NAPLESNaples, with its million inhabitants, is the third biggest city inItaly. Its position is spectacular – with the celebrated viewover the gulf of Naples and the extraordinary islands ofCapri, Ischia and Procida. The city is overlooked by Vesuvius,a vast volcano which erupted violently in 79 BC covering thecities of Pompei and Ercolano. Today, these cities – nowexcavated – bear witness to the splendours of the RomanEmpire. Vesuvio’s last eruption was in 1944.

THE CITY #THECITY#
The historic city of Naples was foundedabout 3,000 years ago as Partenope byTurkish and Greek merchants. Later, thesettlement took the name of Palepolis (theold city) and in 475 BC it became Neapolis, the new city. Under various phases offoreign rule, the city developed and grewand then became the capital of the mostimportant of the pre-unification states –the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The rulesof that Kingdom – the Bourbons –constructed a magnificent palace in nearbyCaserta and filled the city with historicconstructions of all kind. The historiccentre of Naples – with its splendid palacesand popular and lively working-classdistricts - is now under UNESCOprotections as world treasure. Naples alsoboasts an underground city, as well as itsfamous views from all parts of the city. Moreover, this hospitable city is marked bycontrasts and popular traditions – such asthe annual miracle whereby San Gennaro’s‘blood’ becomes liquid in front of the eyesof his followers. Two products have madeNaples famous throughout the world – thepizza – which is only one part of a richlocal cuisine, and music, as in the famouspopular song, O sole mio.
