Online Giving Stewardship from Home Like many individuals, families, and organizations, this time has put a particular strain on our finances. We have had to make some tough decisions as we re-budget to best use our newly limited resources. And while we have made progress, we still have work to do to sustainably operate without a live Sunday collection. We know that many of you are similarly hurting or are otherwise financially vulnerable. However, for those of you who are able, please maintain or resume your usual giving, either by submitting it directly to the parish office or through our website at https://nativity-mn.org/online-giving. And, for those who have the means, please consider making a special emergency gift at this time. Please contact Joyce at the Parish Office at (651) 696-5436 if we can be of further assistance.

From The Hip Return to Limited Public Mass | Wed., June 3, 8:15am Dear Brothers and Sisters, Grace and peace to each of you. This Pentecost Sunday offers us a rich opportunity to reflect on Our Lord’s ongoing mission on earth that continues even as Jesus has returned to the right hand of the Father, his invitation to share in the life of the Spirit here and now, and our ultimate end in heaven. It is with that in mind that I am pleased to announce that we will return to limited public Mass here at Nativity of Our Lord beginning this Wednesday, June 3. As you know, the well-being of our community members — body and soul — is our number one priority, and in particular the most vulnerable. This led us to cancel all our in-person events, move school students to a distance-learning model, and suspend public liturgies. And it is with that same well-being in mind that we plan to return to public liturgy. The Holy Eucharist is indeed the source and summit of our Christian faith and thus we have continued to offer the Mass here at Nativity throughout the stay-at-home orders, live-streamed to your homes. Even as we have been separated, the Mass is real and efficacious and an important sign of the ongoing work of salvation in those who participate immediately, as well as our Catholic brothers and sisters everywhere else. Now that we are able to invite low-risk parishioners back to public Mass, it is important to remember that even as we ask our vulnerable, higher-risk sisters and brothers to remain at home, that we are all still united in the Eucharist — and the same Holy Spirit is working in and through each and every one of us. No, things will not be back to “normal” anytime soon, even with a return to public liturgy. Mass will look different: we will ask you to register before coming and limit your registration (one daily Mass per week and one Sunday Mass per month) to allow for all interested parishioners the opportunity to attend in a timely manner. There will be mandatory safety protocols in place throughout our liturgies, including safe distancing of households and wearing face coverings. We will also abstain from congregational singing, as singing expels more respiratory particles than speaking. But therein lies the beauty of our Christian faith: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is not fazed by these necessary — and, yes, sometimes awkward — safety measures, and neither should we be. In particular, here’s what will not change: we will continue to reach out to our high-risk parishioners, offering spiritual and practical care. We will continue to live-stream Mass daily at 8:15am.

Faith Formation Holy Spirit Study | Mondays through August 10 The Wild Goose is a 14-episode series on the Holy Spirit presented by nationally renown author and speaker, Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR. Through beautiful film-making and compelling teaching, you’ll be invited into a more profound, life-giving relationship with the Holy Spirit. Join us on Mondays through August 10 from 6:30-8:00pm through Zoom video conferencing. All videos can also be viewed at Formed.org, so there is no need to worry if you need to miss a session (or start mid-stream!). Contact Katie Schaitberger, Director of Faith Formation, at [email protected] or (612) 367-7877 to register and receive the Zoom link. There is no cost to participate, and non-Nativity members are welcome!

Liturgy When will Masses begin and which Masses will be offered? Beginning Wednesday, June 3, we will offer the following public liturgies:

Monday-Saturday | 8:15am Sunday | 8:15am, 11am, and 5pm (Saturday’s 5pm Lord’s Day vigil Mass will continue to

be private and live-streamed.) What is required and recommended for Mass attendance? Mass attendance will be limited to 24 households, which in this case means those currently living at the same address. Interested parishioners can register for one daily Mass per week and one Sunday Mass per month via SignUpGenius (visit https://nativity-mn.org/phase2 for the link) or by calling the parish office at (651) 696-5401 beginning Monday at 9am. Congregants should provide proof of registration upon arrival as well as a face covering to wear throughout the liturgy.

Stay home if you feel sick or have flu-like symptoms, especially a fever, cough, or shortness of breath.

If attending Mass might otherwise put you or others at risk, whether because of your age (65+), medical reasons, or close proximity to someone who is ill, please stay home.

Remain at least six feet away in all directions from others outside your own household.

Face coverings (covering nose and mouth) will be required. Very young children (two years or younger) and those with conditions that prevent them from wearing a face covering are exempt.

What will be different about the liturgies?

Upon arrival, congregants will wait outside the main Stanford doors to be ushered into the church.

Ushers will escort you to specifically designated seating areas.

Communal holy water basins have been emptied. Hymnals, missalettes, and other shared items will be

removed from common areas. There will be no congregational singing or choirs, since

singing increases the risk of spread. The Sign of Peace has been suspended. There will be no communal collection during Mass. We

invite you to donate online at https://nativity-mn.org/online-giving. You can also submit envelopes at the registration table.

Communion will be distributed on the way out of Mass, without the Precious Blood.

