    Navisphere Management Environments 1-3

    About EMC Navisphere Manager

    Navisphere Management Environments

Manager runs on a Microsoft Windows NT or Window s 2000 host ,

which is called a management station. It can manage storage systemsconnected to the m anagem ent station or to servers that are accessible

to the man agemen t station over a LAN (local area network). The

storage systems can connect to the servers d irectly, through hu bs, or

    through Fibre Channel switches.

Servers with storage systems managed by Manager can run a

Windows operating system, NetWare, or one of several UNIX

operating systems. Servers connected to the same shared storage

system (storage system w ith the Access Logix option) can run

different operating system s. Servers connected to the same u nsha redstorage system (storage system w ithout th e Access Logix option)

must run the same operating system. A server can be connected to

both shared and u nshared storage systems.

Manager communicates with a managed storage system using either

the Host Agent (non-FC4700 series) or the SP Agent (FC4700 series).

For non-FC4700 storage systems, each server w ith a man aged storage

system m ust ru n the Host Agen t. With FC4700 storage systems, the

management station uses a separate network connection to perform

management functions. In addition to the Agent running on the host,

an SP Agent runs in each SP.

The following management environment has a Windows host that is

the man agemen t station for two FC4700 shared stor age systems

connected to servers with Fibre Channel switches. The management

station connects by LAN to the servers. The managemen t station

could also be a storage-system server. It manages the tw o Wind ows

servers and tw o UNIX servers shown .

    Fault and Problem Monitoring 1-7

    About EMC Navisphere Manager

    Fault and Problem Monitoring

Manager lets you monitor faults and problems with storage systems

on local and remote servers. Using Man ager you can

Monitor the statu s of the storage system, ph ysical disks and oth er

compon ents that compr ise it and the Storage Groups, RAID

Groups, and LUNs on the storage system.

Monitor the status of failover softwa re on the stor age-system

    servers.

To determine the status of managed storage systems, Manager

period ically polls them and records events. When a storage system is

operating normally, its icon is grey; when it has a failure, its icon isorange; and when it is in a transition state, its icon is blue. You can

expand the Equipment tree or Storage trees for a storage system todisplay its hardware components, managed hosts connected to it, its

RAID Groups, SPs, and Storage Group s, and to show wh ich of these

compon ents failed. Similarly, you can expand the Hosts tree for ahost to display the LUNs, the Storage Group , and the storage systems

connected to it, and to show w hich of these compon ents failed.

    About EMC Navisphere Manager

    Manager Architecture

Manager commun icates with the Host Agent runn ing on the same or

other servers on the network, and also with the SP Agent running in

any FC4700 storage systems. The management station an d the remote

Agents communicate with each other over a TCP/ IP network.

In a shared storage-system environm ent, the Host Agent on a server

commu nicates with ATF or CDE, which in turn comm un icates with

the Base or Core Software runn ing in a storage system s storage

processors (SPs). All shared storag e systems hav e Fibre Chan nel

interfaces to the server, so the Host Agent uses a SCSI protocol over a

Fibre Chan nel (FC) connection to commu nicate with t he Base or Core

    Software.

With FC4700 storage systems, the managem ent station u ses a

separate network connection to perform management functions. In

addition to the Agent running on the host, an SP Agent runs in each

SP. The architectural components of a shared stora ge system are

    show n in Figure 1-3.

    Manager Architecture 1-9

    About EMC Navisphere Manager

In an unshared storage configuration, the Host Agent on a servercommunicates with the Core Software running in a storage system s

storage processors (SPs), unless the server is running ATF or CDE. If

failover software is running, the Agent communicates with the

software, which in turn communicates with the Core Software.

If an u nsha red storage system has a Fibre Channel server interface,

the H ost Agent uses a SCSI protocol over a Fibre Channel (FC-AL)

connection to commu nicate with the Core Softwa re. If an unshared

storage system has a SCSI server interface, the Host Agent u ses a

SCSI protocol over a SCSI bus to commu nicate with the Core

Softwa re. The architectura l comp onents of an un shared

storage-system configuration are shown in Figure 1-4.

