Principal’s Report - 2015 Santa Clara School Community

The Annual General Community Meeting 26 November 2015

Rev Fr Chris, Parish and school Priest, Mr Alex Munut, School Board Chairperson, Mrs Sonia Thiel, P&F President, Assistant Principals Larry King & Evelyn Temmen, Staff, Parents and Students, 2015 has been a year of great change at Santa Clara school.

Archbishop Costelloe writes that Catholic Education is built on the firm conviction that life without God

can only ever be a life half-lived, and that an education which excludes the question of God, and the

importance of God, can only ever be an incomplete education at best.

The archbishop says that this is foundational, it is the absolute bedrock of a Catholic school. The

commitment to the welfare of each student and each staff member is supported, deepened and given

a solid grounding by this foundation. It is not that these things are not found in other schools – but a

Catholic school, which is genuinely Catholic, will be the ‘whole package’ deal. Parents, principals,

educators, and our admin staff in schools, all strive to provide an opportunity for young people to be

immersed in an educational culture, an educational ethos, an educational environment, which

embraces, and celebrates, and fosters an awareness of the love of God which lies at the heart of a

life lived to the full.

Page 7: NAME OF SCHOOL SANTA CLARA SCHOOL, ST. …web.santaclara.wa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/2015...NAME OF SCHOOL SANTA CLARA SCHOOL, ST. JAMES LOCATION: 91 Coolgardie Street, St

Archbishop Costelloe says, that’s the point of Catholic Education.

Our school exists to educate within a faith setting. We are unashamedly Catholic in all we do. We help each child develop a relationship with God. We place Jesus at the centre of all that we do. We invite his presence whenever we pray or work so that our decisions are based on the Gospel values. It doesn't mean we are perfect or that we don't make mistakes or that we set ourselves up to be better than anyone else. It means that we recognize our limitations and with God's help we are able to be better to do the things that parents, students and our colleagues need us to do. Central to our faith is the celebration of the Eucharist. In the Eucharist we give thanks to God for our being and to look to the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for us to show the way forward in our lives. As always, it was a great way to commence the school year, and followed by terms celebrations, as it makes us aware of the need to be thankful for our gift of life and the sacrifices we need to make during the school year to achieve our goals. Curriculum A curriculum innovation that I introduced in 2015 was the introduction of a three-year-old programme. One of the key drivers of the Catholic Education Office of WA’s mission is to improve learning outcomes and optimise life outcomes for Catholic students. A Catholic three-year-old program endeavours to provide a learning environment that is concerned with the development of the whole child. The three-year-old program at Santa Clara school provides an introduction to schooling for children and their families and sets the foundation for future school learning. I am happy to inform you that our 3 Year Old Program functioned well under the guidance of Teacher, Mrs Madafferi and Teacher Assistant Mrs Carmel Reid. We have currently 14 students enrolled. Opening and Blessing of the new Nature Playground The official Opening and Blessing of our Early Childhood Nature Playground was held on Friday 22 May. Fr Chris officiated the Blessing of the play ground. An Annual School Improvement Plan has been developed for 2016. The Leadership Team and the teaching staff and all other staff work closely with our School Improvement Officer and CEO Curriculum Consultants in order to further improve student outcomes. All teaching staff commenced 2015 by re-examining Santa Clara School’s Optimum Beliefs and Values and revisiting the decisions made at the end of the 2014 school year in regards to data and school improvement. The Optimum Beleifs and Values document was assessed and revised by staff members and preliminary discussions around our curriculum focus took place. Atlerations to the beliefs and values were made to ensure they are current, all staff are familiar and agree with the statements and they concur with our whole school focus and mind-set for improvement and quality outcomes. The 2015 curriculum improvement focus was be based on this action research question:

How can we improve outcomes in grammar and writing through personalized learning in a contemporary setting?

The improvement process commenced with all teaching and education support staff working together to identify what teaching and learning practises were in place in year levels and cluster groups. All teachers PP – Year 6 implemented the Australian Curriculum in their programs and in their teaching and learning planning. The subjects we have implemented are English, Maths, History and Science.

