• Named after Warrant Officer Darren Chant RSM of the 1st Grenadier Guards, who was killed in Afghanistan on November 3rd 2009 aged 40. He lived in Horndean, Hampshire.
• Our task was to design a rehabilitation centre, and we decided on a military establishment due to the ongoing commitments abroad & the presence of military buildings in the area.
• We worked through several concept designs starting with a distinct building although it was not “iconic” in any way.
• We settled on our final design after drawings were produced & well agreed this met the “iconic” criteria.
TASK: Turn this old Car Park into a “Iconic” landmark building which will improve the City’s Infrastructure, create new jobs and give Southampton a specialist military rehabilitation centre.
Within 1st week we had already drawn up potential concept ideas
Our first concept design, attractive but not “iconic” and would suite any office block across England.
Our second design was much more iconic than the first design, although the building was not appropriate for its purpose or structurally viable.
We were now happy with the design of the building although we felt we could still improve the “iconic” look.
This we thought could be achieved with a attractive looking glass roof which would also enable us to make the most of the space we had such as a “green area” on one of the roof spaces
This was the design we settled on. We felt it was “iconic” and also covered the requirements for a military building such as security, privacy, and size.
With the design of the building fixed, our next task was to decide what was to be included within the building. The building is 5 stories high along with a basement.

Operational
Site Issues – Project Management
• Lack of resources to produce required work and supervision
• Insufficient site investigation
• Insufficient planning
• Any event on site causing works to finish later than planned
• Underestimating impact of other works on site to the project as a whole
Site Issues - Environmental
• Hazardous materials
• Discharge of pollutants into water courses or public sewers
• Waste disposal sites cannot be found for project
• Construction noise and vibration exceed limits
Site Issues - General
• Major accident/incident on site• Cause harm to members of
public• Damage to adjacent structures• Delays to the overall
programme• Not using safe method of work• Subcontract prices exceed

• Failure of temporary works• Unauthorised access• Negative cashflow• Project funding reduced• Failure of lifting equipment• Neglect of traffic management
issues• Poor housekeeping on site• Access to site blocked
As our building is a military rehabilitation centre we will not need to market the building in the conventional way. Serving and ex-serving soldiers will be sent here after being referred by a specialist. Our marketing will involve everyone who NEEDS to know about our building being told about it. The public will be told of its existence & the Prince of Wales will open the building live on TV.
