Brief Introduction
During 2015, NCTU Student SPIE Chapter responded to the
“International Year of Light”. We organized and hosted many activities mainly focused on outreach programs for not only children but also students (college, high school, and junior high school). Except the interviews and hosting the visitors or scholars, all events are listed in chronological orders in the following, and the details of events are in the main report. Kickoff Meeting – November 2014 Introduction of Photonics Technology in classes – 2015 Photonics Week – April 2015 Outreach with National Science Museum – April 2015 SPIE Conference (Optics + Photonics) – August 2015 Preparing event: Lab tour for student (National Palace Museum in Taipei) Publish science for children (The Presbyterian Church In Taiwan) Next Outreach with National Science Museum 2016 Photonics week
Kickoff Meeting NCTU
November 2014 19 members
We hosted a Kickoff Meeting to let the new member get familiar with
each other and discuss the new schedule of NCTU student SPIE Chapter in 2015. Not only we will hold the activates as usually, but we decided to
celebrate the International year of light by holding one more outreach activities with National Science Museum to spread the sprits. We have a
good discussion of the schedule of 2015.
Fries, making friends, and setting our 2015 schedule!
Introdction of Photonics Technonly in Classes NCTU
10 members, 60 participants
This activity is nearly our tradition, outreach for undergraduate students. In the class of fundamental electro-optics course for the non-engineering undergraduate students (lead by Prof. Po-Tsung Li), we demonstrate popular science and explain reasons behind. In the course, we divided all the students into two groups, learned from the demonstrating experiments and played laser chesses, and then the two
groups took turns in the next class. The non-engineering undergraduate students were so impressed by
the lives-related demonstrating experiments, and the most of the experiments kits were daily necessities, such as refraction in a plastic box with laser pan to mimic the fiber transportation, the birefringence of plastic, the liquid crystal display by hand made simple pixel liquid crystal cell, telescope and projector, and holography and its application in security labels.
The positive feedbacks from the attending students and Prof. Li gave us lots of motivation in such a meaningful outreach program. Prof. Li invited the Student SPIE Chapter to get involved into the similar fundamental course in the next year.
Photonics Week NCTU
April, 2015 15 members, 200 participants
In 2015 April, our department held the oral admission test for
selecting the freshman. And our department organized Tin Ka Pin Photonics Week with undergraduate students and NCTU Student SPIE Chapter. In this week, our goal was educate non-engineering student and even student in high school with basic photonics knowledge through activities. Besides, we also would like to let the graduate student learn professional skill while holding activities. Therefore, we held Optical lab tour, Play-with-light Exhibition, Optics-related Software, and laser chess competition. We invited the elemental school and high school teacher bring their students to NCTU. During the Optical lab tour, we are impressive by those children who are curiosity about optical phenomena and they ask some sharp question. For Play-with-light Exhibition, the students from different lab volunteer to be responsible for boots. We demo not only the basic optical phenomena but also the application in the state of art, such as light field camera and Li-Fi. As for the optics-related courses are CodeV, TechWiz, and LabView. We invited the company give us lectures (1~2 days) for the students who needs to learn
software tool in the future. In the Photonic Week, we hope to bring the knowledge with joy to
people. The attending children were enlighten by simple demonstration, and the student responsible for organizing enjoyed in this week and learned professional software skills.

Outreach with National Science Museum NCTU + National Science Museum in Taichung
April 4, 2015 15 members, 150 participants
For promoting “light” to those elementary school students, we held
education DIY courses, “Magic of light and shadow” and “Invisible cloak”, and the interactive public science lecture: “Principle of 3D images” in National Museum of Natural Science on the weekend. We introduced light speed, reflection, refraction, and total internal reflection by interesting slides. We combined famous cartoons, beautiful pictures, Q&A and some little stuff for rewarding them to trigger their interests.
Although they cannot understand completely, they were really happy from that course. After the introduction, we start the DIY part. There were two DIY items, one is magic saving money box, and the other is invisible cloak. Both of the DIY items showed the phenomenon of reflection, refraction and total internal reflection. The best thing is to see the kid’s face with amazing emotion when they finished it. In that course, we also showed the laser chess (Khet) to them. They played and felt reluctant to leave when their parents came to pick them up. We believe that this course indeed triggers kid’s interests with “light”.
Planning Ahead
SPIE conference (Optics + Photonics) Aug, 2015
Thanks to SPIE for the officer travel grant. Our officers (Yu-Jen Wang
and Chia-Ming Chang) went to Optics+Photonics 2015 for academic presentation and attending SPIE leadership days. During the leadership activities, such as the lectures and discussions in SPIE-related cases study,
Fun with Photonics DIY
Lecture of Public Science
Invisible cloak
we learn the difference of culture when dealing with a same situation, and we also learn what a good leader is in thinking and acting.
In the Poster session, we exchanged information with other student chapter. Some of student chapter shows the poster with their activities. There are two activities we are interesting after the internal discussion with NCTU’s student member. One is the Meeting master in coffee hour. They invited the elder or well experienced person talk with students in casual coffee hours, and students can pop out question in anytime. We think the activity is so great and helpful for students. The other activity is the laser tag game. With safety control, we think laser tag game are fun and can draw lots of attention for advertising the activities of our chapter.
In summary of SPIE conference, we think it is meaningful for us to attend the leadership day. We not only meet with new friends but also learn from each other. We thanks the opportunities provides by SPIE.

Interviews with Masters/Visitors NCTU
There are many scholars and visitors coming to NCTU. Taking
advantage of that, we have lots of chances to interviews with them. Cooperating with our department, NCTU student SPIE chapter prepared questions regarding with masters, such as the earlier life experience in academic field, core value, and the passion on research. We collected the responses from masters and then delivered their messages through the season journal of our department. In 2015, the precious visitor includes Prof. Zumer, Prof. Nakamura (Nobel Prize Laureate), Prof. Shu Chien, Prof. Simon Sze, Prof. Francis Yu, and the SPIE digital library director – Marybeth Manning.
In Summary In this year, NCTU Student SPIE Chapter celebrate/responded to the
“International Year of Light”. We organized and hosted many activities mainly focused on outreach programs for not only children but also students (college, high school, and junior high school). We recruited more members; organized many outreach activities; made connections between students; and join the annual meeting in San Diego (2015 Optics+Photonics). We have a successful outreach program with National Science Museum, and we are keeping in touch with them for 2016 activities. We thanks for our advisor, including Prof. Hao-Chung Kuo, Prof. Ken-Yuh Hsu, Prof Yi-Hsin Lin, and Prof Chi-Wai Chow for providing constructive suggestions and giving supports in the internal meeting with our department. And we also thank the professors and visitors for the spare time with us and giving inspired guidance. We hope to extend the program and activities with other student chapters. Especially, the outreach programs need creative ideas and executors with passion. Finally, thanks SPIE Chapter for finical support and the passion with young students.
