Komodo Dragons

Read the following animal report. Look at its structure and write what each paragraph is about.

The Komodo dragon is one of the most dangerous animals in the world. Have you ever seen a real dragon? Do you know where to find them? Would a Komodo dragon ever try to eat a water buffalo? What makes it so dangerous? To find out the answers to these questions you will need to keep reading.

The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard in the world. They can grow up to three meters long and can weigh up to one hundred and fifty kilograms. It has a powerful jaw with over sixty teeth. The teeth are up to two and a half centimeters long and have serrated edges. It is fierce looking.

The Komodo dragon is found in central Indonesia. The Island of Komodo is famous for having Komodo dragons. The lizard was named after this island. They like to live in hot and dry places. They generally live in the dry open grasslands, but they can also live in trees to hide from other Komodo dragons. Be careful of the Komodo dragons on these dry volcanic islands!

The Komodo dragons are carnivores. They hunt for deer, pigs, wild horses and water buffalo. They will even eat smaller Komodo dragons. They will kill and eat animals ten times their size. It is thought that it has even eaten humans. The Komodo dragon will eat anything and everything that it can overpower.

The Komodo dragon is a great hunter. The Komodo dragon uses camouflage and surprise to capture its prey. It lies and waits for its victims in the tall grasses. It keeps very still so that it is unnoticed. It smells its prey using its tongue, which can smell meat that is up to four kilometers away. When an animal is near, it moves with lightning speed. The Komodo dragon will tackle the legs of bigger animals, or simply bite the animal. The mouth of the Komodo dragon has fifty types of bacteria, so the animal it bites will die from poisoning. You don't want to be bitten by one of these!

I hope that you have learnt some interesting things about these living dragons. As you can see, the picture above shows that they are real. They can only be found in a small part of central Indonesia. Komodo dragons will eat everything and anything, including water buffalo. The bacteria in its mouth makes it extremely dangerous when it bites other animals. Hopefully, you will now respect the magnificent Komodo dragon.

Starting and Ending Your Report

An interesting multi-paragraphed animal report should have at least six paragraphs. It should open with an introductory paragraph and finish with a concluding paragraph.

Naked mole-rats look very strange. They almost have no hair, so you can see their pinkish skin. They are about 10cm long and weigh about 35g. Their eyes are very small, they have large teeth, and their legs are short and thin. They are a weird looking animal indeed.

Their appearance gives them some interesting abilities. Lack of hair means the dirt doesn’t stick to them. They can’t see well, so they rely on their sense of touch. Their long teeth act like chopsticks when eating their food. Their abilities are unique.

An introductory paragraph provides the reader with information that prepares them for the information that will follow. It should have a topic sentence that expresses your overall feeling on the topic. The detail sentences should ask questions to get the reader interested in reading your report. Do you...? Would you...? Have you...? Finally, it should end with a concluding sentence that explains what the reader should do if they want to know the answers to your questions.

A concluding paragraph can answer the questions from the introductory paragraph, or it can express the writer's own opinion. The concluding paragraph should have a sentence that expresses the hope that the reader has learnt something. In our report, the detail sentences should answer the questions from the introductory paragraph. Finally, the concluding sentence should try to get the reader to feel the same way as the writer.

The student who wrote the following animal report forgot to write their introductory and concluding paragraph. Read the report and write these paragraphs for them.

DIRECTIONS

Naked mole-rats live in parts of East Africa. They live underground in the grasslands. They make long burrows. Some burrows can be up to 5km long. It is a very dark life for them.

These animals usually eat one type of food. Their main diet is tubers, similar to potatoes. One tuber can feed them for many months. They find them as they dig their burrows. Sometimes, naked mole-rats will even eat their own poop. Now that is disgusting.
