Dear Lord,
Bless our family. Be so kind as to give us the unity, peace, and
mutual love that You found in Your own family in the little town of Nazareth.
Saint Joseph, pray for the head of our family.
Obtain for him the strength, the wisdom, and the prudence he needs
to support and direct those under his care.
Mother Mary, pray for the mother of our family.
Help her to be pure and kind, gentle and self-sacrificing.
For the more she resembles you, the better will our family be.
Lord Jesus, bless the children of our family. Help them to be obedient and
devoted to their parents. Make them more and more like You.
Let them grow, as You did, in wisdom and strength and grace
before God and man.

Background on the Gospel Reading
Today we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. As we do so, our Gospel invites us to consider Joseph's protection of Jesus in the face of danger. Just as in the announcement of Jesus' birth, an angel appears to Joseph in a dream. The angel warns him of Herod's plans to harm Jesus. Joseph follows the command of the angel and takes Joseph and Mary to Egypt, returning only after receiving word in another dream that it was safe to do so.
This feast is part of the Christmas season, so we should look at today's Gospel in the context of what Scripture tells us about Jesus' birth. Today's reading is found in the Gospel of Matthew, following the story of the visit of the Magi. Recall that Matthew's story about the birth of Jesus makes Joseph the primary character. Among Matthew's themes in this infancy narrative is Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies about the messiah. Indeed, the story of the Holy Family's flight to Egypt recalls the story of Moses in the Book of Exodus.
It should also be noted that today's reading omits the verses that recount Herod's order of the massacre of the infant boys in and around Bethlehem. We mark this event on the Feast of the Holy Innocents on December 28.
These events remind us of the difficult reality of Jesus' birth. While the story of the Magi's visit will be recalled in our liturgy on the Feast of the Epiphany, our Christmas celebration is made more sober by the recollection that not everyone received Christ's birth with joy or obedience. Herod's jealousy and malice contrast with Joseph's obedience to the words of the angel. The Holy Family's escape to Egypt and the massacre that Jesus is saved from remind us of the struggles and sacrifices that are required as preparation for God's salvation.

Mary, Mother of God January 1
Remember on Christmas morning how we found our way to the stable? It may have been the stable on the mantle or under the Christmas tree or in our parish church. We gazed at the baby in the manger just like the shepherds had done so long ago. Jesus was there with Mary and Joseph. Today we begin our new year at the Eucharistic Celebration. We thank God for Mary, Jesus' mother, who brought the Savior into the world. Because she is the mother of Jesus, God's Son, she truly is the Mother of God. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary conceived Jesus. Joseph was Jesus' loving foster-father.
God chose Mary to be the mother of his Son. She was a teenager and her parents were Joachim and Anne. Mary loved God and her Jewish religion. She was probably considered ordinary by her neighbors. It would be God's work in her that would make her so special, so blessed. God sent the Archangel Gabriel to Mary's town of Nazareth. The angel asked her to accept a wonderful plan-wonderful for her and for all of us. Mary wanted to please God and she accepted the plan. She became Jesus' mother. Mary and her husband, Joseph, tried to raise Jesus the best way they could and with great love. Jesus spent many happy, quiet years with Mary and Joseph in Nazareth.
When Jesus was about thirty years old, he began his preaching and healing ministry. This is usually called his public life. It seems that sometime before that Joseph had died. Jesus could not now stay just in the little home and carpenter shop at Nazareth. Mary frequently went with her friends to be near her Son. Mary attended a marriage celebration in Cana. Jesus and his disciples came too. When the wine was gone, Mary asked Jesus to do something. She wanted him to save the couple from being embarrassed in front of their guests. He worked the miracle of turning plain water into delicious wine. Mary loved Jesus and believed in him. She was there when he was nailed to the cross. In fact, she stayed right beneath the cross and received his dead body into her arms. After the resurrection, Mary waited with Jesus' apostles for the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The apostles loved her. They knew they needed more courage to be real followers of Jesus. Mary prayed for them and encouraged them. She taught them how to be disciples of her Son. Mary's feast days are special events that happen throughout the year. Today's feast honors her as God's Mother. She wants to be our mother, too.
Reflection: We can always turn to Mary and ask her that our communion with her Son may bring us to salvation.

