NBCSA Safety AwardsDuring NBCSA’s 4th Annual Professional Development Day held on October 28th , companies and individuals in the industry that have made significant contribution to the field were honored by being awarded one of four NBCSA Safety Awards.

Awards were presented in the following categories:

Leadership Award: This award is given to a company that has exceeded minimum standards in the area of training and development and implementation of program policies and procedures.

The 2015 Recipient of the Leadership Award:Bird Construction

Safety Star: This award is given to an individual that has been nominated by his/her company as an individual that has made a significant contribution to the overall safety of the organization.

Transitioning From WHMIS1988-2015

WHMIS came into force in 1988 and was updated in February 2015 to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

The main elements of WHMIS 1988 - product hazard classification, labels, safety data sheets and worker education and training - are all still required with WHMIS 2015. Suppliers and distributors are still obligated to:

• Communicate the hazard through SDS and labels;

• Update labels and SDS when new data becomes available; and

• Provide confidential business information to a health professional in the event of an emergency

What has changed are the obligations to retain the appropriate level of documentation, names and criteria for the hazard classes, how labels look and what is required on the safety data sheets.

To reduce the administrative burden of transitioning to WHMIS 2015, Health Canada has implemented a three-year timeline for suppliers and distributors to adjust to the new system. Employers can now start receiving both WHMIS 1988 and WHMIS 2015 products into the workplace. So, in effect, WHMIS 2015 has already started for Canadian businesses that use hazardous products. For employer obligations please refer to the requirements from your provincial OSH Regulator.

NBCSA is a RecognizedOccupational Health and Safety

Training ProviderEmployers are legally obligated under section 9 of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act to provide occupational health and safety training to their employees. Employers are also responsible to ensure OHS training providers will meet their training needs by assessing those needs and matching the right trainer with the training requirements of this assessment.

Raising the barIn 2014, WorkSafeNB introduced the Recognized Occupational Health and Safety Training Provider Program. WorkSafeNB, in conjunction with a committee representing trainers from the private sector, developed a recognized evaluation process.

To be recognized by WorkSafeNB, a private-sector OHS training provider must:• Develop courses and programs that meet all the requirements of New Brunswick’s OHS Act and its regulations• Deliver training courses and programs using principles of adult education.

We are pleased to report that we have gone through the evaluation process and are now listed on the WorkSafeNB website as a Recognized Provider. At the time of this article only two other training organizations in the province held this distinction.

Training Update-New CoursesWHMIS 2015/GHS

In partnership with NSCSA and NLCSA, NBCSA is now offering a WHMIS 2015/GHS classroom course as well as eLearning courses in both official languages. These courses cover employer, employee and supplier requirements for the existing WHMIS 1988 system as well as WHMIS 2015. Check out our course calendar for dates and locations near you. Register for eLearning by contacting our office.

HARASSMENTWe are pleased to announce that we now offer a ½ day Harassment course. This course has been adapted from NLCSA’s course. Harassment training is a COR course requirement for companies working in NFLD and Labrador. Workplace harassment falls under the New Brunswick Human Rights Laws and all employees and management should understand the fundamentals of what constitutes harassment and the appropriate procedures that should be followed should harassment be suspected in the workplace.

QUALIFIED TRAINING FOR NEWFOUNDLANDFALL PROTECTION AND CONFINED SPACE TRAINING

NBCSA, through a partnership with NLCSA and Labourer’s Training Institute of NB Inc., have an avenue for anyone in New Brunswick that is looking to work in Newfoundland. That province has a requirement that Fall Protection and Confined Space training be obtained through a recognized training provider as per the regulations in that province.

The Labourer’s Training Institute of NB Inc. has a certified trainer to instruct these programs using the NLCSA approved course. If you require this training please contact us for assistance.

Threads of Life assists families by offering one-on-one peer

experienced similar pain and suffering; Advisory support

regarding the workplace investigation and inquest process; Opportunities to promote workplace injury prevention and awareness

within their own community.

Changes to Booking External AuditsWe have recently implemented a new form to improve our process for booking external audits. The Pre-Audit Form will be mailed out with Letters of Good Standing-Audit Pending. Recipients must complete the form and submit it back to NBCSA prior to moving forward to the external audit stage of the certification process.

French Audit InstrumentNBCSA is pleased to provide the newest edition of the Audit Instrument- Version 3 in French. To receive a French Audit Instrument it must be outlined in writing when requesting your audit kit.

Expiry Dates and ExtensionsExpiry dates on Letters of Good Standing are non-negotiable. Requests for extensions on Letters will not be granted. For participants, NBCSA recommends you request your audit kit at least 2 month prior to the expiry date on your Letter. This allows ample time for completion, submittal and review.

NBCSA Professional Development DayOctober 28th marked the date for NBCSA’s 4th Annual Professional Development Day held at the Delta Fredericton. The format of the day was changed slightly from previous years to include NBCSA’s Annual General Meeting and announcement of NBCSA’s First Annual Safety Award recipients.

Approximately 65 people were in attendance. The day’s events included a presentation by Matt Letson from the law firm Lawson Creamer and Michael McGovern from WorkSafeNB on the legalities of alcohol and drug policies in the workplace with a focus on medical marijuana and the use of other prescription drugs. The session was very interesting and dynamic and many questions were raised from the floor regarding this very sensitive and complicated topic.

The afternoon session was dedicated to presenting NBCSA’s newest course – Harassment- which was presented by Shelley Poirier from NBCSA. The Harassment course is now on NBCSA’s Training Schedule; check it out at www.nbcsa.ca.

The goal of NBCSA’s Professional Development Day has always been to promote networking in the field and to provide new and relevant information to our Construction Safety Professionals.
