RESEARCH

Over the last 30 years I have been involved in participatory action research on grassroots social

justice organizations and social change movements, as a founder and leader in Project South:

Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide since 1986 and, more recently, as a

Coordinating Committee Member and popular educator in ONE DC (2014-2016), a Coordinating

Committee Member of Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (2003 – 2008), and a member of the

National Planning Committee of the United States Social Forum process (2004 – present).

Currently this research includes a collaborative documentation project based on the League of

Revolutionary Blacks Workers, point of production and community workers, organizers,

students, and proletarian intellectuals, in auto and other plants, schools, and communities of

Detroit in the period 1968 to 1971. It includes their political and educational work in that period,

as well as their participation in social movement and revolutionary struggles and organizations,

and sharing of lessons learned for today’s generation of movement actors.

This research is not externally funded, but has resulted in numerous publications and

presentations, as well as my being a co-recipient of the Public Understanding of Sociology Award

from the American Sociological Association and other professional and community awards.