Saints of the Week/ Santos de La Semana St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (January 4th)
Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York City, USA. They were not Catholics but Episcopalian. Her father, Richard Bayley, was a well-known doctor and her mother, Catherine, died when Elizabeth was just three years old. As a teenager, she did many things to help poor people. When Elizabeth was nineteen, she married William Magee Seton, a rich merchant who owned a fleet of ships. Elizabeth, William and their five children had a happy life together. But ten years later, William lost his fortune and his good health within a short time. His wife heard that the weather in Italy might help him get better. Elizabeth, William and their oldest daughter, Anna, traveled there by ship. But William did not get better and finally died of tuberculosis.
Elizabeth and Anna remained in Italy as guests of the Filicchi family. The Filicchis were very kind and tried to make Elizabeth and Anna's sorrow easier by sharing their own deep love for the Catholic faith. Elizabeth began to believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. When she returned home to New York she decided to become a Catholic. Her family and friends did not understand. They were
very upset, but she went ahead with courage. Elizabeth joined the Church on March 4, 1805. To support her family and make sure her children received a proper education, Elizabeth opened a school in Boston and ran it like a religious community. A few years later, the archbishop invited Elizabeth to come and open a girls' school in Baltimore. It was there that Elizabeth decided to live as a sister. Many women came to join her, including her sister, sister-in-law and her own daughters, Anna and Catherine. They became the American Sisters of Charity and Elizabeth was given the title "Mother Seton." She started many Catholic schools and a few orphanages. She made plans for a hospital, which was opened after her death. Elizabeth loved to write, and she also translated some textbooks from French to English. But Elizabeth was loved most for her care of the poor and the sick. Mother Seton died on January 4, 1821, in Emmitsburg, Maryland. If something should happen that changes our lives from happy to difficult, let us turn to God as Mother Seton did and ask for His help. God can help bring out our hidden talents and we are then able to do things we never dreamed possible.

Pero si se ve con ojos de evangelio, hemos de rectificar muchas conductas. San Pablo ya decía a los Colosenses 3,12: "Sea vuestro uniforme: la misericordia entrañable, la bondad, la humildad, la dulzura, la comprensión. Sobrellevaos mutuamente, perdonándoos, como el Señor os ha perdonado. Y por encima de todo, el amor, la Palabra, la Eucaristía... Hijos, obedeced a vuestros padres, que eso le gusta al Señor. Padres, no seáis posesivos, para que no se desanimen vuestros hijos". Tampoco les sobreprotejáis en exceso, porque se quedarán enanos, no crecerán y estarán necesitando a todas horas y en todos los problemas, el paraguas de papá, la sombrilla de mamá. ¡Yo bendigo el día en que el Obispo, a mis veinticuatro años, me nombró párroco y tuve que sacarme las castañas del fuego con mis propias manos! Eso me ayudó a crecer y a profundizar mi sentido de la responsabilidad. Pero ¡hay que educar! La primera escuela es la familia, y nadie la puede sustituir. Ese principio del derecho natural que a los poderes de hoy les cuesta tanto entender y sobretodo, practicar, porque les impide manipular. Al niño hay que enseñarle el respeto a todos; el deber
de dar gracias, que a él ni le nace, ni lo comprende, porque cree que todo se lo merece y que todos han de estar a su servicio y así crecerá y de mayor e incluso con cargos de responsabilidad y de relumbre, incurrirá en defectos enormes de ingratitud, de ignorancia de lo que se debe a quienes le educaron o a los que le han prestado un servicio con sacrificio y, ni se les da una
explicación por la pérdida de papeles o, si se pidieron, en fuerza de autoridad, ni razonar la no publicación, ni agradecer el trabajo y, tal vez el sacrificio, que supuso su cumplimiento. Al niño no se le hizo ver que hay que agradecer y que no todos deben estar a su servicio por su cara bonita. LOS PROBLEMAS La Sagrada Familia también, como la familia de hoy, tuvo que afrontar y convivir con grandes problemas; con una dramática situación en cada uno de sus miembros: un padre que biológicamente no lo era; una madre que no era esposa plena; y un hijo que rebasaba la dependencia natural. A ella deben acudir las familias de hoy para aprender a vivir el amor y el sacrificio, conscientes de que la gracia del sacramento del matrimonio fortalece a los esposos para sacrificarse el uno por el otro, y ambos

