Dear Parishioners,

As a parish community, we wish to continue to pray for Fr. Paul Palmiotto as we pre-pare to celebrate one month of his passing with a Memorial Mass on Saturday, March 13th at 11:00am at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. The Mass will be livestreamed on our Facebook page and on our new website Nativitybvm-StStanislaus.org We remember Fr. Paul for giving himself untiringly for the good of the Church. As you know, the funeral arrangements took place at his home parish, St. Andrew of Avellino in Flushing. He was buried on Tuesday, February 23rd.

Up to the one month Requiem Mass, I would like to offer you the possibility of doing Spiritual Bouquets for Fr. Paul. As you might know, Spiritual Bouquets are prayers or devotional acts that someone has or will offer for someone else. This can be the num-ber of Masses attended, Holy Communions offered, rosaries and/or other prayers said, or even good deeds performed. This is a special way for us to join in prayer--spiritually for the loving memory of our former pastor. It is moving to see the many of you who have booked a Mass for Fr. Paul. You know how important it is the celebration of Mass for our faithful departed. As we know, the greatest act of love that we can make now for Fr. Paul is prayer. Through prayers, especially Mass, we help our loved ones on the way to eternity.

Lent is a season of Reconciliation, forgiveness, healing

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Wednesday, February 17th, 2020 is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent

In order to assist us during this Lenten season, the Church reminds us of

some of the minimal requirements that are to be observed:

ABSTINENCE: All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are re-

quired to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of

Lent.

FASTING: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound

to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting

oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light suste-

nance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day.

EASTER DUTY: After having reached the age of discretion, members of the

faithful are bound to confess at least once a year grave sins which have not

already been absolved and to receive Holy Communion at least once a year.

This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter Season, unless for a good

reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year.

The faithful are encouraged to celebrate the sacraments of the Eucharist and

Penance frequently during the Lenten season. Reading the Scriptures, prayer

before the Blessed Sacrament, generosity toward the poor and the needy are

additional means of becoming more involved in the Lenten season.

Are excused from fast or abstinence, besides those outside the age limits,

those of unsound mind, the sick, the frail, pregnant or nursing women accord-

ing to need for meat or nourishment, manual laborers according to need.

They can substitute in whole or in part for fast and abstinence other forms of

penance, especially works of charity and exercise of piety. Minors who are

not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are encouraged to do some little

acts of penances like giving up sweets and unnecessary time spent with any

technological devices.

It should be noted that Fridays throughout the year are designated days of

penance. The Code of Canon Law states that Friday is a day of abstinence

from meat throughout the year except on Solemnities. The American Bishops

allow us to choose a different form of penance rather than abstaining from

meat, but there must be some form of penance, for this is the day we com-

memorate Christ's suffering and death. The bishops stress that "among the

works of voluntary self-denial and personal penance...we give first place to

REGLAMENTOS DE CUARESMA

Miércoles, 17 de febrero de 2020 es el miércoles de ceniza, el comienzo de la Cuaresma. Para ayudarnos durante esta temporada de Cuaresma, la Iglesia nos recuerda algunos de los requisitos mínimos que se deben ob-

servar:

ABSTINENCIA: Todos los fieles que han cumplido 14 años de edad deben abstenerse totalmente de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y los viernes de Cuaresma. AYUNO: Todos los fieles entre las edades de 18 y 59 inclusive están obliga-dos a ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Esta práctica impli-ca limitarse a una sola comida completa y evitar la comida entre comidas. El sustento ligero también se puede tomar en otras dos ocasiones durante el día. PRECEPTO DE PASCUA: Después de haber alcanzado la edad de la dis-creción, los miembros de los fieles deben confesar por los menos una vez al año los pecados graves que no han sido absueltos y recibir la Sagrada Comunión por los menos una vez al año. Este precepto debe cumplirse durante la temporada de Pascua, a menos que por una buena razón se cumpla en otra época del año. Se alienta a los fieles a celebrar los sacramentos de la Eucaristía y la Peni-tencia con frecuencia durante el tiempo de Cuaresma. La lectura de las Escrituras, la oración ante el Santísimo Sacramento, la generosidad hacia los pobres y los necesitados son medios adicionales para involucrarse más en el tiempo de Cuaresma. Están exentos de ayuno o abstinencia, además de los que están fuera de los límites de edad, los de mente enferma, los enfermos, los frágiles, las mujeres embarazadas o lactando según la necesidad de carne o alimento, los trabajadores manuales según las necesidades.
