PART 1 – Music definition Read and answer the questions (WORKSHOP IN CLASS – WORK IN PAIRS)
The word music comes from the Greek mousiké and techné, which means 'the
art of the muses'; we know that the Muses were the daughters of Zeus whose
work was to inspire human beings. Initially, any association of sounds with
silences could be considered music. The term was modified to refer only to the
melodic. Music is as old as humanity, because it is inherent to the human voice
and to the capacity to create rhythms, either with objects or with one's own
body.
To imitate nature, the primitive human being used simple elements such as
bones, shells, stones, etc., to create affinity with the song of birds, the sound of
wind or rain.
Music in primitive cultures generally has an association with the sacred as it
forms part of rital actions.
Each culture developed a type of music, i.e. certain melodies and instruments
that were useful for performing them. For this reason, there are archaeological
vestiges of the first musical instruments in every region of the world. Some can
still be played; others are simply exhibited in museums because it is not known
in detail how the sound is extracted from them. The musical writing allowed that
once the melody was written, it could be performed from the same form in any
place, because essentially it was a language of its own. This is the origin of cult-
classical and academic music.

PART 3 – INCIDENTAL MUSIC It is the music that accompanies a TV program, radio, movie, advertisement, video game,
etc. It is more often called cinematographic music or Soundtrack It is often called
"background music" and creates an atmosphere for the action of the moment.
Why is incidental music important? 1. MUSIC HELPS US IDENTIFY THE PROGRAM
The music theme of some programs is sometimes so well known that only by listening to
it can you say what program it is, even if you are in another room and only listen to the
music
2. MUSIC TRANSPORTS US TO THE PROGRAM ITSELF FOR ITS MUSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Without incidental music it would be boring and many programs would not have had the
success they have achieved