What about the Sunday obligation? The Sunday obligation remains suspended. Furthermore, if the idea of attending a large Mass makes you uneasy, consider attending a daily Mass, where there are typically smaller congregations, or simply stay home. (You can also check the SignUpGenius ahead of time to see how many people are expected to attend.) For a link to liturgy registration, as well as for infographics and further pertinent, up-to-date information, visit https://nativity-mn.org/phase2.

From The Hip Return to Limited Public Mass | Wed., June 3, 8:15am (Continued from the previous page) The Lord’s Day vigil Mass on Saturdays at 5pm will remain private so we can live-stream it while preserving the beautiful music and singing with cantor and organ. Private Communion will continue for those who cannot or choose not to join us at Mass. And all Catholics continue to be exempt from any obligation to attend Mass throughout the pandemic. Please familiarize yourself with the further details at right which pertain to the public liturgy protocols here at Nativity, many of which are specifically passed on to us by the Archdiocese. We are confident that by following these protocols we can best ensure the health and safety of all of our congregants. To do so, we will need many dedicated (low-risk) volunteers to help. Please contact Patrick Henning, Director of Liturgy and Music, at [email protected] or (651) 696-5430 to volunteer. Finally, please join me in prayer for those suffering from COVID-19 and any other illness, those who care for them, those suffering other ill effects of the pandemic including isolation and financial vulnerability, our leaders in government and healthcare working to keep us safe and healthy, and in particular for those who have died. I look forward to seeing you again soon in the pews, and especially to an eventual return to a time when we can again pack our church to full capacity and worship together in one voice and heart. In God’s love and peace, Fr. Patrick Hipwell, Pastor

Mass from Home Video Mass How-To Watching a video stream of Mass is new to most of us. Fr. Nick has some ideas on how to make the best out of an imperfect situation. Visit https://nativity-mn.org/online-liturgies to watch a video from him, as well as to find our upcoming live-streamed Masses and those already recorded. Live-streamed and archived Masses are also available on both our parish website homepage (https://nativity-mn.org/) as well as on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/NativityStPaul/). Other Broadcasts Mass is also on Relevant Radio, 1330 AM on Sundays at 9am, with Daily Mass at 12pm. Sunday Mass is on local TV at 11am on KSTC-TV/45. Finally, EWTN (Comcast cable ch. 291) has daily Mass at 7am, 11am, 6pm, and 11pm, and is rebroadcast on channels 14.2, 14.4, and 14.5. Spiritual Communion Whenever anyone is unable to receive Holy Communion — for any number of reasons — we can make a “Spiritual Communion” by praying that Our Lord would come to us when we cannot receive him substantially. We pray this one during our online Masses:

Jesus, I believe you are truly present in the Most Holy Eucharist. I wish, my Lord, to receive you with the purity, humility, and devotion with which your most holy Mother received you, with the spirit and the fervor of the saints. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as being already there. Amen!

Archdiocese COVID-19 Prayer Support Wanted Parishioners across the Archdiocese are invited to prayerfully support those who are suffering most intensely, usually in sterile isolation, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Text “archspm-anointing” to 55321 or visit http://eva.us/archspm-anointing to receive a text each time a COVID-19 Anointing Corps Priest is dispatched to give the Last Rites. Upon receipt of the text, those in this ministry commit to take a moment to pray:

One Our Father for the patient who is in danger of death, as they prepare to meet our Heavenly Father face-to-face;

One Hail Mary for the patient’s family and friends, asking the Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Sorrows, to intercede to comfort them; and

One Glory Be in thanksgiving for the priest and for his protection, as well as the medical team attending to the patient.

For more ways to pray for those affected by COVID-19, visit www.archspm.org/covid19prayers.

Teens Biggest Youth Night Ever | Sundays at 6:50pm For the past couple of months, our teens have joined over 10,000 (!) other young people from across the country for an online youth night. We’ve played games together, joined in worship together, learned from a brilliant Catholic speaker, and prayed together. This Sunday, we’re doing it again: new speaker, new worship leader, same time. Like usual, the broadcast starts at 7pm, but we plan to log in at 6:50pm to make sure we’re ready when it starts. And parents, if you’re not busy, you are invited to watch along with us — it’s worth it! Visit https://nativity-mn.org/youthministry for more information, including directions to join a video group chat with other Nativity of Our Lord teens. Or just contact Katie Schaitberger at [email protected] for the Zoom link. See you Sunday night!

Holy Communion Communion By Appointment | Monday-Friday, 4:30-5:30pm While Catholics have no obligation to receive Holy Communion while the pandemic persists, there is a great hunger for the Eucharist in our parish, and rightfully so. And so we continue to offer private appointments for registered parishioners to receive Holy Communion, along with those currently living at their same address, particularly for those who cannot or choose not to come to Mass as we resume public liturgy. Visit https://nativity-mn.org/communion for more information, and to find the link to the sign-up form. You can also call the parish office at (651) 696-5401 to request a timeslot, one per household. If you are not yet registered as a parishioner, you can do so by contacting the parish office. Finally, if you are unable to leave your home or come to the rectory, let us know, and we’ll figure out an alternative.
