During the 800 years history of the country, the thai people can never boast the distinction of being the only country in southeast Asia have been colonized. Formerly known as thai to foreigners who first came to this region since the twelfth century, the country name was changed to Thailand with the advert of a democratic govemment in 1939.

Thailand has a prevalence of  Buddhism  that ranks among the highest in the world. The national religion is Theravada Buddhism. According to the last census (2000) 94.6% of the total population are Buddhists of the Theravada tradition. Muslims are the second largest religious group in Thailand at 4.6%.
