Relevance to SPoRT

LMAs are a major SPoRT activityFirst transition in 2003o Expanding to multiple networksProducing new training modulesDeveloping new visualizationsPreparing for AWIPS IIApply experience to GLM

Funded as part of GOES-R Proving Ground and Risk Reduction

Spring Program ParticipantPrepare forecasters for GLMo Created Pseudo-GLM (PGLM)o Provide training

o Contributions by partnerso Stand-in until GLM proxy ready

Why Use the PGLM?

PGLM is NOT a GLM proxyDemonstration toolo Work with select end userso Total lightning and GLM

learningo Easy to implementFocus of discussiono How to use lower resolutiono Develop operational planso Develop display toolsSPoRT can produce this 24/7

Maximum Flash Density (MFD) Product

Standard PGLM Flashes

17 Flashes

8 Flashes

Are these strengthening or weakening?

Can loop, use AWIPS II tool, OR

SUMMARY

• MFD is a fast “at a glance” trending tool• Compare 30 min MFD to current 2 min PGLM

• If PGLM > MFD, intensifying and vice versa• MFD gives 30 min overview of spatial extent which is

very useful for lightning safety• Designed based on feedback from forecasters

Spring Program Forecaster Feedbacko 70% responded PGLM was

“relatively easy” to interpreto 54% ranked PGLM an 8 or better

for using it in the futureo 63% ranked PGLM an 8+ for

importance – 94% with a 6+o Overwhelmingly support a trend

toolo Provided training updateso Impressed with situational

awarenesso Impressed with cloud-to-ground