El niño crecía y se robustecía, llenándose de saber, y el favor de Dios descansaba sobre él". La Sabiduría y la sensatez de la Sagrada Familia de Nazaret deberían traducirse en un nuevo modelo de familia y de relaciones humanas. Aunque sabemos muy poco de su convivencia y estilo de vida; tenemos un dato seguro: la pobreza. Pobreza de los padres: José, era un hombre justo, carpintero o albañil de profesión el "tektón" griego, que sirve para todas las ocupaciones necesarias y sin brillo. María, una joven madre dedicada a las tareas del hogar. Y un hijo: Jesús, aprendiz de carpintero y de servicio del hogar con su madre. Allí, en aquel ambiente austero se educó Jesús. Cuando lo presentaron sus padres en el templo no pudieron ofrecer a Dios ni siquiera un cordero, como los ricos, sino dos pichones o tórtolas, como los pobres. En su predicación condenará el despilfarro y el derroche de los epulones y proclamó felices a los pobres: "Dichosos los que pobres de espíritu". "Este será como una bandera discutida. Y a ti una espada te traspasará el alma" Lucas 2, 22. Desde esa profecía dolorosa hay que contemplar las dificultades que hoy encuentra la familia: Equivocada independencia de los esposos entre sí; intercambio aberrante de parejas; casos raros de parejas de hecho; ambigüedad ante la autoridad sobre los hijos; dificultades para transmitir los valores humanos y cristianos. El divorcio, el aborto, el recurso cada vez más frecuente a la esterilización, la mentalidad anticonceptiva, de tantas formas utilizada y normalmente justificada. EMIGRANTES POLITICOS "Levántate, coge al Niño y a su madre y huye a Egipto; quédate allí hasta que yo te avise, porque Herodes va a buscar al niño para matarlo" Mateo 2,13. "Llamé a mi hijo para que saliera de Egipto". José, hijo de David, entronca, como padre legal, a Jesús, con las promesas de Dios a David, transmitidas por los Profetas. San Mateo nos narra la prolongación de Israel en Jesús. Israel, que es Jacob, bajó de Palestina a Egipto. Conocemos la historia de José. Multiplicada la familia, permanece en Egipto cuatrocientos años, la mayor parte de ellos, en esclavitud. Yahvé los libra por medio de Moisés. Como el pueblo de Israel, Jesús baja también con sus padres a Egipto y hace su Éxodo atravesando el desierto. José, el hijo preferido de Jacob, fue exiliado a Egipto por la envidia de sus hermanos, como Jesús por la de Herodes y, como nuevo Moisés, viene a salvar a su pueblo de la esclavitud De noche huyendo y sobresaltados José y María ante el menor indicio de sospecha, escondiéndose, disimulando, humillados. José, obediente al ángel, sin jamás poner reparos a sus órdenes. De noche. ¿Ahora? ¿No puedo esperar a mañana? Hace frío, no tengo nada preparado... El Niño es pequeño. Mi esposa muy joven. Lo mismo María, sin inquietar más a José con sus quejas o protestas... Hasta que el Padre lo libere de Egipto, como un hebreo de tantos, como los patriarcas, que liberados del Faraón de Egipto llegan a la Tierra Santa, Jesús, el Hijo amado del padre, liberado de Herodes, camino inverso de José. Es la lucha constante del mal contra el bien. Los emigrantes de hoy tiene un modelo donde mirarse: La
Sagrada Familia, dechado de emigrantes inocentes. Tuvieron que expatriarse: en busca de trabajo que no encontraron en su país. O tuvieron que salir porque en su patria la envidia les impedía realizar su vocación o desarrollar su personalidad, o porque no podían investigar por falta de medios. Como ellos, Jesús, hermano de los desterrados de todas las clases y por todas las causas. en todo semejante a los hombres. Para obviar estas y otras dificultades, es precisa e indispensable una catequesis clara y positiva, el recurso a la austeridad, la ascesis constante propia de una vida cristiana llena y contagiante, y la oración incesante para que no nos deje caer en la tentación. Difícilmente superarán los cristianos de hoy todas esas asechanzas, sin el recurso a la intercesión de la Sagrada Familia y al establecimiento en el propio hogar de aquel clima humano y celestial, feliz y sencillo, lleno de pruebas y privaciones, de candor y del sudor del trabajo y también de poesía, en el ambiente de Nazaret. EL MUNDO HOY Nos horroriza el estado del mundo actual. En el fondo de todo, el odio, la soberbia, la envidia, la venganza, la crueldad, la intolerancia. Caín en acción: "¿Dónde está tu hermano? ‐ No sé. ¿Soy yo el guardián de mi hermano? La sangre de tu hermano me está gritando desde la tierra hasta mí" (Gn 4,9). ¿Ha progresado el género humano? En ciencia, en técnica, en confort, ciertamente sí. En humanidad, en civilización, en ética, permanece en la edad de piedra. "El siglo XX será considerado una época de ataques masivos contra la vida, una serie interminable de guerras y una destrucción permanente de vidas humanas inocentes. Los falsos profetas y los falsos maestros han logrado el mayor éxito posible" (Evangelium vitae). La cifra horripilante nos espanta: noventa millones de abortos al año. La sangre de esos niños, torturados en el seno de sus madres, que, como nuevos herodes exterminan a sus propios hijos, ¿cómo no va a gritar a Dios, Padre de todos? "Por eso te maldice esta tierra, que ha abierto sus fauces para recibir de tus manos la sangre de tu hermano. Aunque cultives la tierra, no te dará ya sus frutos" (Gn 4,11). Y "¿cómo no pensar también en la violencia contra la vida de millones de seres humanos, especialmente niños, forzados a la miseria, a la desnutrición y al hambre, violados, exterminados en las calles, empleados en hacer la guerra, sin tener acceso a una mínima instrucción?" (EV). Por eso ¡qué lejos está el mundo actual de ser dichoso consecuencia de temer al Señor y seguir sus caminos! ¡De poder comer el fruto de sus trabajos; de considerar como bendición del Señor a la mujer como parra fecunda y a sus hijos como brotes de olivo alrededor de su mesa! Salmo 127. "Levántate, coge al niño y a su madre, y vuélvete a Israel". Volvieron a Galilea, a su ciudad de Nazaret". "El niño iba creciendo y robusteciéndose, y se llenaba de sabiduría; y la gracia de Dios lo acompañaba" (Lc 2,40). Jesús ha venido a traernos la verdadera humanidad, la civilización verdadera, la cultura del amor. Ha venido para revelarnos sus orígenes eternos.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,
in the days of King Herod,

