PROJECT BACKGROUNDPROJECT BACKGROUNDThe client, North Moruya Industrial Estate, as a condition of the Development Consent issued by Eurobodalla Shire Council to client’s project manager JCL Development Solutions was required to rehabilitate a portion of Malabar Creek and riparian zone. This consent condition was imposed as a result of continuing degradation of the creek due to the previous unsuccessful attempts by the developer of the estate to control erosion, and after extensive coordination with DIPNR, now conservation and environment, and Eurobodalla Shire Council on extent of words required.

Cardno Willing were briefed and engaged by JCL to design a solution for rehabilitation works that would provide cost effective solution for the client, whilst ensuring that the completed structure would comply with all Council and DIPNR requirements.

These requirements for rehabilitation included works included consideration of:

• Aesthetics as a non engineered visually natural structure was mandated.

•A raft of environmental considerations for the protection and rehabilitation of natural flora and fauna.Performance of the structure up to the 1 in 100 year flood design flow rates.

Lifecycle cost of the structure from a maintenance perspective.

After coordination with Jim Olive of JCL, John Tilley from Cardno Willing considered that a design using the hoop strength of the Ecoflex units with a locally available dense granite to his specifications would fulfil all the interested parties requirements.

After extensive consideration by all the interested parties the project was approved to proceed.The Designer had particular regards to the unique properties of the Ecoflex Systems; namely:

Cost – The E.Bridge system is estimated to have reduced costs by around 20%.

Environmental – Low impact environmental considerations were a major factor in the selection of the E.Bridge System for this project.

Durability – The long term retention of the hoop strength of the Ecoflex units ensures a long life for the structure irrespective of vegetative cycles.

Sustainability – Ecoflex units were manufactured on site using locally obtained used truck tyres using a very low energy consumption process.

The design drawings are included in this case study for further information regarding this project.

The project involved construction of Ecoflex E-Rosion to the engineers design to create scour protection to the creek bed and erosion protection to the adjacent riparian zone.The final area was 2222 m2.

The construction of this Ecoflex E-Rosion area utilised approximately 100 Tonnes of used truck tyres all gained from the regional area. This is a contribution to greenhouse savings especially when compared to the environmental costs of virgin materials.
