Amended Rule 27(p)This Rule is now renumbered as Rule 27A and Clause (a) thereofchanges the role of the Development Committee from “to supervisethe implementation” of any development programme passed at aGeneral Meeting, to “implement and supervise”. In view of the moreonerous role, a new Clause is included stipulating that at least twomembers of the Development Committee “must have experience inthe building and construction industry”.

03I JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011
MESSAGE
From the Desk of The PresidentMy fellow members,By the time you read this message, Christmas would have been joyfully celebrated and past gone. You would probably be in themidst of ushering in a brand new year, hoping against hope that the tribulations of 2010, that you probably faced (as indeed all ofus) would be a distant memory and buried in the sands of time for all eternity.
My New Year resolution is to strive towards making PSC one big happy family. As the saying goes “To forgive is divine”. So allmembers of the committee including myself seek your forgiveness if we, in the faithful discharge of our duties as embodied in theRules of the Club, might have unintentionally caused you pain and suffering. 2011 will be a year where we will lend our ears tothe ground and listen to all your genuine grievances and take timely remedial action (where possible) for the good of the club asa whole.
So here is wishing you a Prosperous Rabbit Year.
Dato’ Mahinder Singh DulkuPresident
From the General ManagerDear Members,Since its inception in the year 1903, the Penang Swimming Clubhas grown from its humble beginnings to the prestigious landmarkstretching along five hundred metres of pristine coastline inTanjung Bungah.
As with all other clubs which are held in high esteem, great careand effort have been put in by our Committee to apply the ClubRules with a view to maintaining discipline and ensuring allmatters relating to the club are run and seen to be run fairly andefficiently.
With the above in mind, the PSC has introduced the VisitorManagement System (VMS) to better control Club Rule 16(c) whichreads as follows: “No person shall be introduced as a guest onmore than three days in any one month.”
Four locations have been selected by the Management to registerguests as they come into the club, namely:1) Reception, Level 62) Level B33) Level 144) Reception, Tower Block
The registration of guests augurs well for PSC not only to fulfilthe stipulation of of Rule 16(c) but also as an overall control ofthe security and well being of the club.
The implementation of VMS has started with effect from 12November 2010 at Reception, Level 6 and will proceed to theother designated areas in stages.
On behalf of management and staff, I would like take thisopportunity to wish you and family a happy and prosperousChinese New Year!
Regards,
Abd Rahman bin Ahmad

