To our Director of Libraries, Dr. Rina H. Diaron, our tireless event coordinator, Mrs. Pearl
Angelli F. Vicente, supportive library staff, library working scholars, my fellow Library and
Information Science students, visitors, and friends, Good Afternoon!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SLU Libraries, especially to our Director of
Libraries for allowing this partnership with our student organization, the Louisian Library and
Information Enthusiasts’ Society. I hope that this partnership would not cease for our experiences in
co-facilitating the various activities are unparalleled.
Our celebration of the 82nd National Book Week has come to its culmination, it was an
exhausting yet, nonetheless, an enjoyable week, indeed. But before ending this celebration, let us know
why we are celebrating it. Based on a proclamation issued by then Governor-General Frank Murphy in
1934, and amended by President Manuel L. Quezon in 1936, the National Book Week is an annual
celebration from November 24-30, organized by the Philippine Library Association, now the Philippine
Librarians Association, Inc. (PLAI), which intends to encourage reading and literacy among Filipinos
and to promote public libraries in the Philippines. This aimed at arousing the national interest in
reading good books and "designed to sell the public library to the community by focusing the attention
of the people on its resources and the extent and nature of its services."
This rationale then brings us to the question, why should we read? We read for
enjoyment. Reading stimulates our mind and engages our imagination. It causes us to think, imagine,
break-down and apply. We read for “Enablement.” Reading helps us to learn new skills, gain new
understanding, and change our mindset. Developing the habit of reading will allow us to continue to
grow and develop – enabling and empowering us to succeed in life. And of course, we read for
“Enlightenment.” Books can be an incredible source of insight and wisdom.
Reading has been at all times and in all ages a great source of knowledge. In today’s world of
information explosion--where there is a lot to know, and a lot to discover, the importance of reading
