THE BOATHOUSE REIMAGINED
THE BOATHOUSE REIMAGINEDThe brief required a rebuild of the existing Studley Park Boathouse in Kew along the Yarra River.
In a city of cycling and coffee, the site has become used primarily by Melburnians pursuing ‘active lei-sure’, rather than the families and young courting couples of the past who used the river for a Sunday afternoon row.
The resulting design is a low slung, streamlined building that references the past in it’s traditional form, but also looks to the future by minimizing its environmental impact through location choice, orientation, materiality and passive shading. It is a boathouse reimagined for the twenty first century, catering to present-day users and their contemporary requirements.

THE MERRI CREEK INTERVENTION
Merri Creek is an environmental sanctuary in close proximi-ty to Melbourne’s CBD. Users of the site are predominantly pedestrians and cyclists, using its pathways for exercise pur-poses in a natural setting. The brief revolved around creat-ing an intervention to enhance users’ experience of the site; using parametric design through Rhino 3D’s Grasshopper Plug-in to achieve this.
The Johnson Street Bridge cuts through the site and is one of the only examples here where the environment is over-powered by a manmade object. The design response there-fore aimed to turn user focus back to nature through the implementation of sculpture to repurpose and revitalize the underside of the bridge.
A reflective aluminum arrangement of hanging panels reflects the surrounding environment and camouflages the bridge. These panels are perforated based on algorithms that mimic vegetation and undulate in the wind.
The new addition to the existing structure allows users to have an experience of design without having to vary or change their interaction with the site.

STAACSENSORY THERAPY ALL ABILITY CENTRE
Growing up with an autistic sister has given me an in-sight into her experience of the world. It has inspired me to think about how her quality of life could be improved, and what the role of design could be in facilitating this.
The looseness of the brief allowed for an open inter-pretation of what kind of hotel and business headquar-ters could be built in West Melbourne. As a lot of major autistic therapy and respite centres are located rurally, there is a serious need for a centralized location that the site can provide.
People with autism have a tunnel vision view of the world around them, and the design responds to this specific user group and their needs with a focus on an inward and tactile emphasis. The floors are arranged vertically to accommodate the required building func-tions and make navigation through each straight for-ward. They also enable the utilization of roof space for therapy and provide passive shading.
The overall asymmetrical arrangement is intended to be noticed by onlookers. Perhaps by being noticed, the needs of its users will be too. For too long the different-ly abled have been ignored in our community, and by being striking and bold, STAAC cannot be ignored. It can assist in meeting some of the needs of these indi-viduals, fostering a sense of community and enabling them to flourish.

This project revolved around turning existing buildings into sustainable design. This was done through changing of orientation and shading, openings and cross ventilation, materiality and ser-vices choices. It also included how each of these parts fit together, and how these are used to design a passive residential building.
The embodied energy was calculated, and First Rate used to understand how environmentally friendly each iteration of the original structure was.

CROSS VENTILATION CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH A NUMBER OF WINDOW AND DOOR OPENINGS, PARTICULAR-LY TO THE SOUTH. THIS WILL HELP TO INCREASE THE PASSIVE CAPABILITIES OF THE HOUSE IN REGARDS TO COOLING
EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE CLADDING WAS CHOSEN WITH ADDITIONAL INSULATION DUE TO ITS HIGH THERMAL PROPERTIES, REDUCING HEATING DEMANDS. IT IS ALSO 100% RECYCLABLE AND MADE FROM 98% AIR, ELIMINAT-ING THE USE OF EXCESS MATERIAL
CELLULOSE INSULATION WAS CHOSEN AS IT IS MADE FROM 100% RECYCLED PAPER AND IS BLOWN IN. THIS REDUCES THE POSSIBILITY OF THERMAL BRIDGING AND HEAT LOSS, MAINTAINING TEMPERATURES INSIDE MORE EASILY
