We certainly needed it to cool the temperature and make the grass greener. We are starting to get back into the rhythm of a regular school week following our very successful and enjoyable swimming sessions. A big thank you to Mr Adrian Martin for coordinating and teaching the swimming lessons. Also a big thank you to all of our teachers and teacher aides for doing an amazing job with their swimming groups. From all reports, the swimming lessons were an outstanding success with swimming skill, technique and fitness developing in all students. A very BIG, BIG thank you to Goobidi for donating the use of their bus. This community spirit, on the part of Goobidi, drastically reduced the cost of swimming lessons as if we had had to add the cost of transportation, the fee would have increased to around $60 per student. The alternative of course, was walking to and from the pool which cuts into our valuable learning and swimming time. So once again, a BIG thank you to Goobidi. If your child borrowed a school rashie, could you please return in to the school as soon as possible. These rashies have Mossman State School written on the hem at the bottom so are easily identifiable. These form part of a class set that we use for excursions, therefore your assistance with this would be greatly appreciated. The District Interschool Swimming Carnival is planned for Friday 24 th November Mr Martin will let us know who has been identified to participate and represent our school in each event, later in the term. Our School Interhouse Swimming Carnival Funday is planned for Friday 1 st December. This was a huge success last year and we look forward to another fantastic day. Last Friday our school sent a team, comprising of Lani, Nanami, Jet-Tyler, Melika, Jermaine, Velma, Bianka, Sheniqua, Elizabeth and Louisa to the FNQ Red Ball Tennis Championships held at the Cairns International Tennis Centre. The reports that I have received from students and staff have been extremely positive with our students having a wonderful time. This Monday, we hosted the Cluster Moderation and Network Day for all teachers and teacher aides in our local area. We had over 90 staff here from seven different primary schools and it was an extremely successful day. Our teachers looked at student English writing samples from all schools to ensure consistency of judgement in all year levels. Teachers also had the opportunity to network with other staff and share ideas and resources. Teacher aides had a very busy day attending a number of professional development opportunities. Next week we have the Child Protection Investigation Unit from the QLD Police presenting sessions entitled ‘Speak Up, Be Strong, Be Heard’. These will be one hour presentations for all classes in the assembly room. Red ball Tennis Competition On Friday the 13th October, ten of the grade 4 students went to the Cairns International Tennis Courts to play in the Red Ball Tennis Competition. We had to play against

four schools in the Cairns district. We all had turns playing on the singles and doubles courts. It was really hot so we had to keep refilling our water bottles many times on the day. When it was lunch we luckily had the opportunity to watch some famous tennis players. We are unsure of what place we came because we didn’t

stay for the presentation. Many teachers from different schools replied that we had really good sportsman ship, before we left we all received a participation bag full of

goodies. Thank you Miss Ivy for transporting the kids down to Cairns for the day. From Melika and Nanami.

Year 1A In 1A this term, we are focusing on developing our story

writing, number sense and problem solving skills. We have been reading ‘How the Birds got their Colours’ and writing down which parts of the story are the beginning,

middle and end. We have been using our ‘Number of the Day’ to practice different ways of representing

numbers. This is essential to ensure that students can write, read and solve problems in mathematics. In the

mornings, we have been using different building materials to practice solving building problems and

working as a team.

6.00pm to 7.30pm

Resource Centre

A range of finger foods will be served at 5.45pm.

RSVP for catering – Monday 30th October.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a cyber safety education program

that educates parents, carers and school staff on how young

people are using technology, the challenges they may face

online, and how to help them overcome these in a safe and

ethical way.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the

Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and

the Commonwealth Bank. The program is delivered in

collaboration with policing partners New South Wales

Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police,

South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia

Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.

The presentation will be delivered by a local law

enforcement member and an industry volunteer. The

presentation covers issues relating to children and young

peoples’ privacy and security online, their relationships with

other users and their online reputation. It provides insight

into the devices young people are using, as well as the

popular websites, apps and social networking sites they’re

accessing.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about

young people and the online environment, and how you can

help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.