No storage systems with SCSI server interfaces are shared storage systems,

and only certain models of storage systems with Fibre Channel server

    interfaces are shared storage systems.

    About EMC Navisphere Manager

    Storage-System Configuration and Management

How you configure or manage storage systems with Manager

dep ends on w hether the storage systems are shared or un shared.

    Shared Storage-System Configuration and Management

Before you can configure or man age shared storage systems with

Manager, you need to set up the N avisphere environment.

NOTE: Until you enable data access control for a shared storage system, anyserver conn ected to it can w rite to any LUN on it. To ensure that server s do

not write to LUNs that do n ot belong to them, the procedures below assum e

that either just one server is physically connected to the shared s torage systemor that just one server has been p owered u p since the servers were connectedto the storage system. You w ill use th is server (called the configur ation

server) to configure the storage system.

To Set Up the Navisphere Management Station

    1. Install Manager on the managem ent station (Chapter 2).

    2. Start Manager and select the configuration server as a host with

storage systems to manage (Chapter 2).

To Install Optional Software on an FC4700 Storage System

Install SnapView or RemoteView software on the FC4700 storage

    system (Chap ter 4).

To Set Up the Host or SP Agent

The Agent you set up depends on the storage-system type:

For an FC4700 storage system - Configure the SP Agent on each SP inthe storage system (Chapter 5).

For a storage system other than type FC4700 - Configure the HostAgent on th e server (Chap ter 5).

To Configure a Shared Storage System with Manager

    1. Set storage-system general prop erties, mem ory, and cacheprop erties (Chap ter 6).

    2. If you w ant fair access to the storage system, set its host

    prop erties (Chap ter 6).

    Installing and Running Manager

    Starting a Manager Session

Important: Until you enable data access control for a shared storage system,

any server connected to it can wr ite to any LUN on it. To ensur e that server s

do not w rite to LUNs that d o not belong to them, the procedure in this

section assumes that either just one server is physically connected to theshared storage system or just one server has been powered u p since theservers were connected to the storage system.

You w ill use th is server (called the configuration server) to send the storage

system the configuration command s that you issue from Manager on a

Navisphere management station. The Agent configuration file on each SP

(FC4700 Series) or on th e configurat ion server (FC4500 Series) mu st be set up

to give you configuration access from the management station.

Before you use Manager, the following tasks mu st be comp leted.

Any user can run a Manager session from any management station

on which Manager is installed to mon itor storage systems. How ever,

only an authorized user can use Manager to configure or reconfigure

a storage system. A user is authorized if the Agen t on the SPs

(FC4700 Series) or on the server (non-FC4700 Series) is set up w ith

configur ation access for the user, as described in Chapter 5.

CAUTION!The Agent allows more than one Manager session to access thesame storage system at the same time. As a result, two authorizedusers are able to configure or reconfigure the same storage system

at the same time, but doing this may damage the data.

    Network time out

Sets the time interval in seconds to establish a connection to a

    Polling interval

Sets the time interval in seconds that determ ines how often Manager

perform s a poll operation if autom atic polling for the Manager

session (backgroun d p olling) is enabled, as described next.

    Automatic polling

Enables or disables background polling for the session. Backgroun d

polling maintains the polling interval counter and performs poll

    operations.

When background polling is enabled, Manager automatically

requests an Agent to poll a managed storage system for updated

information only ifautomatic polling for the storage system isenabled.

If autom atic polling is enabled for a storage system, the polling

interval and the au tomatic polling priority for a storage system

determine how often Manager requests Agents to poll storage

systems. If autom atic polling is not en abled for a storage system

when a poll operation occurs, the information in the Manager s

image of the storage system remains unchanged.

When background p olling is disabled, no poll operations occur.
