Guillhermina Kailipaina “Bina” Nieper was born in Honolulu on January 7, 1893 — just 10 days before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Although she did not receive much by way of formal musical training as a child, her mother, Susan Titcomb Nieper, was a gifted composer, and Bina was exposed to the sounds of Hawaiian oli and mele from birth.

In 1914, she organized Bina Mossman’s Girls Glee Club which for 30 years sang for the elite of Honolulu at various functions around town. Many of their early rehearsals were held at Washington Place, then home of Lili‘uokalani, and the Queen herself would correct their pronunciation. For seventeen years, the all-Hawaiian glee club also had a program on KGU radio station with Charles E. King as narrator. The club sang and

recorded both the popular Hawaiian “standards” of the time as well as Bina’s own compositions. Many of her newly penned songs became hits and were soon being performed by fellow musicians across Hawai‘i and beyond.

The Bina Mossman Glee Club was discontinued in 1944 during World War II, as Bina decided to devote more of her time and energy towards her second passion in life—politics. Her interest and involvement in politics began as a young girl, even before women had the right to vote. During her 35 years as an active member of the Republican Party, Bina pushed for progressive legislation and advocated strongly for the rights of women and children.

Bina’s commitment to serving her community, however, extended far beyond the political landscape. Bina was an active member of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu and chairman of their first and second Holokū Balls. She was also a member of the Daughters of Hawai‘i, Hui Poni Mō‘ī, and ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu. From 1958 to 1968, she served as curator of Hānaiakamalama in Nu‘uanu. As keeper

of the home, Bina was responsible for caring for the history of Queen Emma, her family, and their cherished possessions.

In 1952, Bina found herself called back to music, organizing and directing the Ka‘ahumanu Society Choral Group. Nicknamed the “Traveling Tūtūs,” this group took Hawaiian music around the world, touring Europe, Asia, Canada, and the continental United States between 1960 and 1978. In her shows, Bina would innovatively weave music, dance, fashion, and history into a beautiful narrative— both teaching and entertaining her audiences all at once.

Bina Mossman lived in a Hawai‘i very different from that of today. And yet, for the upcoming generation of young Hawaiian leaders, her life story and outstanding contributions are more relevant than ever. This Renaissance woman was not only an exquisite composer and musician, but a true servant of her community who gave voice to the causes of her time. We celebrate Aunty Bina tonight as the students of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama lift their voices in a wreath of songs—Na‘u e Lei: the Music of Bina Mossman.

*S ON S OF H AWA I‘I

Be strong, and ally ye, O sons of Hawai‘i, And nobly stand together, hand in hand.

All dangers defy ye, O sons of Hawai‘i, And bravely serve your own, your fatherland!

Be firm, and deny ye, O sons of Hawai‘i,

Allurements that your race will overwhelm. Be true and rely ye, O sons of Hawai‘i, On God, the prop and pillar of your realm.

REFR AI N : Ring, ring, Kalihi ring, Swell the echo of our song. Ray, ray, ray, ray, ray, rah, Ray, ray, Kamehameha! Let hills and valleys loud our song prolong!

The first song contest for male students was held at the School for Boys in 1921. A cup named for George Alanson Andrus, a former director of music at Kamehameha School for Boys whose life inspired the idea of an annual song contest, was offered as an incentive in the competition.

1922 marked the first year that both the Kamehameha boys and girls held song contests. Mrs. E. G. Scoville, a visitor to the Islands from Watertown, Connecticut, was so impressed with the singing of the Kamehameha girls that she donated the New England Mothers’ Cup for the School for Girls competition.

In 1967, an additional trophy was offered by the Trustees in honor of Charles Edward King, an 1891 graduate of the School for Boys. The trophy is awarded to the class winning the combined class competition.

The Louise Aoe McGregor Award, named for a member of the first graduating class of the School for Girls in 1897, was first presented in 1972. It recognizes the student director who has made the most significant contribution to the class in organizational ability, leadership, assistance to others, and persistence.

The Richard Lyman, Jr. ‘Ōlelo Makuahine (Mother Language) Award recognizes excellence in the use of the Hawaiian language within a song. Mr. Lyman, a Kamehameha Schools trustee from 1959 to 1988, was keenly interested in the preservation of Hawaiian language and culture.

The Helen Desha Beamer Award recognizes the best musical performance. Donated by the Kamehameha Alumni Association, the award honors the substantial contributions of Helen Desha Beamer to the lexicon of Hawaiian music. Helen Desha Beamer was a 1900 graduate of the Kamehameha School for Girls.

In the early years, the girls’ song contest was held in front of the Assembly Hall, and the boys had their contest in front of Bishop Hall. When the School for Girls campus on Kapālama Heights was completed in 1931, separate contests for boys and girls were held in the auditorium. In 1952, the first combined contest of the School for Girls and School for Boys Senior Division took place in Kekūhaupi‘o, the newly constructed fieldhouse. The song contest moved to the Neal Blaisdell Center in 1964 and has been attended by capacity crowds there since then. A highlight of the evening is the Hō‘ike, a show to entertain and inform the audience while the judges’ score sheets are tallied. The Hō‘ike is an exhibition of the beauty of Hawaiian mele and hula.

M O ‘ O L E L O

The Song Contest is unique to Kamehameha—a tradition that has involved all students in musical competition for ninety-seven years. Miss Laura Brown, Director of Music at Kamehameha 1926–1947, stated that “the objectives of the song contest are to build up the repertoire of the best in Hawaiian music for the cultural heritage of any student who attends Kamehameha; to develop leadership, cooperation and good class spirit; and to give students the use of their singing voices and to give them pleasure in singing as a means of expression.”

Overall Nina Keali‘iwahamana studied piano and Hawaiian songs under the tutelage of Mrs. Madeline K. Lam and mother, Victoria K. Ii Rodrigues. She performed with Hawaiian musical greats including Al Kealoha Perry, Benny Kalama, Alfred Apaka, Haunani Kahalewai, Webley Edwards, and Jack de Mello. She joined the highly popular Hawai‘i Calls radio show in 1958, and was a regular featured soloist for 17 years.
