time, pioneering work was being conducted on ventilation of critically ill patients at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St

Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, and at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The first respiratory unit using tank ventilators in Australia in the late 1950s was established at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in Melbourne and the first respiratory unit equipped with positive pressure mechanical ventilators in Australia was created at Prince Henry Hospital in Sydney in 1961. The first general intensive care unit in Australia opened in 1961 at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, leading to a proliferation of intensive care units in the 1960s.

A brief history of intensive care

Last week, the 35th Australian and New Zealand Annual Scientific Meeting on Intensive Care and the 16th Annual Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Conference were held jointly at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN) and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society hosted the event.
