New England Colonies
Forests and lumberThere was an abundance of forests which
provided lumber, used especially for the ship building industry.
Ship building was also popular in the Middle Colonies.
Lumber was also used for barrels, fences, and homes.
WhalesWhaling industry was important to the New
England Colonies.Whale oil was used to light up the lamps in
colonists’ homes.
Cod and fishCod was also a main industry in the New
England Colonies. There can be up to six million pounds of
cod each year.It was very good for eating.
AnimalsColonists got a lot of their food from
hunting as well as fishing.Deer and beaver are just two of the animals
hunted in this region.
Middle Colonies
Lush, fertile soilFarming was largely done in the Middle
Colonies because of the lush, fertile soil available; whereas in the New England Colonies, farming was difficult because of the rocky soil found there.
Selling of crops was a main source of income for farmers in this region.
Water and woodThe Middle Colonies had many long rivers
that could be used to transport crops.There was ample lumber in this area so
shipbuilding was popular here, too.
FarmingThis area produced a lot of fruits and
vegtables, grains,
AnimalsColonists got a lot of their food from
hunting as well as fishing.Deer and beaver are just two of the animals
hunted in this region.
Southern Colonies
Money cropsRice was a huge cash crop in this region.Tobacco was another huge cash crop in this
region.The climate in the region was just right for
growing many acres of these crops.There was also plenty of rain!
Plants used to dye clothingIndigo, marigolds, and goldenrod were
grown to make dyes.Indigo produces a blue color used to dye
jeans.
Pitch and PinesPine trees grew in abundance in the
Southern Colonies.The sticky sap from pine trees was used to
make ‘pitch’, a sticky substance used to hold things together.
