Dear Friends,

We celebrated our 26th year of operation with the conclusion of the 2015-2016 fiscal year.

We are pleased to report that Forgotten Harvest rescued over 42 million pounds of food which might have otherwise gone to waste in our landfills. We maintained our 4-star Charity Navigator rating for efficiency and effectiveness for the ninth consecutive year. Our performance places us in the top 1% of nonprofit organizations throughout the country. Your donation dollars and direct engagement with our mission through 70,000 volunteer hours have been invested wisely to meet the needs of the one in six people facing food insecurity in metro Detroit.

This year marks a turning point for us. Leadership is in place, with the formation of a new executive team, that will transport us confidently into the future in the critical areas of finance, development and operations. Thoughtful change and innovation have always been critical components of our evolution and growth. Throughout the past fiscal year, we have asked ourselves a fundamental question: Are we the best Forgotten Harvest we can be? Our conclusion: We believe we can be even better and build upon what we envision as the untapped potential in our innovative food rescue model.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and the employees of Forgotten Harvest, we offer heartfelt thanks for your continued support and look forward to communicating our progress toward a vibrant future throughout the next fiscal year.

Sincerely,

Kirk Mayes Joyce Jenereaux Chief Executive Officer Chairman | Board of Directors

2015 – 2016 FORGOTTEN HARVEST ANNUAL REPORT

Fresh Perspectives For The FutureWe have looked to the future and believe we

are positioned to dramatically enhance our

organization’s unique food rescue model.

Over the next 12 to 18 months, with the help of

experts in the field of food access and supply

mapping, food distribution logistics and facility

assessment, we will evaluate every aspect of

our food rescue model. Our goal is to ensure

that Forgotten Harvest remains a significant

and viable force in the health and well-being of

our neighbors in need of fresh, nutritious food.

We believe it is possible to significantly

reduce food insecurity in metro Detroit and

incorporate objective measures of our progress

toward that end. Our goal is to distribute more

fresh food in closer proximity to people in need

of that food in a more effective manner while

continuing to maintain the levels of efficiency

and fiscal responsibility that have been

hallmarks of our organization.

Vision Statement

“ We envision communities that work together to end hunger…creating individual, neighborhood, economic, and environmental health”

Thanks to a generous contribution from our

presenting program sponsor, Delta Dental

of Michigan, and the support of several local

foundations and corporations, Forgotten Harvest

has developed three specialized programs

to ensure qualified families and thousands of

kids throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb

counties get the healthy foods they need and

access to information regarding dental care

programs available to them.

The Forgotten Harvest School Pantry Program distributes over a million meals a year to vulnerable families with early childhood programs.

The Forgotten Harvest Summer Lunch Program ensures kids will get healthy lunches during the summer. Last year, we distributed over 100,000 lunches to kids participating in summer programs.

The Forgotten Harvest Library Program. Throughout the school year and during the summer, we provide healthy snacks to children in need attending the Detroit Public Library reading, homework and tutoring programs.

Partnerships and initiatives that intelligently and efficiently complement

our core mission have provided a means of engagement for a diverse

spectrum of people and organizations to help us fulfill the Forgotten

Harvest vision of a vibrant and healthy community.

2015 – 2016 FORGOTTEN HARVEST ANNUAL REPORT

Forgotten Harvest FarmsDuring our 2015 harvest season, we harvested

over 900,000 pounds of nutrient–rich foods

such as kale, collards, squash and navy beans to

provide healthy produce often unaffordable or

unavailable to those we serve. In collaboration

with Michigan Department of Agriculture

and Rural Development and Michigan State

University Extension, we implemented a cover

crop sustainability system that protects our land,

enriches the soil, reduces irrigation needs and the

use of chemical herbicides.

Forgotten Harvest Food Branding ProgramForgotten Harvest grocers and retailers who

support our rescue mission have created a

marketing opportunity for food entrepreneurs,

like Scott and Suzi Owens, founders of

Scotty O’Hotty’s Hot Sauces. This program will

enable consumers to support great locally-

manufactured foods and do real good with

every purchase of items bearing the Forgotten

Harvest “Tastes Real Good-Does Real Good”

black and gold label. A portion of each sale

goes to help us feed the hungry.

VolunteersLast year over 15,000 people dedicated 70,000

hours of service to those in need of food in our

community. They gather at the end of each

volunteer session twice a day for a picture and

thanks for job well-done. Our volunteers leave

us with the gratifying reward of knowing their

efforts will reach the tables of those in need

of food the very next day and serves as the

ultimate personification of community working

together. We simply could not exist without the

heart and passion of our volunteers who join us

six days a week at our warehouse in Oak Park

or at Forgotten Harvest Farms.

Orchard of HopeAn apple tree can bear fruit for up to 100 years.

In partnership with Blake’s Farms, we have

planted 500 apple trees on donated land at

Blake’s Big Apple Orchard in Armada, Michigan.

Last year, we harvested over 23,000 pounds of

apples during our first harvest. Our community

is ensured a supply of locally-grown apples for

generations to come thanks to the generosity

and community spirit of the Blake Family. You

can sponsor a tree in tribute to family, friends,

a special life occasion or as a memorial. Learn

more at forgottenharvest.org.

“Nine New Trucks Donated This Year”

Our Road AmbassadorsOur community’s generosity reached an

unprecedented peak this year with the donation

of nine new trucks valued at over $1.2 million.

Over the course of the next ten years, the

expected lifespan of these new trucks, an

estimated 36 million pounds of food that

might otherwise have gone to waste will be

rescued and distributed utilizing these new

vehicles. We now have 35 trucks on the road.

Forgotten Harvest drivers, “Our Road

Ambassadors,” cover over 400,000 miles

every year and faithfully connect us to our

food donors and neighbors in need of that food

six days a week. This historic fleet donation is

testimony to the confidence that the metro

Detroit community has consistently placed in our

mission and will enable us to turn our attention

and resources to programs, partnerships and

processes that will dramatically enhance our food

rescue model.

“Positioned for the Future”

2015 – 2016 FORGOTTEN HARVEST ANNUAL REPORT

Ninety-five percent of every dollar donated is

spent on program services, a level of efficiency that

has earned Forgotten Harvest a four-star rating

from Charity Navigator for nine consecutive years.

Only 1% of the organizations rated have achieved

that record, indicating that Forgotten Harvest

outperforms most other charities in America.