The Quality Catholic Schooling continues at Santa Clara School. We unpacked the indicators of the two domains that we took on this year: Student Engagement, Teaching Practice and Catholic Identity. We as a staff established are ratings for the components and we implemented actions in our every day teaching and learning. As I have mentioned before, the QCS initiative helps us in a whole school planning and improvement for our school, focused on student learning and improved outcomes for all students. We continue to build the professional learning culture at Santa Clara school, in our commitment to providing each student with a truly ‘quality Catholic schooling’. As we move further into the new millennium, it becomes clear that the 21st Century classroom needs are very different from the 20th Century classroom needs. In the 21st Century classroom, teachers are facilitators of student learning and creators of productive classroom environments in which students can develop the skills they will need in the workplace. The focus of the 21st Century classroom is on students experiencing the environment they will enter as 21st Century workers. The collaborative project-based curriculum used in this classroom develops the higher order thinking skills, effective communication skills, and knowledge of technology that students will need in the 21st Century workplace. Staff Positive relationships between key school stakeholders is the vehicle to providing a safe learning environment. Our school staff model effective positive relationships. Their obvious commitment to Santa Clara allows their contributions to be highly valued. Our school staff demonstrates a commitment to the children in their care. Their work ethic and skill to develop rapport with students allows for an authentic community. Our staff is a successful blend of experienced and staff beginning their teaching careers. Too often the media treat educators as fair game and on occasion parents use them when they are looking to blame someone. It’s a simple game plan at Santa Clara: be positive with your teachers and watch them work hard for your children. On this note, we sadly farewell our Assistant Principal, Mrs Evelyn Temmen. She has been appointed as the Assistant Head of Primary School at Trinity College. We thank Mrs Temmen for the 3 years of her dedicated and hard work for all students at our school. We wish her well in her future endeavours. School Board The School Board deserves a special mention. The Board exercises its mandate to provide the Principal with advice and support and the advice and support, which I have enjoyed this year has been considerable and my thanks must go to each and every member. P&F The P&F is one of the many groups within our school who assist to make Santa Clara the special place that is. To the generous parents who accept executive positions, those who accept committee memberships or the many parents, who just turn up to meetings to see how they can offer help to raise funds for the ongoing needs of our school - we thank you. The P&F for 2015 have been the successful group in witness to generosity, selfless dedication of time, promoting our school, selling tickets, cakes, mugs, making tea or coffee, running discos, or whatever is necessary to raise funding for the school. I have written before that the efforts of the P&F Association go to assist every child of Santa Clara school, not just their own children. The executive of the P&F deserve a special mention as their efforts can only be considered outstanding. The expertise you have brought in managing the initiatives of the P&F to raise funding for the needs of ALL children at Santa Clara school has not gone unnoticed, thank you sincerely.

The Staff of Santa Clara School I may be completely biased but the staff of Santa Clara school are the very best you would find anywhere. It is an honour to lead such a team of dedicated and professional people. Every person is interested and committed to the work that they are involved in whether that’s in a classroom, the office, the library, the OSC, or the school grounds and the oval. When I see the extra hours spent in preparing work or marking student assessments or setting up classrooms,, I recognise how hard our teaching assistants and classroom teachers and subject specialists work. Their focus has remained constant throughout the year and their efforts are always to improve the learning for every child in their care. I thank them on your behalf. To my teachers and teacher assistants, I say thank you. You have a demanding, but mysterious and beautiful calling. You undertake the work of inspiring young people and providing the tools they need to master our complex world. But why? Because you believe that education liberates the individual. It explains the society we live in and helps create a better world. Teaching is more than an occupation. It is a way of life. For all you do, I am proud of you. And to our School Social Worker, Ms Hilary Campos, I commend you for the tireless support and pastoral care that you provide to the students, families and staff. Hilary, during my tenure at Santa Clara has given her time and family time to be available for the year 6 camp, each year. Thank you Hilary. To our caretaker & cleaner, Tony and Zach, you are part of the whole, all are important, none more important than the other. Each and everyone of you have been supportive in your roles to produce a happy environment for our students, the very reason why we are here at Santa Clara. To my wonderful Assistant Principals, Larry King and Evelyn Temmen, who execute the best leadership in staffing and pastoral care and share with me the responsibilities of running the school, I say thank you. To our amazing Jaimee Wyss who accepts my every wish as a command, and follows through without complaint on every occasion. To our school secretary, Suzanne Walker, I say thank you for your advice, support and care. I would also like to thank Keren Barry and the staff of the Santa Clara Out of School Care for their dedication and commitment to the children in their care. This service operates from its new premises and is of increasing value to many of our families where they know their children are well cared for and the dedication of the staff towards quality assurance and accreditation is never ending. 2016 will see the continuation of the active Before, After School Vacation Care Communities program run through the centre. Mrs Madafferi will be on maternity leave in 2016 and we wish her well as she enjoys motherhood. 2016 Staff Principal Richard Win Pe APRE/Admin Mim Ellis (acting) AP Admin/APRE Larry King Teachers: Kindergarten Alyssa Adams Pre-primary Lia Partington Year 1 Simone Carcione Year 2 Sue Hawkins Year 3 Larry King Year 4 Mim Ellis

School Board Chairman Report AGM school board chair report 2015 This year we had a new board and a new chairman. We are on a learning curve.

