Hard facts from stage 1• More than 1200 registered entrants on the

competition web• 237 BIM deliveries

• Vide range of quality• More than 100 considered to hold good quality• Most of them were “fixable”, so only a few could not be used

• Both numbers and quality are approx as expected

• The architects in the world ARE ready to BIM!!!

Appendix 5.6 Digital 3D model and BIM requirements

”In this project a simple digital 3D building information model (BIM) in open BIM standards/formats is a main deliverable. This implies that the competitor entrants must use an object oriented design tool that supports the specified open standard in this Architectural competition.

No traditional, physical model (cardboard etc) must be delivered”

Purpose of the BIM requirements

Avoid 500 physical models…

Visualization

o Conceptual built forms, line of sight assessment from predefined and arbitrary set points and axes. Models was placed in the city context according to geo-referenced 3D points and included in a larger, 3D GIS model of the competition area and surrounding area.

Generic area quantities measurements

o Programmed vs. proposed/modeled/designed. Gross areas for space/zone objects and footprint of external walls was extracted from the models to ensure that the main functions’ area requirements were fulfilled in the design proposals.

Energy performance

o Areas/quantities measurements of the building envelop, external walls, doors, windows, roof slabs, cantilevered floor slabs etc.

• Geo referencing• The receiving ModelServer was not “of the shell” and

had to be made in parallell… • How would the architects (worldwide) react to BIM

requirements and how much recourses would it require in support?•We expected “a variety” of competence in the area and

accordingly BIM quality – therefore an architect version of the evaluation tool was made available so they could do their own quality assurance (and “quick fix”)

Site object, inclusive existing buildingsMade available for the Architects on open BIM format. Local origin was set, and the site was correctly oriented (so we could put the “piece of pay” back in the city context geo-referenced) The project origin (Northing (N)/Easting (E)) EUREF89 596.550,000/6.642.730,000 has been set to 0/0, and Z=0 at local City of Oslo sea level.

Some test results• Allplan 2008

Problem with the correct project structure > The building structure not include a site – there is currently an IFC export error preventing the site to be properly exported. Therefore the Allplan Drawing File that contains the imported 3Dsite geometry is not assigned

• ArchiCAD 12 - Passed!• AutoCAD Architecture 2009

When export the site correct as IFC site the z axis will be shifted by some meters, when export the site as a story, then the site is geometrically correct, but became a story Difficult / impossible to export the space number / IfcSpace.Name correctly, the space number / IfcSpace.Name is always the Style name.

• Bentley Architecture V8 Problems with the IFC export… Export Test Spaces : OK >> but tricky export : TriForma IFC Export, Tab Settings > select: Generate 3D Spaces from 2D Spaces.

Some test results• Revit Architecture 2009

3D site is not visible in plan views only in 3D. Problem with the project structure : two additional IfcBuildingsStoreys were exported > these additional stories SITE and 01 are empty and not correct. The 3D shape of the site is not exported as IFC site with 3D geometry, but as an additional IfcBuildingElementProxy. The reuse of the provided spaces is only possible in the same storey, if you try to move them in a different storey the GUID and the space number changed (only possible by cut & paste)

• Vectorworks 20093D site was not imported & the two existing buildings were not imported, it was only possible to import the spaces. There is a bug with the space name & number, both were changed during the IFC import, number became name and name became number.

• QTO – calculation, CO2 emission• Energy analysis• Security & circulation (zones)• Net space height• MEP – spaces (and bounding box)

Lessons learned• Yes it was a good idea• Architects (world wide) learned a few lessons about

BIM (And the capabilities of their applications)• A few complaints, but less than expected.

• “Simple” requirements are not always met…• Still it gave added value

• Visualization - volume site lines, axis • Area check, gross/net area (placement of functions)• Anonymity
