PRINCIPAL’S DESK Walawaani Njindiwan and welcome to Term 3.
We have had such a fabulous start to the term and have so many achievements to celebrate.
Our students have participated in a variety of events and have achieved some great successes. The first to be congratulated are Layton Moore and Chelsea Laurie. They were the recipients of the 2019 NAIDOC Youth of the Year. Geena Thomas and Jade Vlatkovic participated in the QUOTA Student of the Year. Geena has now qualify to go through to the regional final. Our highly successful Cattle Team won again at the Limousin Youth Show.
Our students have been involved in numerous sporting events, these include: representing the Sapphire Coast at The Shoalhaven Inter League AFL carnival, the Under 13s won their division, the Under 15s who came runners up and Under 17s who came third. The League Tag Country Championships team, held in Yass, also were runners up. Emily Hudson competed in the Under 18 Brumby’s National Rugby Union. Teams from Narooma and Canberra swim clubs competed at the Short Course Championships. Matt Driscoll and Phillip and Michael Davies competed at the Junior Surfing State Titles in Coffs Harbour and Kane Doull competed in the Grommet Surfing State Titles at Maroubra. Jonathon Harkins-McMahon is currently competing at the CHS AFL championships in Tasmania. Charlie Butcher and Eric Hills sang at a Moruya music festival and won second place. Our school netball team competed at the regional finals. Elli Beecham, Logan Allison and Sonny Dudley competed at the State Cross Country carnival, our school athletics team are competing at the Regional Athletics carnival this week.
Lastly, our RoboRebels team competed at the Duel Down Under in Sydney last weekend and won the judges award.
From this extensive list we can see why we have so much to celebrate. A massive congratulations to all students. I am even more thrilled that the students are coming to share their successes with me.
On the first day of term the staff had a fantastic Staff Development Day where all staff participated in relevant professional learning in data analysis, usage and feedback. The Executive took this learning one step further this week, training with an external consultative team to complete action plans. This is a big step forward towards the next phase for ultimate student achievement.
We have a number of Japanese students from Adachi High School being hosted by local families as part of a study tour program. This is a wonderful cultural opportunity for our students. There are a number of activities arranged for the visit including our SRC organised Aussie Treasure Hunt as part of their welcome.
We had two very successful and informative evenings with subject selections for 2020-21. Students’ subject choices are due in by Sunday 9 August. Any student who could not attend are required to see Mr Kenna to get their selection code to enter their choices.
Our Year 12 students started their trial examinations this week and I am impressed with their attitude and maturity and wish them well with their studies.
I am really looking forward to our NAIDOC Week Assembly on Friday 9 June and to the events during the following week.
Have an amazing fortnight and “Together We Soar”.
Fiona Jackson Principal
Good Luck Year 12 in your upcoming Trial Exams. We wish you all the best!!

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID @ NAROOMA HIGH SCHOOL
Our current Year 11 Students will be participating in the Mental Health First Aid workshops during Term
Three. One of Narooma High School’s counsellors, Steve Perry, will be conducting this initiative again in
2019. The Teen MHFA Course teaches high school students in Years 10 - 12, how to provide mental
health first aid to their friends. The course was developed in response to research indicating that young
people have a preference for sharing problems with peers. The course curriculum is based on a study
undertaken to determine the best actions a young person can undertake to support a peer with a mental
health problem. This program covers some of the modules required as part of the compulsory ‘Life Matters’
course which is being delivered by several staff at our school.
Here are some apps which may assist with improving knowledge about Mental Health:
Headspace
(Free for 10 days, then about $18.57 a month, iOS and Android)
Learn to meditate with this app’s guided sessions and mindfulness exercises. Scientific studies have
shown Headspace helps to reduce stress, and increase mindfulness and sense of wellbeing. Plus, the first
10 sessions are free.
Mood Coach
(Free, iOS)
This app aims to boost your mood through
‘behavioural activation’ , a popular CBT technique.
Created by the US Department of Veterans
Affairs, it helps you set goals, schedule positive
activities in your day plus track your mood and
progress. It also includes information about
depression.

MindShift CBT
(Free, iOS and Android)
Developed by Anxiety Canada, this app provides CBT–based tools to help you take charge of your anxiety.
It includes guided meditations, coping cards, a thought journal, goal setting, belief experiments, and tips for
creating healthy habits to set you up to manage anxiety better.
HeadGear
(Free, iOS and Android)
HeadGear was developed by researchers at the Black Dog Institute, the University of Sydney and UNSW.
It’s been designed particularly for men, and guides you through a 30–day mental fitness challenge using
behavioural activation and mindfulness.
MoodMission
(Free, iOS and Android)
Elegantly designed and colourful, MoodMission was created by two psychologists with support from
Monash and Swinburne Universities. Simply tell the app how you’re feeling and it provides you with five
‘missions’ to improve your mood, based on cognitive behavioural therapy.
Aboriginal students have been participating in a digital story telling (10 week) program to learn mulitmedia, lighting and tech skills. This program will continue to tell stories from our local area. Here are some pictures of the journey so far, but if you come along to our NAIDOC Formal Assembly on Friday 9 August at 10am you can watch the two small videos that are completed.
Technology Mandatory with Mr
Thornton
From Champion Bull to Champion Herdsman to best Maintain Team, Narooma High School had a great four days at the Limousin Youth Show. A huge thankyou to Mick and Mary Parsons, Anne and Warrick and Craig and Tamara Corby, we couldn't have done it without the support.
NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS
WITH DISABILITY (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School
Students with Disability (NCCD).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
· Year of schooling
· Category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
· Level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary,
substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
· Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
· Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
· Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational
outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for
the support of students. The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved
in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no
individual student will be able to be identified—the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured.
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal: https://www.nccd.edu.au
