News and Notes

The Clark County Junior Livestock Committee has voted that 2018 pre-fair entries must list a specific, unique identification for each animal on forms due July 1st with no corrections after that date.

2017-2018 4-H Club Officer Training will be held November 9th at 6pm at St. Paul Church. All club officers and their parents, along with club leaders should plan to attend for a fun evening of training!

Project leader training for new and veteran 4-H project leaders will be held January 9th in the Courthouse meeting room.

November 4-H Council and Clark County Junior Livestock Committee Meetings

November 27th, we will be holding the Election of Officers for both the 4-H Council and the Clark County Junior Livestock Committee. The Shamrock 4-H Club is serving as the nominating committee. Additionally, we will also be voting on Fair Superintendents and continue revisions to the Fairbook for 2018. Please take the time to look through the Fairbook (still available on the Clark County Extension website) for corrections or revisions that need to be made and share those with your club’s representation. 4-H Council will meet at 6pm with the Clark County Junior Livestock Committee meeting to follow. We would like to thank the following folks for serving in leadership positions during the 2016-2017 4-H Year.

2017 Recognition Recognition for the 2016-2017 4-H Year will be November 12th at 5pm– location to be announced. All families are asked to attend to help us celebrate the accomplishments of our 4-H members, Cloverkids, and Volunteers over the last year. We will also be recognizing community supporters. This is also a great time to see what opportunities there are within 4-H, so whether you have submitted reports for recognition or are a new 4-H family, please join us!!! A pot luck will be held after the recognitions, so all families are asked to bring something to contribute. A slideshow featuring the many images of Clark County 4-H and it’s members over the last year will also be presented.

Recognition Judging Any 4-H parent, club leader or volunteer willing to help in evaluating recognition forms, secretary books and treasurer’s books, please bring your supper and join us on October 12th at 6pm in the Extension Office to help judge forms from another county. This is a great opportunity to see how clubs work in other counties and to learn what needs to be in the recognition forms.

Friends of the Troops November is the month we officially recognize and thank our military veterans and those currently serving. Here are a couple of simple projects that don’t take a lot of time or money, but benefits the men and women serving our country through the National Guard and Reserves who may not get a chance to be with their families during the upcoming holiday season. What a great way to share some holiday cheer! The preferred way for letters to be done is on an 8 1/2 x 11 paper or light cardstock, folded to 8 1/2 x 5 1/2. Each letter must be folded individually and sharply. The second accepted method is to use a purchased greeting card with (do not seal) or without envelope the sender’s name, club name and address should be on the back of each card in the left hand corner. If the surface is too slick to write on, use labels to put the information on. Contact the Extension Office before November 1st for all the details if this a community service your club is interested in. There is a cost of 25 cents per card.

Monthly MOVEment Activity: Community service ideas that involve MOVEment! Conduct a bicycle rodeo to help children learn about bicycle safety. Organize a safe walk to school event. Assist an afterschool, little league, or other sports program for younger children. Clean yards of neighbors who cannot do it themselves. Hold a sports contest. Teach others about a sport you enjoy and know a lot about. Clean-up trash at a community event or county fair. Clean up a vacant lot.

Clover Kids Corner: Toasted Pumpkin Seeds Don’t toss those pumpkin seeds! Roast them to make a quick and crispy snack. Supplies: -Pumpkin seeds from your jack-o-lantern -Olive oil -Salt -Baking pan with raised edges Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350° Fahrenheit. 2. Separate the seeds from the pumpkin. Rinse and pat them dry with a paper towel. Put the seeds in

the baking pan. 3. Drizzle olive oil over the pumpkin seeds and then sprinkle them with salt. Stir the seeds to coat them

with oil, then spread them evenly over the bottom of the baking pan. 4. Cook for 10 minutes, then remove the pan from the oven and stir the seeds. Return to the oven for

another 10 minutes until the seeds are golden brown. 5. Let the seeds cool, then transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the extra oil. 6. Experiment by adding other spices to see what flavor you like the best!
