WELCOME MESSAGENATIONAL HISTORY DAY - KOREA 2013

Welcome to all of our guests for National History Day 2013.

We hope over the next few days that you continue to have your interest in history sparked. The significant number of hours you have dedicated to your papers, presentations and films will hopefully provide you with insight not only into your topic, but also the process you have undergone. Your ability to research, analyze and communicate your understandings are skills that not only prepare you well for college, but also prepare you well to be true global citizens. Over the course of the day please take the opportunity to see some of the work of your peers, meet some historians from other schools and if you have a chance, thank our organizers Mr and Mrs Hurt as well as your judges. Through the dedication of our volunteers I'm very confident you will have a great day.

On behalf of Seoul International School and our Headmaster, Dr. Kim welcome to National History Day. Last year our school hosted this event for the first time in Korea and sent finalists on to the regional competition in Shanghai.

Building on the tremendous success of last year’s event, we have now gained regional status for National History Day in Korea and local finalists can advance directly to the National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland.

Again this year, National History Day is primarily the result of the efforts of two members of the SIS staff, Tony and Shanna Hurt. We thank them for their dedication, vision and commitment on behalf of all who participate.

National History Day provides students with a unique opportunity to engage in historical research and create experiences and presentations “ to inform the

present and shape the future”. 1 We hope that everyone who participates today leaves with a better understanding of the power of history to inform and improve the human condition.

Thank you students for the thoughtful, engaging and inspiring original works you’ve created, to our judges for their wisdom and insight and to our supportive staff for helping to make the day such a great success.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERNATIONAL HISTORY DAY - KOREA 2013


DR. CATHY GORNDr. Cathy Gorn is the executive director of National History Day, Inc. (NHD) and an adjunct professor of history at the University of Maryland at College Park. Dr. Gorn has made numerous presentations on history education at forums for historians and teachers, including the National Council for the Social Studies, the American Historical Association, and the Organization of American Historians. Her publications on teaching history to young people have appeared in several professional journals. In addition, Dr. Gorn has served as editor for more than 25 history curriculum guides and has directed 15 national institutes for teachers of history and social studies. She serves on the White House Historical Association Board of Trustees, the Education Committee of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and the Education Committee of the American Bar Association. Dr. Gorn received her B.A. from Kent State University in 1982, and her Ph.D. in history from Case Western Reserve University 1992.

Dr. Gorn joined National History Day in 1984 when the organization was still based in Cleveland, Ohio,

and was in its infancy as a national endeavor. Dr. Gorn has held positions of increasing responsibility within the organization. As a member of a small core national office staff, her efforts have fundamentally shaped the evolution of National History Day from a series of contests to a full-fledged, highly acclaimed national academic program.
