JANUARY 2016 EMPOWERING. SERVING. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHURCH FACILITIES MANAGERS With the arrival of the New Year comes an excitement for new beginnings. Since early in my Christian walk, the New Year has been something very special to me. I look forward to forgetting about last year’s mistakes and failures, while pledging to start fresh with new goals, renewed enthusiasm. For me it’s all about “wiping the slate clean” and a new beginning. That being said, I want to encourage you to work toward being better at what you do in 2016; to remain teachable and up-to-date with your facility management abilities. Work to sharpen your skills as a manager of people and one who cares for God’s House. I challenge you to attend the National Conference this year in Charleston, SC (June 19 – 23). A core Conference objective is to make sure that you walk away “full” from the gathering. Throughout the week we’ll offer spiri- tual food so that you can grow in your relationship with the Lord, along with professional knowledge. We’ll eat great food all week long and do our best to “serve up” outstanding learning opportu- nities from the topics you’ve requested. You will also enjoy a full plate of fellowship while rubbing shoulders with the top men and women from our profession. I recall the first conference I attended in 1997 (Estes Park, CO). I had no clue what to expect. All I knew was that my boss heard about it at the NACBA and told me to sign up. Almost all of the attendees had their wives with them so I called my wife and asked her to come right away (only an hour from where we lived). I learned a ton of things at that conference; information we began implementing immediately at our church. We learned about a great computer calendar program (still in use!) and the efficiency of carpet tiles (done soon after during new construction). Both of these nuggets of information came from that first conference. Post conference my wife Nili and I could not stop talking about the great men and women we’d met – really a whole new group of “Instant Friends”, people you feel like you’ve known for years. For the first time as a church facility manager, I didn’t feel alone! And Nili, as a spouse of a facility manager, experienced a complete sense of belonging. Almost 20 years later we are still close to many of those great people we met. We left refreshed and excited about the future knowing that we all had the same deep dedication to our jobs along with a shared commitment to learn, grow and encourage one another. Since that first conference we’ve met many more individuals and couples that have become “part of our NACFM family.” Attending a National Conference will leave you full of faith, full of fellowship, and full of excitement to be a better follower of Christ and a better church facility manager. It’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced before! See you there! Blessings, 2016 Goals 1. NACFM Conference 2. 3. 4. ... and a Happy New Year!! a message from nacfm president jeff galasso