FIJI DIVEADVENTURE
October came and went, and saw two of our regular divers, C.C. Ongand Margaret, join a small group from Kuala Lumpur, led by RichardNg (an underwater photographer for National Geographic). This wasno ordinary trip, but a really special one, to BIG SHARK diving -WITHOUT CAGES - and also to a smaller island in the Fiji group(Taveuni) the Soft Coral Capital of the World.
Fiji is a dive destination that was a dream come true for me, and veryunexpectedly too, as we had planned a live-aboard around Komodofor this trip, but then Richard suggested we all go to Fiji instead!!!Komodo we can go to anytime.
Beqa Adventure divers were the organizers for the shark diving offPacific Harbour, on the south coast of Viti Levu, the biggest of theFijian islands, and Uprising Resort was our home for the first week.A beautiful island, with such friendly people, and Uprising Resort isnestled on the coast with the warm Pacific breezes coaxing you intothe azure ocean. Huge rooms and fantastic food, fueled us for theShark Diving and Feeding, which started on our second day.
Dive sites such as Ceasars Rock and ET, 7 sisters and 3 nunns, yieldreally fantastic visibility, easily 30 - 40 metres, and the coral and fishlife matches the visibility. Our photos give you just a glimpse of theamazing sights to behold.
But it was the Shark Diving and Feeding that we went for on the bigisland off Pacific Harbour.
Here, Beqa Divers prepared us for the adventure of a lifetime. Adrenalinrush was certainly the order of the day!
We all had to wear full dive suits with gloves - otherwise the big fishas well as the sharks might think that our hands were food!!! We alldescended and ascended together - no stragglers for the Sharks tohave as dessert !
Down to 30 metres we went, and waited around a coral arena, with4 shark guards to keep any “wayward” sharks at bay. Here a feederhand-fed huge bull sharks, as well as other species like lemon sharks, grey reef sharks, black and white tipped, with huge tuna heads. Thewater was kind of murky, full of fish blood and bits of flesh floatingaround, and hundreds of smaller fish ready to feed on the “crumbs”!These smaller fish were huge trevally and many others which wouldhave fed us lavishly.
SCUBA SECTION
I JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 11
Our first dive at 30 metres allowed us to feast our eyes on the heavybodied bull sharks which came in to feed, 6 or 7 of them at a time,in a sort of orderly pack, their steely gaze upon us, and taking theirfish heads down in one big bite. The smaller sharks around, knewtheir pecking order and kept out of the feeding zone when the bullscame in. You didn’t know where to look for them really, as they wereall around us. After about 20 minutes, we ascended to another feedingstation at about 17 metres to feed the slightly smaller sharks, but thesegrey reef and black and white tipped sharks were also pretty large, and a lot more active, nipping in and snatching their fish heads fromthe feeder, before twisting and turning away above our heads.
The third and final level of shark feeding, was at about 5 metres, alsoacting as our decomp stop, and this is where we all hung on to astrong rope, which swayed back and forth by the surge of the surfacewaves. Here the smaller shark had their fill, and those of us withcameras, also had our third chance to snap a different level of sharkfeeding in the bright sunlit surface waters.
Our second day of shark feeding was much better, as the sun wasshining and the clouds had dissipated, giving us clearer waters atdepth, and much better for our photography.
TAVEUNI - SOFT CORAL CAPITAL OF THE WORLDUndoubtedly this area of Fiji between Taveuni and Vaua Levu in theSomo Somo Straits, yields the most wondrous of soft coral varieties.Every imaginable colour is there and in such pristine conditions. Thewater visibility is absolutely amazing giving such deep blue hues inthe clear waters. Not only is the coral life wonderful but also th e fishlife, from the turtles and sharks, to the mantas and sea snakes. Weexperienced them all.
Our photographs certainly will make you envious of our experiencesthere, with the deep ocean and it's BIG SHARKS, mantas glidingoverhead, sea snakes checking you out, all in water of such claritythat you have to watch your depth. Check out the Scuba Section newsfor any slide shows of our trips. Fiji will certainly feature amongstthem.

ONSHORE NIGHT FISHING COMPETITION
On October 16, the night fishing session started as usual, with a very good dinner. Then the wind started blowing, wavesstarted to build, but what to do? We were here to fish and “go fish” is the game that night.
56 members gathered on the beach (26 men, 26 women and 4 children) and started casting at 8.00pm. The lines flew out farbut in some cases, very near the shore but little did we know it was going to be a record breaking night. Seated next to mewas Madam Lee Guat Lian, who complained that her “char hor fun” standard prawns were being ignored and saying how itwould feel to have a fish peel the line from her reel. Something she had only dreamed about so far in her years of fishingfrom the beach.
An hour passed without much action along the beach: the usual “gelama”, Saiseng and mini Pari’s were caught. Then GuatLian asked me “feel my line, teo teow liow lah!” she kept saying. Upon touching the line, I felt a hard tug, I shouted “Reel! You got a big fish!” I could see her reeling but her line was going out. Guat Lian tugged, pulled and reeled and a few minuteslater a Pari of 1.3kg was landed. She looked like a teenager returning from her first date with a grin from ear to ear. Her wishhad come true.
At 11.00pm the competition came to a close, with the individual winners collecting their prizes from the chairman. The resultsof the competition are on the Notice Board.
INTER TEAM FISHING7 NOVEMBER 2010
Now this was one event that was totally unpredictable. Why do I say that? Well, you may be good but you better pray yourteam mates are too!
There was no bias or ‘better teams’ that day, we all had to draw lots and hope for the best. All in all, pretty fairly spread outtalents. The hardcores were matched with the once-in-a-blue-moon anglers. Quite easy to point the newbies out, they werethe ones with the brand new gear! All 57 club members turned up with their own gear, just bought or borrowed, goes toprove fishing is the way to unwind.
At the blast of the horn, the lines were out, fishes were being reeled in. The mad rush had started but strangely it did notlast the duration of 3 hours half an hour that’s all! In between, it was a baby gelama here and a small puffer there. Luckilythe frenzy started again 15 minutes before the end at 1.00pm. A few of us had given up, and we were washing our equipment.Looking at the guys pulling fish after fish in, thinking “Shouldn’t have stopped lah!” The results for that day are on the NoticeBoard.

I JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 13
If there was ever a day to be called the ‘Ho Chui’fishing day, this was it. OK, so why do we call itthe ‘Ho Chui” day? Anglers will tell you its not justthe skill, or the place, the tide water also needs tobe moving up and CLEAR... not to mention a gooddose of mother luck. It’s supposed to be a Ngor-ahday, a Senangin day but what happened?
Fishing is all that, totally unpredictable! We triedfresh prawns, white prawns, ‘Hor Fun’ standardprawns, kembong meat, and even sotong. We castfar and we cast near, we used float, we tried smallerand smaller hooks but to no avail. To rub salt intothe wound, bait fish (belanak) was swimming upand down the coast... pity using a ‘Jala’ is notallowed. All I can say is, the nasi lemak supplied tothe members was great and I got the second prizeheh heh heh. And the results for the day are on theNotice Board.

Those werethe Days
DANCESPORT SECTION
I JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 17
The DanceSport Section held their theme night “Those
were the Days” on 4 December 2010 in the Multi-purpose
Hall. There were more than 130 members and guests
enjoying themselves in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.
Richard and Elaine started the evening with the theme
song.
It was a night of nostalgia for most members as they were
transported back to their twenties and thirties. Those were
the days when we all had fewer wrinkles, more hair and
lesser bulges! It was also a pubescent age when young
love was so exciting, and all our first dates wanted was “I
wanna hold your hand”, and the Beach Boys in the film
went wild over “An itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka
dot bikini”. The 60’s were the Flower Power age, the
Vietnam War, the Beatles, Rock n Roll and the Twist. The
70’s were Abba, the Bee Gees, John Travolta and Grease,
the Eagles and Disco. In the 80’s, we had Michael Jackson,
Madonna, Rolling Stones, Break dancing and Hip Hop.
There was lots of dancing throughout the evening - ballroom,
Latin, interspersed with line dancing. The line dances were
specially selected from the three decades, e.g. “Bad Moon”
by CCR, “I saw her standing there” by the Beatles, “Grease
Lightning”, “Flashdance” and “Rocking Robin” by the very
young Michael Jackson in the Jackson 5.
Christine and Ian performed the Jive and the Rhumba. The
3rd prize group winners of the recent Belly Dance
Extravaganza gave a demonstration entitled “Ice Queen”.
And Let’s Dance dancers gave us a Modern Jazz hip hop
performance. Our best dressed lady according to the night’s
theme was Emmeline.
With such a variety of dance forms in an evening, we
cannot help but recall that the Club President Dato’ Mahinder
had, on a previous occasion, and even Mr Lim Khoon Seng,
the Main Committee rep for the evening, said that the
Dance Sport Section events display a socially glamorous
and attractive aspect of the Penang Swimming Club.
The DanceSport Section invites anyone interested in learning
dancing to join the ballroom and Latin classes on Fridays
and Sundays, and line dancing on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Saturdays. The time tables are printed in the Nautilus.
All DSS members are invited to a Members’ Night on 15
January 2011 at 7.30pm in the MPH, where there will be
a free BBQ dinner, followed by dancing, of course!
Finally, the DanceSport Section extends its thanks and
gratitude to the F&B, Rahimi and the boys who decorated
the hall, Mei Leng as co-MC, and all who put together this
event.
Halloween Night was a screaming havoc... pumpkins, skeletons... ghosts and Angelsof Death were lurking in every corner. As guests casually walked in or sat quietlywith their nicely chilled beer, fearful screams would tear through the air from theseemingly “lifeless” figures scattered around the Fun Pub. Having a drink…? Howabout that sip of the “graveyard”? As the saying goes, one man’s drink is anotherman’s poison... Throughout the night, the Fun Pub reeked of unspeakable horror, and only the loud music from the “Zombie” DJ could muffle the horrified screams…You want proof? Check out the horror the attendees faced...
On 31st October...HALLOWEEN NIGHT...