and all Jerusalem with him.
Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people,
He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

Then Herod called the magi secretly

After their audience with the king they set out.

Levántate y resplandece, Jerusalén,
porque ha llegado tu luz
y la gloria del Señor alborea sobre ti.
Mira: las tinieblas cubren la tierra
y espesa niebla envuelve a los pueblos;
pero sobre ti resplandece el Señor
y en ti se manifiesta su gloria.
Caminarán los pueblos a tu luz
y los reyes, al resplandor de tu aurora.
Levanta los ojos y mira alrededor:
todos se reúnen y vienen a ti;
tus hijos llegan de lejos, a tus hijas las traen en brazos.

Hermanos: Han oído hablar de la distribución de la gracia de Dios,
que se me ha confiado en favor de ustedes. Por revelación se me dio a
conocer este misterio, que no había sido manifestado a los hombres
en otros tiempos, pero que ha sido revelado ahora por el Espíritu a
sus santos apóstoles y profetas: es decir, que por el Evangelio,
también los paganos son coherederos de la misma herencia,
miembros del mismo cuerpo y partícipes de la misma promesa en
Jesucristo.

Evangelio
Mt 2, 1-12
Jesús nació en Belén de Judá, en tiempos del rey Herodes. Unos
magos de oriente llegaron entonces a Jerusalén y preguntaron:
“¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que acaba de nacer? Porque vimos
surgir su estrella y hemos venido a adorarlo”.
Al enterarse de esto, el rey Herodes se sobresaltó y toda Jerusalén
con él. Convocó entonces a los sumos sacerdotes y a los escribas del
pueblo y les preguntó dónde tenía que nacer el Mesías. Ellos le
contestaron: “En Belén de Judá, porque así lo ha escrito el profeta: Y
tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, no eres en manera alguna la menor entre
las ciudades ilustres de Judá, pues de ti saldrá un jefe, que será el
pastor de mi pueblo, Israel”.
Entonces Herodes llamó en secreto a los magos, para que le
precisaran el tiempo en que se les había aparecido la estrella y los
mandó a Belén, diciéndoles: “Vayan a averiguar cuidadosamente qué
hay de ese niño y, cuando lo encuentren, avísenme para que yo
también vaya a adorarlo”.
Después de oír al rey, los magos se pusieron en camino, y de pronto
la estrella que habían visto surgir, comenzó a guiarlos, hasta que se
detuvo encima de donde estaba el niño. Al ver de nuevo la estrella, se
llenaron de inmensa alegría. Entraron en la casa y vieron al niño con
María, su madre, y postrándose, lo adoraron. Después, abriendo sus
cofres, le ofrecieron regalos: oro, incienso y mirra. Advertidos
durante el sueño de que no volvieran a Herodes, regresaron a su
tierra por otro camino.
