Narrative Elements and Techniques
Narrative Writing
•A narrative is a story containing specific elements that work together to create interest for not only the author but also the reader.
•This type of writing makes the reader feel as if her or she were part of the story, as if it was being told directly to him or her.
Sensory Imagery
•Using the five senses when writing a narrative helps the reader picture and feel what is going on.
•Describe what you see, hear, taste, touch, and smell to make your reader become involved in the story.
Choose one of the following topics:
A typical day in gym class
Lunch time cafeteria experience
Carnival fun
Trip to zoo
Figurative Language
MetaphorSimileHyperbolePersonification
*Easy devices to incorporate in narrative writing.
Dialogue
The use of dialogue makes the reader feel like he or she is a part of the story.
Complex Reflection
Towards the end of the essay, incorporate a moment of poignant reflection. This is the “aha” or epiphany moment of how you’ve been changed or grown from this experience.
Tone
Tone is the attitude of the piece. It may shift throughout the essay. Remember, a good narrative makes the reader feel during the read.
By the end of the essay, the reader should feel like he or she truly has a clearer sense of your personality.
