Let the race begin!

Pre-SCOR

What motivates you, what are your interests? Can they be found in a supply chain career?

Key skills for supply chain: analytical, big picture thinking, sense of urgency, financial knowledge, sales and marketing knowledge, questioning mindset, connecting the dots, end to end thinking, team player, fact driven…. Reach out to those already in supply chain and ask, find out about 'the day in the life’ in the various areas mentioned in the introduction. Understand what training and education is needed to succeed. It is also important to know in which type of organisation you would like to work in as supply chain cuts across all processes within a company.

Set the scope What is your strategy and long term goals? Careers take time so an underlying strategy is important. In which industry would you like to work and does it align with your principles? Where in the world do you want to be or do you want to work remotely at any time of the day? Write down your strategy and if you can, the next steps or stage gates you want to go through as well as timing. If you do not reach what you planned look for improvement opportunities for example education or cross department projects.

Configure How will you measure your progress and do not forget, there are others out there that may want to follow the same career path as you. If they are doing better than you, find out why. They may have a mentor and/or coach, have taken some courses, have regular conversations with their manager or peers. Take it into your own hands, you own your career!

Make sure you benchmark as to what the standard should be for what you are aiming at. Are there skills or experience missing? Do a gap analysis and be very honest with yourself, its beneficial to look at your own shortcomings and fix them. It’s often not the fault of someone else or responsibility.

Optimize Have another look at your strategy and documentation and compare it to where you are in your career. Are you benefiting from it or do you need to adapt your plan? Remember, change is inevitable, transformation is a choice (Heather Ash Amara). If your career is not moving as planned, where are the gaps? This can come from the fact that your original strategy does not align with what is needed in the industry you are in, or you are not making enough effort to stay up to date with change. There are always opportunities to shine and ensure that your skills are noticed by the right people. What about a cross departmental project or a position at another office elsewhere in the world, community work, starting a group in the company like a sports team….there are many ways to show who you are and what you are capable of. You cannot do everything and it is especially hard when you have diverse experience which is typical of supply chain roles. What are your top 3 as you have written down at the beginning? Review them and ensure they are still what you want, we change our priorities as we move through life.

Ready?

Be sure you know how you will go about it and remember to think about your audience. If you want to implement a project ask yourself “why should those funding it approve?”. Test some of your ideas, talk to peers and other managers or executives. Make use of your network to find allies if they are going to be in the same meeting. Off you go!! It’s not always easy but make sure you have fun and be self-critical before looking at others. We are all accountable for our successes and failures. NEVER forget to celebrate, even the smallest achievements!!! Make sure your team feel part of the celebration.

How did you do?

Remember, some people want to climb the career ladder and others do not which is fine. You need those who just want to keep doing what they are doing and this creates stability in the business. Continuous improvement is for everyone and the team must feel appreciated.
