a wealth of wildlifeThe brown bear, the wolf, the lynx and the wolverine all thrive in the national park. Beavers and their dams can be seen along many of the park’s streams. Swans, cranes, geese and many waterfowl, grouse and birds of prey inhabit the park. The viewing tower at Teretinniemi is a good place to watch birds.
The area around Lake Suomunjärvi was first settled in the 17th century. An old barn belonging to the Suomu for-est ranger’s estate, established in 1860, today houses the Suomu Nature Informa-tion Hut.
Hiking in PatvinsuoThe park has about 80 km of well marked trails, including 20 km of duckboard trails. The most popular trail is the Suomunkierto Trail (15 km around). Three shorter nature trails, Kuusipolku, Mäntypolku and Lakkapolku (3-4,5km), are also suitable for children. Hikers can also follow trails leading from the park to the longer Bear Trail (138km) and Wolf Trail (90km).
