Mrs. Judith Roberts, a published poet and a Nativity grandparent, works with the Writer's Place in Kansas City. For the past several years she has comes to the 7th and 8th grade English and Language Arts (ELA) class and assists the students with writing poetry. These poems are submitted to the Writer's Place for the "In Our Own Words" competition. In the fall, 0 students from both the 7th and 8th grade are invited to a work-shop with local poets. Our 7th and 8th grad-ers compete against local high schools and always do very well. Nativity gets extra spots at the workshop because of the cali-ber of writing from our students. We are thankful to Mrs. Roberts for giving of her time and talent to Nativity of Mary School!

A prayer from St. Thomas More: “Grant me, O Lord, good digestion, and also something to digest. Grant me a healthy body, and the necessary good humor to maintain it. Grant me a simple soul that knows to reassure all that is good and that doesn’t frighten easily at the sight of evil, but rather finds the means to put things back in their place. Give me a soul that knows not boredom, grumblings, sighs and laments, nor excess of stress, because of the obstructing thing call “I”. Grant me, O Lord, a sense of humor. Allow me the grace to be able to take a joke to discover in life a bit of joy, and to be able to share it with others.”

November 3, 2019 - The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s reading from the book of Wisdom presents an image of a patient God who rebuke[s] offenders little by little (Wisdom 12:2), an image endorsed by the psalmist, singing of how the LORD is slow to anger and of great kindness, and compassionate toward all his works (Psalm 145:8, 9). The crowd with Jesus, however, grumbles when they see Jesus’s kindness and compassion extended to Zacchaeus, who was not just a tax collector, but the chief tax collector --a title that surely emphasizes his standing as a sinner to be scorned. In the second reading, Saint Paul urges the Thessalonians to be worthy of God’s calling, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you (2 Thessalo-nians 1:12); such people, unlike the crowd in the Gospel, would rejoice at Zacchaeus’s determination to change his life after encountering Jesus. ZACCHAEUS, COME DOWN QUICKLY Why do good things happen to bad people? Does this question strike you as odd? Aren’t we usually struggling with the bad things that happen to good people? True enough, but when good things happen to others, especially those we con-sider undeserving, it can seem natural to grumble. How do some people always seem to get away with it, while we spend our lives trying to act as God would want? As a tax collector, Zacchaeus cheated and got rich off of his own peo-ple. Why does Jesus want to be so nice to him? It’s just not fair! TODAY I MUST STAY AT YOUR HOUSE This problem of good things for bad people can cause as much distress as the problem of bad things happening to good people. Both touch on one of the deepest mysteries of human existence: Is the universe fair? Is God just? This is what is making the crowd grumble about Jesus favoring Zacchaeus. Why is Jesus befriending such a sinner? This is the third such complaint about Jesus in Luke’s Gospel (see Luke 5: 27 33 and 5:25 15). However, the encounter with Zacchaeus is different. In the other accounts, Jesus responds to his critics himself, but here, it is Zacchaeus who speaks up. Not only does Zacchaeus announce compensation for those he has cheated, he vows to give away half of his goods to the poor. At this point in the Gospel, Jesus is traveling to Jerusalem, where he knows he will be put to death. No one else that Jesus meets on this journey has responded as readily as Zacchaeus to his summons--first, to come down from the tree, then to come down from his wealthy lifestyle and the corruption that supported it. Although he did not travel to Jerusalem with Jesus, Zacchaeus clearly understood the demands of discipleship. This story gives us a hint as to why good things might happen to bad people: it is God’s patience, with Zacchaeus and with us as well, as God awaits our response, for us to become the disciples God is calling us to be.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Every week, some treasures from our tradition are shared here. Where does all this history come from? The history of God’s people of prayer is always coming to light, mostly because scholars have dedicated their lives to research. They translate and ponder prayers and songs; explore the places used for worship; look at the vessels, books, and vest-ments; and read works from legal documents to letters and diaries. In the 1930s, Hitler’s rush to arm Germany closed seminaries as priests and seminarians alike were drafted into service. One professor, Father Josef Jungman, forced from his classroom, spent the war years in an Austrian library. His careful work disclosed much of what we know of the history of the Mass. His great work, The Mass of the Roman Rite, de-scribes the evolution of Eucharistic celebration and inspired generations of scholars to explore a tradition surprisingly rich and varied. It was said of him that he had a command of the past that cast new light on the present, and opened up a clear direction to the future. His contributions to the Second Vatican Council helped shape the way that we worship today. At the end of his life, in 1975, his studies completed, he told a friend that he was waiting patiently for the Lord’s knock at the door to take him to the heavenly banquet.