Thank you to those who have stepped up. We also now have a new finance sub committee. The boards function is simply

to assist the school it financial matters. Representing the parents; advising on direction. So where are we headed? In

September this year I had the opportunity to represent the school at a the CEO board chairs conference. This was a time to

learn and network, and was valuable. • Santa Clara has an extra challenge. 2017 brings the extra challenge of the funding

administration model changes which for a single stream school highlights the need to keep class sizes full. (You may have

noticed, class sizes at Santa Clara drop as the year increases as students move other schools.) • The Archbishop also sent

out a challenge as to defining what's important in a Catholic School. The Engagement level of the school with board and

Page 11: NAME OF SCHOOL SANTA CLARA SCHOOL, ST. …web.santaclara.wa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/2015...NAME OF SCHOOL SANTA CLARA SCHOOL, ST. JAMES LOCATION: 91 Coolgardie Street, St

parents was highlighted as a key strategy central to good ethos. Funding challenge New government funding allocation

model for 2017 There are two obvious areas that will be considered to meet the changing funding arrangement : •

maintaining full class sizes • Costs optimisation - maintenance and asset planning. How can we help prepare for this

challenge? What can we do? Maintaining full class sizes One idea the board can explore is the reinvigorating of the feeder

school arrangements which have dropped off over the years. If the parents understood that places are available in the high

schools, then the perceived need to move children in primary school will be decreased. (hopefully this will reflect to

increase the class number in the higher grades) This idea has received early support from parents and high school

principals and can be further explored next year. Costs optimisation -Maintenance and planning. The school board has

formed a sub-committee this year which will allow increased support to budgeting, and developing strategic planning

options. Asset management tools like building reviews and maintenance surveys, can be employed. These recognise

potential maintenance work allowing prioritising and planning by the school to assist in budgeting for these costs. Capital

Expenditure Capex planning for one and 5 years will allow the board to assist in the development of school strategic

planning, resourcing and funding for the future. This is hoped will minimise the effect of the implication of the funding

model change in 2017 and ensure that everyone can see the schools assets are well maintained and improved in line with

the strategic direction. For example, a focus next year will be on development of an oval maintenance plan to control the

weeds and improve the playing surface, increasing the safety to users. This will be considered alongside a potential capex

spend of k$100 to replace the oval surface. Alex Munut AGM school board chairman's report 2015 19/11/15 Increasing

engagement The Archbishop sees the school as an important part of the parish community. We are a community; a

community which protects, loves and allows our children to grow in knowledge and understanding. There are interesting

changes occurring in the world today, challenges we need to meet to allow us to contribute as good Christian citizens. For

the school community, an important part of developing community is engagement. What are we doing to “be the best we

can be”. What do the parents think? How do they feel? How can the board engage with the parents? Ensure the good

messages get out and the good feedback gets back? We are all pushed for time. However some of the ideas we can explore

to allow a better understanding of how parents feel include: “Board talks.” Between board meetings each board member

will ask 3 people opinions about a current (suitable) issue, topics or concept. This is both to inform and to learn how the

parents feel about it, and capture ideas. suggestion box ideas. Sometimes the best ideas are from unexpected sources.

feedback surveys. It is always good to get clear feedback, to know we are on the right track. It is important to allow the

parents the opportunity to contribute, and to know that their say is important. We look forward to the holidays; the new

school year and working together with the nicest bunch of people to ensure out children have the best opportunity we can

provide. Alex Munut AGM school board chairman's report 2015 19/11/15

P&F Report

Welcome to all staff and parents to the 2015 Santa Clara AGM. This year the P & F have done an amazing job of fundraising and involving the school community in our various projects . This year we have seen a new initiative of the running of cake stalls by different year groups . Each year group has been allocated a stall date, mostly combining two or three year groups at a time . These year groups provide the baked goodies for the stall and running of the stall .It has proved to be very successful and involves many of the parents participating, especially if they are held on a curriculum assembly. We haven't been all about revenue raising to give back to the school community the P&F have provided several free events . These include the Welcome Picnic, Mothers Day Breakfast, Fathers Day Breakfast and the St Clare’s Feast Day icy pole for the children and staff , all have been well attended by the school community. This year the P&F have provided funding towards the year six camp, new stools for year 5 in their contemporary classroom , new readers for year one and two ,two IPAD Airs for OSC , and an ongoing project is the enclosure of the upstairs balconies with shutters to provide extra work space for the children ,which we have committed to providing half of the funds . We have also custom made a new backdrop for the annual Christmas Concert. In the coming year the Santa Clara P&F will be planning some new projects, both long and short term and we look forward to the input of new P&F members. Our aim is to enhance our school childrens’ lives as well as our much loved and deserved teachers. I would like to thank our P&F members for all their effort and support throughout the year, none of these wonderful achievements can be done without the help of a dedicated group of parents who go over and above what is asked of them. I will be staying on as President of the P&F for one more year (take note) ,as will our Treasurer Mrs Jodie Matthews-Goobie. but we will say a fond farewell to our Secretary ,Mrs Tanya Spiegl , Tanya has been a member of the P&F for many years and our Treasurer for four years , I especially will miss her awesome note taking so I can read back the minutes to myself and remember what important things I have agreed to . I would also like to thank Mr WinPe and his wonderful staff for your support over the year.
